I just bought a 76' midget that has everything but an engine. It has the tranny. And I need to put an engine in it. I would like to go back to stock, but I can't find a decent engine for what I can afford. I was wondering what other enginges are a reletively easy swap into this car. A old friend of mine put a Mazda Rx7 into his, and it was awesome. Any ideas? "livelarg" 25064... MORE
Hi All I have the same problem only It is just on the front left side. I changed the flex hose too. I didnt how ever change or rebuild the master cylinder.I am wondering if it could be the brake union. Maybe the slideing part is stuck. Is this possible? This is where I was heading next. Thank you Rick "mtman19552002" 25062... MORE
Since you don't say anything about flex lines, I'm gonna say that the culprit, What you describe is usually caused by swelling flexible rubber hoses, It can prevent fluid return to the master cylinder. I thunk silicone fluid in old lines can exacerbat the problem too. It will also swell certain types of rubber, so it may be incompatible with your seals in the MC. Gerard "gerardchateau" 25056... So I am motoring down a nice quiet highway at 50MPH and come to a leisurely stop at a traffic light. 30 seconds go by, light turns green and I motor on up to 50 MPH again. AFter about a mile, I detect the distinct smell of burning brakes. Dang, I hope that's not me.... unfortunately it was. SO I pulled over to the side and came to a stop. The brake pedal was hard and would not depress very far. Furthermore, the brakes were not responding very well (nor grabbing). After stopping I noticed the stinky smoke coming... MORE
Interesting experiments, Paul. The most simple well-working PCV system I ever had came on the '67 engine 5 main bearing engine which I installed in place of the 3 main bearng which came in my PO'd '64 MGB. Factory PCV valve (rubber diaphragm) intake manifold mounted breathing through the liquid/vapor flame arrestor mounted on the front of the timing case cover with matched vented/filtered oil filler cap. Replaced the diaphragm once and filtered cap once in a while. And introducing a little water into the intake manifold once a year will help keep things clean. There are also a... MORE
If you are certain you are getting enough travel out ot the slave cylinder to disengage your clutch, then the first thing that comes to mind is that your clutch disc is stuck to the flywheel. How long has it been since it was driven and working properly? Was the fluid loss the reason for the failure and was it from sitting to long? Three other posibilities: * First motion shaft is stuck in or has to much friction with the pilot bushing. * Clutch pressure plate spring/s have failed. * Throw out bearing has come off the fork.... I am having problems with clutch not disngaging on my 1275 midget. T save cylinder dumped allm of its fluid. I have replaced cylinder and it is wirking correctly however clutch is still not disengaging completely and I am unable to get any gearsw when engine is running. Have changed slave cylinder for smaller bore 1098cc one to get more throw on cluthch lever to no avail. Car is running a five speed sierra box with roller release bearing but this seems o.k. Any suggestions as to why clutch still won't disengage properly before Iresort to removing engine and... MORE
Reshelled? Seems to me if the color on the bulkhead/areas up under the dash is not the original color then what is left of the car but the engine trans and drive train. :-) As Nigel was pointing out it would be very rare if that is not the original color if it matches one of the few original colors the car came from the factory from. A previous owner would have had to strip the car down to the shell, strip all the paint from all surfaces and repaint in order for hidden areas to be other than... MORE
David, Check out his car on my web site. I don't know if you've seen it before, but it's in the Hot Rod Healey section, so your thoughts about stock shocks may not be valid. John's is the last in te series of pages (there are about 8) http://www.gerardsgarage.com/FS_Garage.htm use the "Unique Spridgets" link on the main page to find it. Gerard "gerardchateau" 24983... Drew, This spring I converted to a tube shock suspension and larger front disc brakes. I purchased the full shock kit with mounting components kit from Frontline Spridget. Lots of custom grinding and filing to get it to fit. Worth the effort, but not a bolt on as marketed. The kit included AVO adjustable shocks. (www.avouk.com). No part # was included on the invoice or the one page of lit from AVO. I can't tell from their web site what car they're intended for, since Spridget isn't a choice there. I believe that the eye bores at each end... MORE
are you sure it's the frame it's rubbing? (i.e. is it visible rubbing there, or just audible?) It's not uncommon for a wheel to rub on a flexible brake hose on full lock - check this out, as they can rub through with obvious potential disastrous results! They shouldn't contact anything solid though - there is a lock-stop built into the king-pin which the stub axle contacts before anything else, unless you have ultra wide wheels! The other thing to note, once you've sorted the rubbing thing, is that if it turns more in one direction, both tie rods... MORE
Can those of you who are running front tube shocks let me know which ones (manufacturer and part#) you're running? I'm looking for a set for my 62 Sprite (I already have the conversion hardware) and I'd like to get a feel for what other people are running. Anyone running the Carreras shocks from Winners Circle? KYBs? I'm also running the 400 lb competition springs with an alternate engine. My engine, spring and tire combo sets my front frame height at approx 6 inches off the ground and the distance between the shock mounts at 12 inches. I measured... MORE
Bob, you're Obsessed with your LBC? I am faced with having to replace or repair the ignition switch on my '78 Midget. I intend to pull the assembly off the steering column and either bring it to a locksmith to replace the cylinder, or have Moss send me a new assembly for $159 (yuck). In any event, Haynes (p226) says that step 1 is removing the steering column entirely. Is this really necessary? I see that with the everything else in place, to remove just the cowling, it would have to be bent into a shape that it may not want to go into. Has... MORE
I go out to put my 78 Midget away for the night, and - the key won't turn! What the heck!! I find that the cylinder is a bit sticky, in that sometimes it stays in the "in" position even with the key out. I gave it a shot of silicone spray, no help. Basically I can't get the key to turn at all. This is out of the blue. I checked; the key is not being stopped from turning by the steering wheel being turned in one direction or another. My Midget has no "key unlock" button for... MORE
...might be on subject...but not 'specific' to the conversation.... I've been studying (extensively) the various emissions re-breather systems used on the various years and models of LBC's. Why? Trying to come up with a system that won't dump oil all over the back of the intake valves. Any of you that have ever pulled a head off an engine that has had a bit of blow-by due to worn rings, knows what I mean. The vapors (due to crankcase pressure) being discussed here, dump all that oil into the intake and end up burning onto, and crudding up the... MORE
Whereas studs have a plain portion usually in the middle, as opposed to studding which is threaded all the way. Screws have the thread going right up to the head, bolts have a plain portion of the shank under the head. Alan and yes, the Subject is a play on words "alan.east-jones" 24905... MORE
OK, Claire...let's work the problem a bit. You keep talking of a vapor/oil seperator. Where exactly is this part located on your engine, if not on the timing chain cover. I ask specifically because the year of the car may not be the year of the engine, Claire. Fr'instance, a late 10cc engine (1098) would have the vapor/oil separtor cannster located on one of the valve lifter side covers under the intake manifold instead of attached to the timing chain cover like the later 1275 engines. Factory stock PCV valve: The "appearance" of the rubber diaphragm can be decieving.... MORE
Help! I am sure I have heard or read of a slick method to do this, but can't seem to find it in the archives. My problem is this, I have the engine and transmission all in, but neglected to put the driveshaft into the back of the transmission till now. Is there a clever way to keep the U-joint from flopping around long enough to get this into the transmission without cutting holes anywhere? The last LBC (a 70 Midget) of these I owned (20 years ago) it seems some previous owner had solved this problem by tearing... MORE
