I think you'll find the US also has a finite amount of space (unless they grab other countries' when they run out!) but I know what you mean, as I can almost fully open one Midget door in my garage. Incidentally, when I was house hunting, I found the ideal house for any of us - it was an ordinary semi, with a couple of bedrooms plus a six car garage! Hi Abestea Things are rarely terminal on these little cars, however some things are easier to do than others! If the front crossmember and chassis legs are gone beyond economic repair you can get a replacement front crossmember/chassis leg repair section. Alan Hi and welcome to the list. You've got a couple of problems here, and as I don't know how much you know about Sprites and Midgets I'll try and explain as best I can. Now I may be wrong here, and I'm sure someone will correct me if I am, but =3D=0D the Red Sprite in the Sebring pictures look like its had a front Sebring Bo =3D=0D nnet fitted and a rear fibreglass Coup=E9 fitted. The Silver Sprite in the other p=3D=0D ictures, the one you prefer is in fact a Standard Frogeye Sprite with a Sebring... MORE
Listers I'm looking for a source of stainless pan head upholstery screws. I guess pan head would be the term as the screw I'm looking for is a pan head type sheet metal screw with the "finishing" washer attached to the screw. ( make sense?) I have a snug top hard top for my 76 that I got off a 300.00 parts car. It works well. It only came with the front clips so I had to sacrifice the parts car soft top frame into a mounting bracket for the rear mounts of the top. I like it. There is no porthole window in the rear corners, but it is nice all the same. If my Midgets pic is still on the site, you can see how one looks on the car. Alan, That appears to be a bugeye rear. As far as I know, and others will undobtedly chime in here, the only way to achieve that on your 73 is to convert to a bugeye tub, or use a rear clip from one. The top in those pics look a lot like an original bugeye hard top. These are sometimes available on ebay, or sometimes a lister runs across one. The nose is available in the US. My '65 Riviera blue Midget has an original white removable hardtop which seals out the weather just fine - and it is quiet. I love the hard top and I do use it a lot here in Pennsylvania when the weather isn't so nice. Warning - they aren't light (the original ones at least.) When it's off the car it is very easy to carry around by yourself but you can't reach far enough over the car from any direction to be able to simply lift it on or off by yourself - it isn't a one man job... Nigel, Well I lied! The garage ( I built it when we first moved here) is 9' 4", interior, but has a 22" workbench down one side which reduces the available floor space to 7' 6". That was the maximum width garage I could get between the house and our neighbour's wall, whilst retaining a "back passage" (excuse the phrase!) footpath to get to the back garden. Nigel, When I was doing my shell, I was also constrained within a very cluttered 7'6" wide single garage which also housed bikes, canoes and all the other parafanelia which comes with having 3 kids. (where does all that stuff come from?) I moved the shell around very successfully by bolting two 4" pallet castors (cost 2.50 GBP each) to the front floor mounts for the rear springs, with a third clamped to the underside of the front cross member. Steve Woohoo! Many congrats. I don't think I am ahead of you Steve, I'm just finishing off the final primer coats on the passenger side wing ready for colour - that will be the last 'bit' on the car that needs to be colour coated. I still have both doors, bootlid and bonnet to colour coat as well. I don't know if you have this book or not - 'Restoring Sprites and Midgets - an Enthusiasts Guide' by Grahame Bristow (Brooklands Books) but it really is a very useful book in terms of reassembly. One over looked form of shipping which is quick and perhaps less expensive is Greyhound Bus. They will take large objects (even a bugeye bonnet.) No s pecial packing is required other that to pad sharp corners. I shipped a rol l bar using them. You must take it to the Bus station counter and it must b e picked up at the closest station at it's destination. On my 74 the hard top mounts with the soft top still attached. There are two clamps on the top of the windshield (same the soft top uses) and a bracket on each side of the hard top bolts to a bracket behind the rear seat mounted at the same location as the soft top frame mounting bracket bolts. Just my two pence worth on the hard top thing. I agree with all the above comments. In addition, I like the way they look on a Bugeye, rather cute, and it does keep the rain out of the car when parked much better than a toneua cover or soft top. When chilly, you can drive with the heater on and almost keep warm, better than the soft top and I think it is quieter than my soft top. Mine has a thin foam "headliner" in it that helps with sound. If I can locate a pair that are cosmetically impaired but functional I could use them. So much depends on a properly operating electrical system, particularly in older spridgets. To be fair to the Lucas the Prince of Darkness any 30 - 40 year old electrical system, even the best for the period spridgets were made, fails with age and usually for the same reasons . . . oxidation of contacts and a mixture of oil and dirt. A basic knowledge of electronics is a powerful tool in trouble shooting. I have resisted several "opportunities" to buy a hard top for my Sprite. Why? Because it is "soft" to drive with the soft top up, and even "softer" to co nvert to a top on a semi-permanant basis for the whole winter!! And, Because on the occasions when I am enough of a "wimp" to put the soft top u p, the increased mechanical noise drives me nuts.
