Duncan Well if I can take mine out complete with transmission with a trolley jack, bunch of bricks and a length of wood, I'm sure you can get your's out with a proper hoist! Personally I think its best to take it out complete with (gearbox) transmission, saves messing about with trying to get the awkward gearbox bolts undone with it still in position. when you pull just the engine by itself, you have to lift it slightly before you can move it forwards, so that the front pulley clears the cross member (assuming you have an A series engined car, not a 1500 - the cross member is different) However, the top of the gearbox comes up against the heater ducting below the battery tray, so you have to lift a bit and pull a bit repeatedly and gradually work the thing past all the obstructions. Terry Thanks for your input, I have heard of anti-bloom thinners, but I only have 2 more coats to spray so I think I'll muddle along. It's had another two coats of 70/30 thinners/paint mix today, and whilst I'm pleased with how that went on, it's a lot runnier than 50/50 mix and much easier to cause runs! You can get 'anti bloom' thinners. Your local paint supplier should be able to advise you on things like min temp for spraying. Also you need a water separater in the line from the compressor to the gun as compressing the air squeezes out the water. Terry "terry.isherwood" 27534... MORE
When I first had my car a few years ago (!) I noticed that water collected in the bottom of the doors and so I drill a few small holes at the points where water seemed to remain. It may be just coincidence, but I am still using the original door frames and skins, with only surface rust top deal with. (not the easiest inside a door frame, but it can be done!) Roger Yes I have 2kw fan heater in the garage I mostly use for drying the car off after rubbing it down, although I don't like using it because it just stirs dust into the air, which then conveniently lands on my fresh paint! Yes it should look good, specially considering its had a bare metal respray, which seriously added to the amount of work involved! Roger, the prep took forever, seriously its taken me months to get the bodywork to the stage of even being ready for topcoat. People just don't have a clue how much work is... MORE
What are you going to use in the box sections etc to help keep the moth at bay? I have got some Finnegan's that I am considering using although there may be better products on the market now. Roger Well as I don't have the correct breathing equipment for two-pack, yeah it got to be cellulose! And yes, I also remember the person saying about lots of thin coats, but he was doing a motorcycle - somewhat smaller than a car! and I don't intend to spend the rest of my life rubbing down a Midget and spraying it! And you're right, its not the best weather for spraying top coats, and yes I've already had some 'blooming' but I have no choice, I have to get it done, I simply cannot afford to wait until the... It depends on the materials you are using. Cellulose, I presume. Lots of thin coats are preferable to one or two thick ones. A little while ago, one of the other listers described how their father sprayed many coats, and then ended up with a very light coat of well thinned paint. (Alan East-Jones?) I have to say that this matches my experience. I personally would not like to be putting a final coat on at this time of year unless you have some degree of control of the temperature and humididity. If you want to swing by NW Surrey on your way I'd be happy to look at it with you, but realise that this would take you rather a long way out of your way. Chris That 'vision in green' looks far too nice for you, I thought you were looking for one that needed a little work? ;) Seriously though it looks good, nice straight body, nice bright shiny paintwork, sills painted the correct colour black this time, wire wheels look in good condition, useful extras - boot rack and roll over bar and most importantly it looks like it been cared for and looked after. G'day Robert I have sold and/or fitted about 5 sets of MGB wheels to Sprites. Standard MGB is 14 x 5, and chrome ones are about 2/3 the price of Sprite/Midget chrome wheels. With low profile tyres, they have close to the same rolling radius as the original 13" wheel, but they fill out the mudguards much better. And they fit under the standard square wheel arch. No modification at all is required on the rear. On the front, you might need to relieve the brake caliper a little, as the wheel centre is a different shape and on... MORE

Chris, Yes our Rugby team took on the world and beat them all (USA went out quite early in the competition didn't they????? )- flame suit on . Robert, Can't resist contributing to this as I just switched to 5.5 inch wheels meself. My car is a SWA and the wheels fitted are Vega pattern American Racing wheels about 20 yrs. old (don't ask) but in fine shape. I am running pre-rubber bumper front springs and stock rears. I had to take the front wheel well up an inch and grind the rear arch "tuck in" flat to get them to fit with 175 tires. Like you, I read Big Daddy and drew Rat Finks. I can't help just jumping in here. I am also from the Rat Fink generation of hot rodders. We used to solve our wheel problems (read no money for Mags) in the old days by taking the steel wheels to a guy who would cut out the centers and reverse them to get a wider stance and weld them back in. When we wanted wide wheels, he would do the reverse center trick and then cut the rim around on a lathe and add a ring of steel, what ever width we wanted to go. 1 inch, 1.5 inch... MORE
