I am on the point of summoning up the courage to replace my Mk IV Sprite's tatty old hood with new fabric. A couple of questions for anyone who has already done this: 1. These are strictly for reduced rolling resistance, not necessarily for improved performance, as certain things would increase your 'lap time' through worse handling. Fit narrow (standard 145) tyres and pump them up as hard as the highest recommended pressure; use the lowest viscosity oils in the transmission (consider ATF for the gearbox?); check/adjust the tracking to as close to zero as you can get it, and check all four wheels' alignment; remove any extra un-necessary weight. I usually push my Sprite out of the garage each morning before I set off. The garage has an interconnecting door to the kitchen so I try to minimise the exhaust fumes in there. The point is this. It is quite heavy to push. The brakes are not binding and the tyre pressures are at 24 / 22. It should weigh in at about 1520 Pounds (Sprite,1971) By comparison, my daughter's Peugeot 106 has a kerb weight of 1675 Pounds and rolls very easily, you hardly have to lean on it. Damien, Unless you are planning on replacing the needle roller bearings in the Hardy Spicer joints, I would not attempt too dismantle them as it will be virtually impossible to do so without damaging the bearing caps or grease seals. Clean the UJs in situ, taking care not to de-grease the bearings, and then paint the tubular part of the propshaft only. Guy "Guy Weller" 31950... MORE

Hi all, I have just started on a project to restore a 1976 1500 MG Midget, the car was given to me last weekend and it was already stripped down. The first thing I want to do is to refurbish and re-paint all of the old parts that will be underneath the car, including the rear axle, prop shaft and steering rack. I started on the prop shaft yesterday by clearing all the flaky rust off and getting it ready to treat with Jenolite before using some smooth hammerite on it, as I have not yet received my workshop... Hi 1972 chrome bumper Midget. I suspect that a previous owner has nudged the front and pushed the front bumper back but I have to work out what is disto rted if anything. Can someone please nip out and measure the distance between the top of the front bumper and the curved bit of the grill trim above where the fixing bo lts are. I have 3 cm and 2.5 cm on my car. Jim My bushings came from Moss, and yes they're pretty tricky to fit. I ended up widening out the two areas the ends of the wishbone go into on the frame, putting one bush into each inside of the wishbone arm, fitting the arms to the frame then pushing through the second bushing through the hole in the frame - then the bolts. I did a number of small pieces such as brackets and panels and they turned out great with no bubbles showing up. I used a number of disposable brushes from a local discount store. I was fortunate to have a pleasant weekend, with a variety of list members, as well as looking for some old car parts. Wednesday had me preparing the Impala, and display driver, for the trip to be sold. Thursday, I headed up to north Fort Worth, to meet up with Bruce Lowry, and his friend Shane. I have used POR-15 in my front wheel wells and engine compartment and have mixed feelings on it. It has a great shine to it when finished and I liked that aspect. One problem that I had was that as it cured/dried it formed bunches of tiny bubbles on the surface. When I talked to their tech people they said that the humidity must have been too high and that it is sensitive to humidity. They recommended that I sand all the bubbled surfaces with 440 paper and to put on another coat. This happened last fall and I... MORE

Guys: Yes the stuff sets up as hard as a rock. Anytime I have used it I too sanded/blasted the metal back to bare ao not to take any chances. I think the problems may come from application over rusted metal areas, places you can't get all the rust off first. They do give good directions on it's use. Always wear gloves when painting with it, stays on your skin for weeks. And it does break down when exposed to sunlight, so you Must top coat if using in those conditions. The heater casing on 1500 Midgets was similar to the immediately preceding one (like my '74 RWA car) ie combined heater and blower, which slopes upwards to the blower, unlike the earlier square heater and on mine it's impossible to manoeuvre the battery into place without tipping it forwards - not a good thing to be doing when it's full of acid! North American (and Swedish!) cars actually used a different type of hinge from late '68, which may account for different opening heights at the rear edge - the new one was a cantilever type, so it ought...
