Hi All, I just wanted to rant about the shoddy condition of the Midget that i am restoring at the moment. This is my first Midget i have ever owned and have always wanted to have an MG. So I purchased one about two months ago which was mechanically sound ( apart from the clutch) but is a bit shoddy bodywork wise. I ordered the replacement sills (inner & Outer) and started work today removing bits for the job. So where does the frustration come in to it you ask. A weekend spent taking a car apart is 'fun'... Paul, I bought a matched set, 2 doors and boot lock for my '71 Sprite. I then dismantled the ignition lock cylinder and swapped the little tumbler plates around until it matched the new key set. Fiddely, and I think of the 7 little brass plates I ended up having to file 2 to match the key after swapping the other 5 around . You need to be very patient! I then find that in practice I never lock the doors anyway as there really dosn't seem any point - I rarerly have the hood up, and if I... MORE
Difficult, because even as new, the boot was a different key! But it was the same for the doors and ignition. Hmm ...... Difficult, that one. My comments apply to a '66 Midget, of course, it might have been different by the time yours came along. Good luck with that one, you might need it You could always try dismantling the lock and making your own tumblers to fit the key of course, but that is a bit of a specialist job and if you can't do it yourself it would probably be mega expensive. I am hoping someone can help me with a problem I have obtaining a key set for my 1971 Midget. I purchased a lock set consisting of the two doors and boot lock, all with matching FS keys. I am now trying to purchase either just the lock barrel or the complete ignition switch (located in the middle of the dashboard) with the same FS key number as the doors. I have spoken to most of the suppliers such as Moss, Brown & Gammons etc. but none will sell me the ignition barrel with a specific key number. I... MORE

I thought 1.5-2 psi was optimal for the SUs and anything more would be a problem (of course every car has its own quirks). I have my regulator set around 2 psi (WAG). However by my seat of the pants I have a funny feeling that during high speed extended runs it "feels" like it stumbles just a bit. I haven't tried bumping up the pressure just yet. I am thinking fuel starvation due to slightly to pressure being a bit low. When I first installed and set the regulator it was way too low and the rear carb... MORE
FWIW, When I was working on my SU's, I was going to go to the Grose jets, and my supplier, FASPEC, told me to stay with the standard as there were many complaints about the Grose jets and while he sold them, he wouldn't recommend them. Bob, Troutdale, OR "Robert Webb" 32604... MORE
Jim we bought a 2nd hand hardtop for the MGF and it was fitted until last week . It now occupies our daughters bedroom !!! the garage and sheds are for midget and sprite stuff !!!! The midgets hardtop is hidden under some shrubs in the garden !!!! I was amazed at how much noise deadening and extra rearward visibility you get with a hardtop relative to a soft top. Having a cream coloured interior lining makes everything appear lighter and less claustrophobic than the black soft top. The MGF tends to do more miles commuting in winter when... MORE
Ah, I see... the parts search form on the site listed this item for the midget. Actually, I have seen hardtops that people have installed sunroofs in. Trevor "Trevor Jessie" 32541... MORE
Don;t know if this is any use.. but the shell I am rebuilding has original BL sills with the holes already drilled for the letters, and it is in Brightwalton, and in fact till recently was on little Beedon Farm. Currently it is in the process of being flatted down for paint, so if you want to make a template from it we might be able to arrange something! Stewart "Ford Prefect" 32516... MORE

In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a... MORE
The lack of door handles sounds right, but the biggest and most definitive mark of a Mk1 midget is the rear suspension, and its also the main cause of death (to the car!) if it's a mk1 midget it will have quarter elliptic springs not semi ecliptics like later sprites/midgets. I also suspect the MkII MG and MkIII AH had an electric rev counter, which the Mk1/II did not, this is a mechanical device driven off the back of the dynamo from a reduction device. IIRC a 948 A-Series engine number starts with a 9, the 1098 starts with... MORE
1972 chrome bumper Still working on my badge bar. Found I had to bolt the bumper on then fit the badge bar using another bumper fixing nut to hold it on. As regards the repro spot lights and the MGOC fixing brackets I had to make reducing sleeves so the spotlight fixing nuts did not go through the much too large fixing hole. MGOC say the hole in the bracket is OK for an original Lucas Blue Spot spotlight but not fo the repor type. Terry "terry.isherwood" 32394... MORE
Just bolted up my R front suspension-new coil springs, shock, rebuilt kingping, bushings the works. But a question. On the bottom of the kingpin, where it mounts into the pan, I installed the 2 cork washers that came with the kit. Now when I put in grease, it seems to flow out quicker than it did before, on either side of the kingpin. Is this normal? Grease also flows out quicker everywhere on the kingpin where there's a zerk. Is this because there is no hard grease backing things up? Should I be concerned? Plus - those corkwashers seem strange. Would... MORE
Most auto supply stores sell a nifty little metal pan that you can slide under the dif! Works great and is probably the easiest and cheapest fix. Cheers, Bob in San Diego "Robert D. Gardner" 32345... MORE
The rear spring mountings are not quite the same - on the rubber bumper cars there are some spacers between the front mounting plate and the floor, so if these springs are fitted on an earlier Spridget, they will not give quite the same increase in ride height; however, they will fit ok. 5 leaves?.. would that no make them possibly 1500 springs? if so the 1500 was 1.5" higher than any other sprite, and as they are meant to have a lot of extra weight (bumpers and re-inforcement) probably higher still, and you have by replacing the rear panels with fiberglass brought about a noticeable reduction in weight.. Hi Rob could you please pass on any information on fitting fibreglass front , rear and doors as i'am thinking of converting my 1968 mk 4 sprite . Regards Bob Hi Bob My first recomendation is dont! Unless you are a masochist with unlimited time buckets of money and infinite patience don't do it. Now if you are stupid enough to still be reading this the front end is a doodle just take off the wings move the wiper motor (it hangs over the edge of the bulkhead and will foul the bonnet when it is lifted) move the... Rob Batley.... You know....years ago I owned a '67 Sprite and had purchased a Bugeye rear glass clip to "match" the Bugeye bonnet which came on this car when I acquired it. Figured the BE front and rear end with the '67 wind up windows, and fold down top, etc. would be about the perfect Spridget. Before I could get to mounting the rear clip, the car was destroyed in an accident wherin the other guy was at fault, resulting in the aquisition of my current BE. Considering your description of what it took to properly fit the BE... MORE
Terry, disregarding the pre-'69 facelift bigger bumpers, there were 2 or three different spring bars fitted. The first type AHA9455 went up to about July 72 (Chassis no. GAN5 123730) From the illustration in the BL parts book, this would appear to be the old one you took off, as it looks like it has more bends in it than the later CHA42. The third type was only fitted to North american market cars, in conjunction with the big rubber buffer overriders. Did you get anything which indicated the part number with your new one? As for which way... MORE
Some help needed here 1972 chrome bumper midget. Just bought a new backing bar for the front bumper. All holes are in line. The one I have taken off has a couple of curves in it making the two fixing holes to the bodywork 3/4 inch from the centre line of the other holes that bolt the bar to the bumper. Since this fits onto the chrome bumper either way round I can vary the height of the bumper, levle with the bodywork holes using the new bar or up or down 3/4 inch using the old bar depending... MORE
Rob Check out your rear spring shackles. I bet they're pointing towards the front of the car - pos. up to 45 deg forward of vertical. You need to get them flipped so that they're pointing 20 - 30 degrees BACK from vertical ie towards the rear of the car. BTDT! - I used a stout broom handle to lever mine back - followed by three huge paving slabs in the boot / trunk for three months to settle the springs while the rebuild continued.
