Hi fellas! I am coming back to you with a possible solution to my oil pressure problem. My problem was that to start with i had a very good oil pressure 60-80lb, but as the engine was warming up it gradualy went down. I think we have found the problem, and we recon it must be the pressure release valve that expands as everything is warming up and sets in a slightly open position. I have bought the ball type valve from Minispares and we planned on fitting it today, the engine is warm and we cant shift the... MORE
Thanks much for the input. I thought about replacing with longer studs as Paul suggests, but getting to the securing nut at the base is a really tight fit with the rockers there. Can't get an open end or box wrench in there to loosen it. I would really like to avoid removing rockers to do this. So I'm thinking more along the lines of what Jim was suggesting. I may have to cut down the existing stud and retap to accomodate the extender nut. As it is now, with the new cover, the top of he stud is... MORE

G'day Nelson Well I wouldn't go as far as Biff. Standard is 7" and with anything more than .060" oversize (1/16") you run out of rear brake adjustment WELL before the linings wear out. In Oz we can get oversize linings (thicker material on the shoe) that will allow us to go to about .080" oversize drums, but I know in some countries o/s linings are not available. Now you may think that the rear brakes don't do much anyway, so this isn't really a problem. But consider this. The front discs will only work when there is pressure... MORE
G'day back to you, Colin, I hadn't measured the drums when I posted the question. Today I got out the calipers and found that both drums are within ten thou of seven inches and with the light scoring they will only need a touch up. So I think I will keep the drums after they are skimmed but I will have to replace both of the wheel cylinders. This is going to be a newer old car than I anticipated. I guess I'm just learning what everyone else does in restoring these vehicles. Thanks for your interest, Nelson "Nelson... MORE
Nelson, Thanks for the idea. That is a good alternative, but I'm hoping to avoid having to redrill the holes in the cover to accomodate the stud extension, which will have to be a slightly larger diameter. Any other thoughts welcome. Thanks again, Pete "Pete Skalski" 32517... MORE
Could you find or fabricate a coupling for a short extension if you don't care to replace the entire stud? You could then use a cut off piece of bolt to get the length you need. Good luck, Nelson "Nelson Wittstock" 32514... MORE
Hi Pete, Looking at the 1500 parts book, it appears that the valve cover stud does nothing but hold the valve cover. It's not like the rocker arm studs. So why don't you go out and buy a longer stud to do the job. When I need a longer bolt, I go get one!!! Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 32518... MORE
Fellow spridgeteers, I recently purchased a new chrome valve cover and gasket for my 1500, but unable to install because the studs are too short. Has anyone any experience with replacing these with longer studs to accomodate the height? I need an extra .5-1". Any or all advice appreciated. Thanks, Pete "Pete Skalski" 32500... MORE
Hi all,1275cc sprite speedo works fine up to 40mph then from there flys round to the 100mph mark and flickers, what do you think the problem is, need a new speedo ? the cable is brand new and the drive in the box seems ok,also the cable seems to have a nice curve on it and is not kinked. regards wes "wesley5060" 32491... Shane, They are supposed to just go on the inlet valve stems. These are the only ones that the pistons are descending on when the valve is open, causing them to suck oil down the guides. On the exhaust valves this, in theory dosn't happen. However on mine it was burning too much oil until I fitted oil seals on the exhaust ones as well. Possibly because of wider tollerance using unleaded fuel valve guides, or maybe because of the cam I was using. Actually I suspect oil was being drawn down the stem and then burning directly in... I have a 1972 Midget with correct motor. I am working through an issue and I want to replace my valve seals. It looks to me from all of the parts catalogs that on the 1275 there was only a valve seal on the intake valves, and not on the exhaust valves... am I correct in this? Guys... Aldon (UK) has about every Series A engine tune ever thought up for these motors...in their computers. Their computers know more or less exactly what advance curve will go with your state of tune. It may not be spot on, but it'll be awfully damn close! Bearing in mind this will be a more or less once in a lifetime expense, you might want to email them and see what they can do for you? "Generic" Aldons ("Reds" or "Yellows") are probably what Moss (and others) are carrying and selling in terms of a "generic" curve fors both... MORE
Well, I tried to look but file did not open. could you e-mail me one? Is it a 1275 with the 69 tranny? stuck in gear, have you tried all the fixes that have been posted? When was the last time it ran o.k.? Bill French HiltonHead frenchww@... 32473... MORE
I've got a 45D4 type dizzy (non-electronic) on my 1275, which Moss sold as a 'performance' item - not sure if the distributor drive is non-standard to mate up with the shaft thing in the 1275 engine, but it definitely fits! (1275 Metros probably had them as well, those that didn't use Ducellier) Being non-standard/original, I can see how it wouldn't appeal to you though, Nigel! Regards David "David Jacobs" 32459... MORE
Well, I watched the show, "Car Search", on the Speed Channel, and it was very interesting. FYI, the show is about a group of people who have been given some money to buy a collector car each week and take it to the Barrett Jackson Classic Car Auction to see if they can buy low enough and sell high enough to make some money in the end. Sort of like the UK show where people take 200 pounds and buy flea market stuff and take it to the auction and see if they make money. In this show they... MORE
Hi guys Whilst clearing through some of my 'stuff' to do with the car, I've come across this. It's a NOS Lucas Electronic Ignition Model 45DM Distributor and AB14 Amplifier, which I beleive is a straight swop for the 45D dizzy as used in the 1500's. It's new old stock - never been used and comes with all the bits and fitting instructions. I'm probably going to sling it on ebay, as it's no good to me or my 1275. Anyone know what kind of money this is worth? tia Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 32450... MORE
Well, I thought I had a local buyer for my Sprite, but it seems to not have worked out. I thought I would check the list and see if I can get an opinion on what it might be worth. Itsa: 1969 Sprite(clear Texas title says 1964, but a typo must have occurred way back before I purchased it in New Mexico about 3 or 4 years ago) Number plate (beneath carbs) matches vin on title. You may recall: It's stuck in first gear. Crap!! Stuff I have done: Porsche 914 Seats Roll bar Tonneau cover adapted (lots of... MORE
Thanks for all the suggestions guys. The bearing nut yielded to a pipe wrench with an 18 inch pipe handle extension. So much for the left side. Now its back to the right side and an uncooperative brake drum. One of the retaining screws came out easily but the second one has thus far resisted my efforts. It will be given more time in its Aerokroil bath before I get out the drill. Nelson - having frustrating fun "witstock7" 32448... MORE
Close but no cigar - the MkI/II Spridgets with 1098 engines had electric rev counters, though again, this is only a clue, not a definitive identifier of a car's age - this is just the sort of thing that gets swapped around when the tacho drive gearbox fails! In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a... MORE
My 79 just started this weird thing: when starting up, the red light comes on and stays on for approx. one minute. Revving the engine slightly makes it glow brighter. The altenator belt is adjusted properly, the connections all seem clean and tight, and it's a six month old Diehard, so I don't think it's the battery. Any of you good folks have any ideas? Is this harmful? It runs perfectly, lights, heater, wipers, all function normally, but it's never done this before... Thanks, George "chuibuddy" 32420... MORE
