Chris... There ARE disadvantages to "in trunk" mounting, no doubt about it. In both my past and current positions I have been trained to think worst case scenarios first and foremost. And I would not personally install a pump on the "inside" myself, for in event of accident, I personally would rather have it ALL "outside" the car, whether I had a "g" cutoff switch intalled or not. However....under normal circumstances, we are not talking the pressures of fuel injection. Leakage of any sort should be detected very quickly considering only pressboard separates the trunk from the cockpit and... MORE
Yep .. think of it pushing the jet away from the carb body for richer, just the same as the choke does when you pull the cable. I have the same pleasurable job ahead of me now after getting it to start on Saturday (first time in 8 years !) the dizzy was in a state, but soon cleaned up and setting the timing by eye was surprisingly easy ! the #2 carb choke mechanism sticks though, so have that to fix amongst other things. Yep...kits for these were around back when these cars first came upon the scene, David. A fellow lister sent me a photo of a page out of either Car & Driver or Road & Track from the early 60's. The "kit" ran about US$60 back in the days when a fibreglass bonnet ran about US$150. Of course, back then a FULL Judson kit for the Sprite ran less than US$200.00!! :):) Cap'n. Good place for it, Dave. I wish the BE's had come with a small trunk lid a la MGA's. Damn pain some- times not being able to get conveniently in and outta there. :( Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 33386... MORE
Subject: Re: ? on Master Cyl piston The black coating is indeed black oxide. It is not any form of paint. We call it Chemical blacking. (or kemmy blacking - in conversation) Can be done as a Hot or Cold process. - hot is better for durability. First done on gun barrels I believe. You can buy the cold process as a kit. It only protects against surface rust when oiled, but it does help prevent deep rusting. it does provide a harder durable surface. It is also used to make steel items look pretty !! Try not to... Jens...suggestion? Go out and purchase a simple Facet solid state electric fuel pump with it's own "incoming" filter. You want the low pressure one, around 3-4psi. Cut out a piece of rubber gasket to place between the pump/body and install it where the stock SU pump went (according to your Haynes manual or whatever you are using) in later cars. This pump will work with SU's just fine without a pressure regulator. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 33377... MORE
Hi guys I need to reseal the quarterlight glass into it's frame. Does anyone know where to get the correct glazing rubber for this? Is it just rubber or is felt used as well? tia Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 33349... MORE
Rick, You might want to look at the modified healey registry web site at http://ntahc.org/modifiedhealeys/. Although it is mostly big healeys, there are some Sprites there (that have the same frame structure as yours), a couple with V8s even. H "hamondale" 33333... MORE
David - No, the engine isn't in the correct/final placement just yet, just got excited and had to show somebody. I was thinking I was going to have to cut a radiused notch in top of the crossmember, but playing around last night I have it a little closer to finalized, I raised the motor about 1" and brought it forward (about 5-1/2") so the pulley is about 1/2" back from the steering rack. I plan to modify the oil pan to a flattened roadracing type, so the pan can be tucked up into the chassis. Hope to do... MORE
My 1275 sump pan comes down about " below the rails. I didn't have a tape measure handy for the distance to the ground, but the brochure (again for a late 1275) gives 5" but doesn't say where it's measured. David "David Jacobs" 33296... MORE
Hi Mike, I suspect that getting it anodized would be more than it's worth. Likely you can use it as is or just buy a rebuilt unit. The Morris m/cyls I do a lot with don't have that anodizing, but seem to have some sort of bright plating that seems to never give up! BTW, brake fluid is a pretty fair paint remover! A bit messy, but works on a lot of paints. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 33302... MORE
I think all the "black" is anodizing or plating to prevent rust/oxidation. That's not paint!!!! Pa "Paul Asgeirsson" 33300... MORE
Guys - I know this was discussed a while back, but what is the stock body height of a Midget? Was looking for the distance from the ground to the bottom of the rockers? or even better would be the distance from the bottom of the framerails to the bottom of the stock oil pan, that is if it sticks below the frame at all? I will probable lower the car slightly from stock but needed someplace to start from, don't want to scrub the pan off. My car is stripped to the tub and I'm trying to figuring... MORE
Some bits are interchangeable - tail lights are the same, mirrors are similar, but Midget ones need an extra angled plinth to sit at the correct angle due to the different curvature of the door panel compared to the 'B. Headlamp bezels again are slightly different, but you can generally make B ones fit. Without knowing the spec of your car (North American? UK?) I wouldn't like to comment on the air filter interchangeability. Wiper switch will probably be a two speed for the B and only a single speed for yours but again could be made to fit.... MORE
Hello Guys, Can someone give me information on Front Panel Assy for 1976, 1500 Midget... there is one up for auction on ebay with Part# 455-155 in the Moss Book, i dont currently have a Moss Book and would like to know if this piece would be what i am looking for to replace the Front Panel on my 76. G'day all Some of you may recall that I own a round wheel arch Austin Sprite - AAN10/87699G. It's a bit rough around the edges, but ius mechanically sound. One day it will get its turn to be prettified. And amongst other things, it will need new grille and boot (trunk to the Yanks) badges. I asked on this site about a year ago if anyone knew where I could buy these - no-one did. It seems that Moss Motors and AH Spares don't even acknowledge them in the catalogues. Since only 1022 Austin Sprites were built, there's not... MORE
Jens I told you it was well worn! The other spindle wasn't nearly as bad, but decided to replace the pair of them while I was doing it. Clean the carbs? Nothing more than elbow grease! I washed them down thoroughly several times with turps (kerosense) using an inch paintbrush and changing the turp's when it got too dirty. I then scraped off the gasket material with a stanley blade and rotary wire brush cleaned the gasket surfaces only. The rotary wire brush is too harsh for the soft metal casting surface of the carb itself and leaves scratches... MORE
Terry Since they improved the A1 Ferry Meadows has become a bit of a bugger to get to unless you know your way around Peterborough, you could at one time just turn off the A1 at Alwalton drive for a couple of miles and there you were. I think the easiest way, although maybe not the most direct would be as follows:- Travelling north on the A1 Take the slip road at junction 16 towards Yaxley, south of Peterborough At the roundabout at the top of the slip road take the third (or maybe fourth) exit marked Yaxley Follow... Hi guys The parts from Burlen arrived this morning and I was able to finish off rebuilding the carbs and mount them onto the manifold and heatshield. For those of you interested I've uploaded a pic of them into Nigels-71Midget folder in the photo's section of the Yahoo group webpage. And yes I know the linkages aren't in position in the picture - they are now! I also uploaded a picture of the wear on the throttle spindle to show just how much wear there was - a lot, but thankfully no wear to the car body. Nigel "amukdigiphoto"... MORE

Jens I spoke to Burlen this morning as I mentioned and they were very helpful. I've ordered up two spindle kits, two rubber washers and two new AN needles from them. For interest and reference for others going down this route in the future the cost of drilling out the spindle holes in the carb body and putting in inserts for the new spindle is about =A320 GBP + VAT. The new spindle kit (comes with butterfly screws and gaskets) was =A36.87 GBP + VAT and the AN needle =A36.33 + VAT. The moral behind this is to avoid... MORE

Jens When I said a mil I actually meant 1mm! not a millionth! That's double what your wear was! It really is badly worn, if I get a moment I'll take a pic of it today and let you see how bad it is. I actually thought initially that the Carb body itself was also worn, but playing about with the spindle in the body it seems that only the spindle itself is worn, so I may get away with just two new spindles with a bit of luck - like you did. I'm going to be speaking to... MORE
Hi The 14W wiper motor was made in single speed and two speed versions. This is the round motor can type located under bonnet. Anyone changed their single speed wiper motor and switch for the two speed versions? I have the two speed wiper switch and a two speed 14W wiper motor. My old single speed motor had all 5 terminals fitted but not all connected. The two speed one has... MORE
