You are the first person I know to say something positive about the Fiat X1/9. Well, Toy... I would be the second except rust began showing up at the corners of each door after one year....and....it was coming from the inside/out! :( Polished it up and sold the car ASAP. Which, is too bad. I had desmogged it and had great plans for it when the warranty ended. This thing was a dreamboat in terms of handling and a real fun driver. The detachable hardtop was a dream. The seats could have been better made for sure. As I... MORE
Stewart If you're re-fitting the RB's I really see no point (or benefit) of fitting 1275 springs, there's a lot more to the ride height than simply changing the springs. Yes, that's what I mean by 'half wings'. I got away with only fitting the small repair sections to the lower 12 inches of the area behind the rear wheel. I debated at length about whether to fit 'half wings' or the smaller repair sections and decided in the end that the 'inner wings' weren't that bad and as most of the rear wing was in pretty good condition... MORE
The height legislation was to do with the bumpers themselves. The performance/handling is a very good reason to leave them off (it's equivalent to about a 5 bhp increase, considering the improved power to weight ratio!) so a bit of time spent grinding off the front mountings is well worth it, especially since you already have chrome bumper front wings Are your CB wings original BL ones or pattern ones? The arch radius should be the same for both CB and RB cars. As I said earlier, the mountings are slightly different, so you would probably need to lower... MORE

Stewart You need to rebuild the 'inner arches' first, then the 'boot luggage extensions' (the bit between the boot floor and outer wing) then finally the outer wing. You'll find that the 'inner arches' butt up to the 'boot luggage extensions'. Incidentaly, are you fitting 'half' outer wings? If not you'll need to because you'll have to take off 'half' the outer wing to be able to get to the 'inner wings'. Regarding the springs - that depends on whether you're re-fitting the RB's, not much point fitting 1275 springs if you're re-fitting RB bumbers. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 27840... MORE
Peter... My mechanic packs the oil pump with..... grease!! Same grease he uses when lubricating chassis/suspension grease nipples. He will also turn the engine over with a drill via the distributor drive to ensure oil pressure before the actual start. His "way". Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 27839... MORE
the access is a better if you do the inner bits first, but remember to keep trying the new outer panels in place as you fit each bit to make sure it'll all look ok in the end. Regarding fitting 1275 springs, are you taking the rubber bumpers off? (ideal time to do it, if you are doing bodywork in the rear light area anyway) If so, bear in mind the spring mountings were altered slightly for RB cars so just changing the springs will not lower the car all the way to the 1275's ride height. If you... MORE
Trevor- Your "random" thoughts are really good. YOU GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You got me to thinking about the oil filter bracket on the side of the motor. I used new bolts. I pulled the bracket off this morning and the VERY TIP of one bolt showed contact. I knew immediately I had found it. So your thought about "oil" together with the other guys that kept telling me it was a "too big bolt in too small hole" issue solved it. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!! Now the final problem. The bolt that showed the hit was the rearmost bolt. If you remember,... MORE
Hey Everybody I need some help. The guy I bought my Midget from has two AH Sprites and he doesn't know what year they are so Im trying to find out for him. Iv already taken the identification numbers and tried decoding them using the guide on this web site. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/midgetspriteclub/sprite/spriteident.htm I know there Mark IVs but I cant narrow down the year they were made. My Midget has a plate a the door jam that shows the m/y it was made but these darn Sprites have nothing. Is there anywhere in the VIN, engine, or body #s that... MORE
Don- As best as I could, I tried to eliminate the tranny in my testing. I put the car in neutral and could roll it all over the garage. I then left it in neutral and turned the engine by hand via the fan pulley. The crank turned the same amount as when in gear. Am I correct that this rules out internal tranny issues? Is there anything I could have done when bolting the tranny to the engine? For what it is worth, as I roll the car it sure FEELS like the problem is in the engine.... MORE

After all this time do you think something has fallen in there? A 1/4" nut or valve cotter would do the trick. Also possibly you have a sticking or bent valve that is hitting the top of a piston. Take the valve cover off and see if the valves and rockers look allright. Look in the spark plug holes. I can have a head off alot faster than a pan and then you could tell if the engine turns over. Happy trails...Rex Urban "Rex Urban" 27701... MORE
Paul I would think that in the rebuild process to get your valve clearances correct that the engine would have been rotated through the complete 360 degrees. I agree with Rex, easier to pull the head and check for anything that has fallen in, than to pull the pan. Steve Quandt Steve Quandt 27705... MORE

Thanks Alan And thank you Robert B. Houston and Rex Urban for your replies. I will admit. My knowledge of 60s British cars is somewhat limited. I mainly mess with 80s-90s RWD Imports like the MR2, Supra, 240SX, 300ZX, etc.. I dont know why I didnt see that the Silver Sprite was a Frogeye being that the rear end is the only part I like on the Frogeye. I think I need glasses. Anyway... Is it that hard to take the rear panels of a Frogeye and install them on a Spridget? Is it a mater of traditionally replacing... MORE
Hellow Im new to this list. Two weeks ago I purchased a 73 Midget. It needs quit a bit of body work. Iv heard of Sebring Sprite replica conversions and I would like to go that rout. The problem is this Yankee cant seem to find where to get a decent replica kit here in the states. The only place Iv found that supply a kit is British Speedwell Racing http://www.toyshop-resto.com/britspd/sebring.html but I don't at all like how the back of the kit looks. I would prefer a kit resembling more like the silver Sebring Sprite here... http://www.mgcars.org.uk/midgetspriteclub/surrey/spritegallery3.html If... MORE

I got the rules for my 1965 MGB. You need so many points, you get points for original engine, running gear, suspension steering rack etc. A heritage shell counts as an original body if it was the same as the old rusty one, minus the rust that is, on the basis that you are replacing like for like and its a valid spare bit. A problem for MK1 MGBs as you can only get MK2 shells. I am sure these rules are on the MGOC or DLVC web sites terry "terry.isherwood" 27676... MORE
Robert As David pointed out, Heritage Shells are treated differently. I think they treat them as a 'repair panel' rather than 'another car', because they have never been registered as a 'car', and as you're transferring more than 70% of the donor car into the Heritage Shell, it still takes on the registration of the donor car. There are guidelines on what constitutes that 70% and I think it includes engine, gearbox, diff etc. amukdigiphoto@... 27648... MORE

Ah hm, I cannot let you get away with this....... Why do you Yanks drive on the right?? I am told more countries drive on the left than on the right. In the UK, if you re-shell a car with anything other than a Heritage shell (which is classed as a replacement/spare part), strictly speaking, the car should be registered on a Q plate as being of indeterminate age so even if he did actually use a 1968 'chassis', he still wouldn't get a 'G' registration. Let start from some premises shall we. Tax exempt cars are those made before 1st January 1972, and as we all know, Rubber Bumpered cars were not made before 1972. One for Capn Bob Passengers on a small commuter plane are waiting for the flight to leave. They're getting a little impatient, but the airport staff assures them that the pilots will be there soon, and the flight can take off. The entrance opens, and two men dressed in Pilots' uniforms walk up the aisle. Both are wearing dark glasses, one is using a guide dog, and the other is tapping his way up the aisle with a cane. Nervous laughter spreads through the cabin but the men enter the cockpit, the door closes, and the engines start up.... MORE
