As regards flat or gloss, an old friend of mine visited the factory at Abingdon while they were producing rubber bumper cars and he said you could look down the rows of parked cars awaiting dispatch and pick out some that had distinctly more shiny bumpers than others, possibly due to different moulds being used. So it's your choice, but I think glossy looks better. However, the front and rears were actually different material, various sources say the rear is nylon (to resist fuel spills) and the front polycarbonate. This brings me to the point of this email -... MORE

Hi All I have a 79 midget with rubber bumpers. I wish I had an earlyer model metal bummper car but I dont. :( My question is were the bumpers a flat look or a gloss look? My midget is in great shape and next year as I save cash I am going to have it painted. But for now I would like to paint them for this season. So flat or gloss? Hi David and Kay Just found my Lindsay Porter book on Midget and Sprite. The Serial number ( chassis #) will be on a plate on the left side of the engine compartment under the air cleaner. This will show you what year it is. The 61 will have a number between GAN1 101 and GAN1 16183. A number higher than that starting with GAN2 16184 will be a 62/63 and will go up to GAN2 25767. Hope this helps. Hope you picked it up by now. Enjoy Ian "mcalpine" 31742... MORE

On my way back from dropping my kids off at school this morning, I met a guy with a gorgeous 1969 TR6. Turns out his lower back problems are preventing him from fully enjoying the car so he wants to sell it. It's immaculate inside and out AND for those of you who'd ever dreamed of a Sunbeam Tiger or a TR8, it has a professionally installed 350 Chevy engine and auto trans AND a Corvette rear end. The car is a sleeper and looks complete stock until you open the bonnet or start the engine. Anyone interested in... MORE

As I inspected the transmission area on the sprite I noticed an extra hole on each side of the tunnel at about where the shift stick protrudes. Looks like the holes have pop rivet covers, about 6x6 inches, in place. Is this supposed to be or are they likely a PO's access places? cheers, bill b 1969 Sprite (Bilby) /\ /\ o o 0 William Burrell 31630... MORE

I am getting ready to get a 1961 MG Midget from a person I work with. I looked in my Moss book it looks like they started at 1962. He was in some war and had the car shipped home. Will I be able to get parts? He says it runs wonderful and it needs a little paint. He is selling the car to me for $500 Is that an ok price? Is there any info on 1961 Midgets that you could give me? Thanks Dave DAVID & KAY MAROSCHER 31622... MORE

Why stop there, lets go all the way. There were several conversions in the '80s (I think Renault???) where they set up an unlimited rally car where they hopped up the front engine, front wheel drive, then built an identical engine/tranny drive and put it in the rear. Just connected the throttles and the shift linkage and clutches together. They locked the steering in the rear and presto. a 500 or 600 HP rocket ship 4 wheel drive rally car. And if you blew an engine, you could still keep on driving!!!!! So all we have to do is... MORE

A common mod is to replace the locally operated valve (ie one with the hand wheel attached on top) with a remotely operated one which are much more commonly available. The advantage of this is that you can then buy a control cable (either a heater control from say an early mini or a choke control for a Spridget - I've used a rotary control from a B in my car) mount it in a suitable place in the car and you then can control the heat without having to get out and lift the bonnet (hood). Initially I thought it was the gasket, so I changed those. Then, when it still was leaking, I removed it from the fender well and the fluid was leaking out from the where the crank goes into the body. I only drive the beast in the summer. I have never had the heater on (I think the core leaks), so could I just come up with a couple plugs and seal off the hoses, thereby ignoring the valve altogether? "Michael" 31531... MORE

Listers - I posted a message a few weeks back about attempting to get a proper title for my 75 Midget, without much luck... Yahooooiiiieeeee ! The title arrived in the mail a couple of days ago! After 4 calls to the local and state DMV offices, I finally talked to someone who new what was going on and gave me the direct line of the lady who handles such things, sent me the proper papers and local police officer inspected the VIN numbers signed the papers and bingo.... Guess it pays to talk to the proper people. Been... MORE

David There's a picture in my August folder in Nigels-71-Midget photo folder where you can just about see where I removed the floor around the trans tunnel - you can just see the weld round it and the new floor. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 31502... MORE

David Aha ! Well thats the other way round. My first piece of advice to you then is to do the inner and outer sills *before* you put in the new floor. Body rebuilds on monocoque cars need to be done around the door gaps - there's a possiblity you'll lock the car into a new shape by welding in the floor before you've done the inner and outer sills and then find the door won't fit properly, or you have problems getting the door to fit. Do the sills first - get the door gaps right - weld... MORE

Nigel I posted the original question and I seem to have confused a few of the guys who were kind enough to take the time to try to help me out. The floor is rotted away from the outside in, I will be replacing both inner and outer sills however the left and right hand floor panels would not (even if welded together) create a new one piece floor, they are not wide enough. The panels are designed to be welded to the centre section of the floor which is under the centre tunnel and never goes rusty. In... MORE

850 Fiat Spyder!!!! Almost bought one of these sweet, little LIC's back when I was young and joyfully insane! :) What a sweet LIC....an absolute joy to drive in terms of "handling". About as fast (maybe!:) as a 948 Sprite but just as much of a ball to drive!! These neat little machines sounded utterly fantastic with an Abarth exhaust. (Today, a Cherry Bomb glasspack, of course!:) Thing is, the steel (frame) in Fiats of this era was of horrible quality. Here in the states, Fiat was all but banned from doing business due to this major fault in... MORE

when you say 'butting up under the piece left still........' I presume you don't mean butting up as in a butt joint but overlapping. If it overlaps under the transmission tunnel, doesn't the cross member continue there also? Conversely, if you DO mean a butt joint, isn't distortion still going to be a problem? Pedantic types need to know! Regards David "David Jacobs" 31455... MORE

what about at the other edge, the one away from the sill? If you can't get one piece floors, the butt/overlap question will just come up again there! Regards David "David Jacobs" 31448... MORE

David Thats a different situation, it doesn't matter if it butts up under the transmission tunnel - it will still lie flat under the crossmember - the problem was getting it to sit flat under the crossmember whilst butting it up under the piece left still attached to the sill. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 31450... MORE

David You're telling me about butt seam welding? Just after I've finished all the welding on my car? You're certainly right in one respect - you can minimize distortion by tack welding and then seam welding, but I'm telling you - from my experience and on that length of (largely unsupported) steel - you WILL get some distortion - even though you're tack welding to begin with - you can't avoid it. It seems rediculous to me even suggesting butt welding that floor in - for goodness sake do it right - remove that existing piece, forget about butt... MORE

I made the panel behind my console out of 3/4" plywood and 1/8" hardboard, then cut a hole in the center of it to give me room for the wires coming ou t of the back of a cheap pioneer cd/stereo unit from WalMart. It looks fine and was not much work at all. I do not know how it would work for a std ribcase, but it works fine with the shifter location on my datsun 5speed. HTH BTW, I got this idea from a guy on the mgbbs web forums. "Trevor Jessie" 31425... MORE

David I'm assuming you didn't replace the inner and outer sills? If it were me, I would probably cut right back to the inner sill, and not bother to butt or overlap weld the floor to the existing piece, but weld directly to the inner sill. I wouldn't be happy butt welding that length of steel, even though the MIG is supreme for lack of distortion - you will get some on that kind of length - that's also a heck of lot of seam welding to do. Cut it back to the inner sill, and butt the new... MORE
