Yes, I had similar thoughts, but it looks like it's been seriously chopped/channelled at the front so there probably isn't room for a tall Mini engine/box. Has anyone tried the modifications listed in the bl st manual? I mean adding twin hs4 SU carbs, a race distributor (part number C-27H7766), a head with 9.5:1 compression, and a free flow exhaust? ok I have an american market 1971 mg midget. I just ordered a big valve no lead head from an a+ engine as a replacement/upgrade for my tired old lead head. I'm so proud of myself...I'm sitting here patting myself on the head because I can't reach my back. After nearly a year of my poor little car sitting on jack stands with the front end in the air, I finished the assembly of the front end with poly bushings, new lever shocks and springs. I had to replace one "A" arm due to wear from the folcrum pin...if you don't do any other maintenance on your car, make sure you lube the front end regularly!!! No, Russ, yopu do not have to get into the trans to deal with the clutch slave cylinder - it's mounted on the outside of the bellhousing just behind the engine. Unless you are really, really skinny, you will need to jack the left side up to gain access. If you have a 1500 (and if you do, I feel sorry for you ;)) the slave is secured by a pinch bolt - otherwise, it's held by two bolts. "Jim" 35991... MORE

Yup, Jim, lay on your back and look up at the timing cover - that's where the indicator is. It can be done by one person if you keep the distributor clamp snug and move it in very small increments. You may find that the mark "floats" all over the place (commonly known as "timing scatter" in an engine with some miles on it). Just pick the mid point of the scatter for your timing point. My cousin Donald in Irving is having a problem with his 1997 Ford F150 pick 'em up truck. It's a V-6 and after driving about 15 minutes, his #3 cylinder starts to miss. He's changed plugs, wires, and now was attempting to change the coil. On these trucks the coil and dist. cap are made in one unit apparently? Yea, like he said... For those who have held one, you know the "A" series flywheel is about, oh, half a ton...alright, maybe not that heavy, but very heavy. It has seen little use since the mid '90's for a number of reasons but it is currently in the "state" of being rebuilt (well, it has been in this state for a couple of years now). I'm pretty sure there are lots of used ones that can be brought up to new snuff, except for an oversize bore, with good machine shop work. I did see a NOS EN40B crankshaft on EBay today, though. Could look for a Maestro 1275 engine, yep I know its FWD and transverse.. but its not like a mini engine.. the gearbox is bolted to the end so its probably the very similar to a midget 1275 once you get past the single SU Stewart "Ford Prefect" 35827... MORE
Hi Vigil, The only 1275's with a potential problem with it in racing trim are the very first ones with the thin flange block. However, they're still pretty good but also pretty scarce! All the others that came in Spridgets are essentially the same. All the rear drive car engines are different than the mini ones. I might know of a 1275 engine in the San Diego area and can check that out tomorrow. Let me know if you're interested and I'll call him in the morning.
