I have been on this list for a while. I have seen many comments being thrown around from member to member. I think in order to keep members, we should all remember to take everything with a grain of salt and also remind ourselves that thick skin is needed where things of a mechanical nature are concerned. Hey Lists!! Drove my Bugeye around the neighborhood yesterday! First time since I bought the disassembled body & boxes of parts 3 1/2 years ago; first time Bugeye has been on road since 1973 (multiple POs). 1380 with headers & Maniflow exhaust - sounds gooood!. It was GREAT! Oh, sure - leaks oil from rear seal area, brakes need to be bled more, speedo didn't work .... But It Ran! In case you didn't notice - I'm just a little enthused, excited, stoked, ... Well, back to fixing problems. Really looking forward (not) to pulling engine/trans to fix oil... MORE

I could be entirely wrong here and I suggest you ask first, but as it seems that the Midget body is not considered a "car" at this point by your auto insurance carrier, maybe it is considered a "possession" and could be covered by homeowner's or renter's insurance? I am about to get the body for my Midget back from the shop. I asked my insurance agent, State Farm, about coverage and was told that until it was road ready there was no coverage available. I've only owned one later model Midget; the rest have been older Sprites. But, I had the same noise and while the fuel pump was indeed getting noisey with age, I agree with Paul that you should check your exhaust clearances. The frame rail can resonate like a drum when the exhaust is not quite as tight as it should be and the pipes make contact with the car. But you said that it happens as soon as you unlock the ignition ? Wait until the pilot bearing starts going out... that's a noise that will really confound you.... MORE
Okay, ED - Here's the story: Grades 5, 8, etc are American designations which were never used in England. I don't know, and you don't either, what strength bolts and in which applications were used in cars of long ago. Maybe some of them were not very strong, but I can assure you that some were very strong. They were often not marked since their use was controlled by part number, and one would have to refer to the parts drawings and the old British Standards to find out exactly what they were. Hello all, Well, I fired her back up today. Put my hand over the oil filler hole, and let it idle. There was no significant vaccuum and no significant air pressure. The valve cover filled about an inch and a half full of oil, with oil coming up the push rod tubes. I'm sure it would have kept going , but I shut it down. As I mentioned earlier, it sounds fine once it gets warmed up. It isn't missing and has good oil pressure. (although the oil gauge doesn't work (Problem #312 of 1067...get to that one later...)... Fuel Tank In my application or case...the filter screen was attached to the end of the tube pickup and touched the floor of the tank in my application...the tube itself ended short of the tank floor by about 3/4". They only go in from 1 side. I found that a hair dryer to heat the plexaglas so it was very hot and then I used a couple of putty knifes/paint scrapers to carefully slide the top edge in the middle of the frames. I'm in the process of rebuilding my motor(1275+). I had the crank lightened (wedged,-2lbs), balanced and polished during it's stay at the machine shop. The block was cleaned and new main bearing were installed. When I test fit the caps, with 40lbs torque but without the Thrust Washers, the crank turned smoothly with little effort (I used assembly lube). I removed all the caps and then reinstalled them with new Thrust Washers from VB; now the crank needs about thirty pounds (approx) of force to start it rotating. G'day mate. After deliberating for a long time about the need for extra mirrors - and I think there is one - I was told about a beautiful set of mirrors that are made for Harley Davidson motorcycles. They bolt onto the rear windscreen bolt, just as they come out of the packet. I've uploaded some photos into the file called "John's Bugeye" in the photo section of the website. Don No doubt in my mind, you should have cut out the rotten metal and replaced it with new. Wheres the cost? You've got the welder - how much are a couple of sheets of sheet steel? No more than the fibreglass. The metal repairs don't have to be aesthetically pleasing - just solid, you can sort the cosmetics out with filler. I did all the metalwork on my car, with no specialist tools at all apart from perhaps a cheap panel beating set, that cost about 20 bucks and a pair of tin snips. The key I found... MORE
I only have the standard drivers rear view mirror (dashboard mounted) and I'm looking for a suitable looking side mirror that would fix in some way to the end of the windscreen so that I can avoid a hole fixing to a front panel. Hi, Tim.... I was in the same predicament when I picked up my BE. Like you, I hate drilling through the car's panels and creating holes where there were none. On my PO'd '74 Spridget the holes were already there and a blacked out Baby Turbo went beautifully with my two-tone semi-gloss black and metallic medium blue Maaco paint scheme! But like your car, the BE had no side mirror to begin with.
