the 1" slave, (with the 3/4" master it makes for a easy clutch), and I do have the Datsun slave cylinder with the L hydrolic line direction, but I think it is 7/8". I am going to a heavy duty oil/hydrolic line supplier in Portland tomorrow to try to get a "Street 90" for my 1" slave cylinder. If they can't do one in a short enough L, is there a Datsun or ??? that is short enough? What do the racers with a 5 speed (the 5 speed switches sides of the transmission of the slave cylinder) and... MORE

Paul, Yes it will crunch going into 1st and reverse Yes it will be harder getting into gears when stationary The "bite point" on the clutch should be further from the floor so it may still need adjustment, But.... nothing beats driving it for a few hundred miles. It will shake any remaining air bubbles out of the hydraulic fluid. It will bed down any contact surfaces, synchro hubs, clutch and release bearing and it will ease the meshing of gears Drive it! Gets some miles under those tyres!! OK, wait till the snow has gone and then drive... MORE

Agreed...I was just about to say, Guy W. Assuming correct length rods and correct parts... Spridget clutch systems are notorious for this initial behaviour after initial (and more than just initial!) bleeding. I once left the slave cylinder very slightly open overnight and while there was still more than sufficient fluid in the MC in the AM, it still needed bleeding and we still got air out of it. Real PITA! Used it for a week during which time the level in the MC required slight filling periodically and the pedal moved up off the floor and all was... MORE

Thanks for the comments Dave. My own car is a '66 midget Mk2. It came with a red interior, and the cowl was also red. The following all refer to the midget Mk numbers. The Mk1 had body coloured turrets. The Mk2 had carpet coloured turrets. I had a friend with a Tartan red that had a red turret and another with a blue midget with a blue turret (as per the original Mk2 brochure in my possession) On the Mk3 the turrets were red for a time when a red interior was fitted, as another club friend of... Roger I have a 65 and a 66 Sprite (both MKIII Sprites) the 66 had no cowl when I acquired her (she had an aftermarket leather cloth thing instead) I fitted a new cowl and painted it black in line with Horler's bible. I have just checked my 65 ( which is a basket case I am rebuilding) and to my surprise it has a red cowl. I even scratched some paint off (hell it will need a respray anyway) and can find no layer of black between the red and bare metal, so you may well be correct.... MORE

I wonder if someone can help me here. I have raised this issue before, and wish to bring it to the attention of 'The People who Know' For Christmas I was fortunate enough to receive a copy of Terry Horler's 'Original Sprit and Midget' which I have thoroughly enjoyed reading. On page 80 next to the Photo' of the dashboard, he states, with regard to Mk2 Midgets, that "The gear lever cowl was now painted black regardless of body colour." This appears to be contradicted in Clausagers book 'Sprites and Midgets - the complete Story' on page 101, where... MORE

OK, Ed, The reason I used the word assumption was to indicate exactly that. It was an ASSumption, and I am well aware of what that implies. The point is that even allowing for this, and for some likely inaccuracies in the data provided by Mr. Clausanger the estimated production does come out at least in the correct sort of time frame for my car - 3 weeks before first registration - which is a documented date. That's good enough for me as I am not really that bothered where precisely in the time/space continuum the thing first turned... MORE

"....smell is the sense that is the strongest in evoking memories" Must be. As a kid I used to ride my bike down to the local seaplane base after school. We lived inland about 5 miles. The smell of salt water never fails to evoke fond memories of "the guys" and bright yellow Piper Cubs and J-3's on floats, sparkling in the sunshine. God, I loved that place. All gone now... supplanted by condos and office buildings, as is the Starlite Drive-In which used to be across the road from the seaplane base, wherein I spent many a romantic... MORE

When I lived in Joliet near a fun airport a guy with a T-6 used to have fun over my house on Sunday mornings. When he'd roll into a dive and firewall the radial the sound literally raised the hair on the back of my neck and made me look for cover. Wayyyy cool! G'day Alan And thank you Nigel. But this time - YOU'RE WRONG! "I'm sure Colin with all his records can give you a better estimate" Thanks Nigel, but actually I don't think I can help very much. All the 948cc and 1098cc cars brought to or built in Oz, were badged as Sprites. All the 1275cc cars were Midgets. As a consequence, it is VERY rare to see a Mk1 or Mk 11 Midget over here, or a Mk IV Sprite. They have to be private imports. And so, our Registrar has very little info on these cars. The... MORE

Alan It's always very difficult to put prices on cars, specially without the ben =3D=0D efit of seeing them, and owners quite often have very strange ideas on what things =3D=0D are worth, but at the end of the day, naturally, you need to decide what it =3D=0D s worth to you. Simple economics says that availability/supply and demand dictate prices of =3D=0D any product or service and that applys equally to cars. There are plenty of =3D=0D cars about in that condition and I don't see queues at sellers doors for th =3D=0D em, so that suggests the... MORE

Both my certificates came with an exact date (maybe it is different for exported cars) although the 66 Sprite was down as an MKIV (not MK III as it should have been) when I phoned them a corrected certificate arrived in a couple of days. Both my Sprites were listed as having red interior trim when built but both had black when I got them. According to Horler red and black were options for the body colours but I find it hard to believe that coincidentally both cars had owners who decided to go to the trouble and expense... MORE

Ian, As far as I am aware no Sprite or Midget was originally built with either an overdrive unit or for that matter anything other than a 4 speed box. However quite a few people have converted their cars to the Spit**** (we don't like using words like these in polite company!) overdrive box, myself included, or more numerously a five speed box from a suitable Ford or Toyota rwd vehicle. Hi listers. First the question: I see that there are seperate part numbers for the front and rear sump/pan seals (those cork strips). I just got a Payen lower engine gasket kit and both strips looked the same to me. It didn't occur to me that they were supposed to be different so I didn't inspect too close and put them in randomly. Both protruded at least a 1/4" (probably more) at both ends when put in their sump grooves. Should the excess be cut off? If so how much? Or are they just supposed to compress? Now the... MORE

Alan You've decoded it correctly, but having the VIN number alone will not tell you the date it was built, you need a book with a Production Dating chart in it. The body numbers are largely irrelevant, its the VIN number that holds the information. Vehicle # H-AN9U-84968 G was built around August 1969. Vehicle #H-AN9L-66861 was built between January and March 1967. And is a very early MKIV Sprite, the first H-AN9 numbers commenced at Oct 66 with H-AN9 -64735. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 28454... MORE

Hi all, Ok my subject heading does sound a tad dodgy, but it refers to the hard/soft tops. Since i have only recently bought the car, I have noticed that when i go out to start it there is a hell of a lot of condensation present inside the car with the hard top on. I had decided at the weekend to try the soft top mechanism to ensure it worked. So i removed the hard top and replaced ity with the soft top. Now the soft top definately has a tear below one of the side windows, but... MORE

Lessee! Normally a car will fog up on the inside if pretty much air tight and the driver leaves a warmed interior, closes the the car door and leaves it in cold wx for a while. Or, the car is warm inside after use in the above circumstances and the carpets (floors) are wet. Or the car is left overnight on a humid cool night under the stars with the windows pretty much open. Better late than never. I just opened my Charcoal canister and have been able to get to the charcoal. After you screw off the bottom look around the threaded edge on the canister body, at fist it just looks like a threaded edge but on close inspection you will see about four slits located around the edge about 1/16" high by about a 3/8" wide. The edge of the round plastic retaining plate, the one with the three plastic bars has protrusions around its edge that snap into these slits. Use a screwdriver blade to push them in working... Alan I can't give you a source for fibreglass frogeye rear ends, because I simpl =3D=0D y do not know of any company who makes them, although there are probably plenty about. I do know however that Paul Banham makes a 'Frogeye' replica kit, which is =3D=0D based on a mini 'donor' car and that the Frogeye outer fibreglass panels ar =3D=0D e exactly the same dimensions as the original Frogeye. It may be worth contacting them and asking them if they would be willing to sell the Frogey =3D=0D e rear end separately and if so what the... MORE

Hi all- Body and mechanical work just about done. Now for the interior. Have been shopping soft tops. Where should I get it? Anything in particular to avoid? Alan Well, you reply to my original reply, you make no mention of me in your rep =3D=0D ly, and you ask virtually the same question in your reply as I answered in my reply - I will therefore refrain from making any comment on your eyesight. It's not that difficult to replace the rear end of a Spridget with the rear =3D=0D end of a Frogeye if you do it with a one piece fibreglass rear, although as there' =3D=0D s no boot opening - it means having to crawl into the tiny opening from the cock =3D=0D... I believe that what you are looking at is a Bugeye chassis fitted with an original Sebring nose and a Speedwell hard top that was sold in the sixties. If you look close you can see the speedwell bonnet badge installed on the front. The speedwell nose featured a raked back windshield that was moulded into the front cowl. It looked like it was removable from the rear but in reality it wasn't. The racked back windshield allowed the little thing to reach a higher top speed.I have been looking for one of these for years to replicate but... MORE
