Does anyone have the measurements between the 6 points on the shocks on a 1975 midget. I live in a very small town and the body shops here don't have any type of information on mg's. My midget has more problems than I first thought. I replaced the negative camber bushings in the lower a-arms with a new set of stock ones, checked the distance between the lower a-arms after buying a shop manual from Moss, checked the spindle, and removed and checked the shock mounts to see if they had been played with and still have too much... If its a street car I wouldn't worry too much. You could always run 1/4 inch wheel spacers. My race car rubs like a son of a gun I've finally got it so it is only rubbing fenders instead of springs. The advantage of the smoke screen around corners is offset by the fear of sidewall failure. More BFH work and a Panard bar eventually will solve it. Jay Shaffer 23508... MORE
Ed, When I put the new tire and wheel on the front, I had someone sit in the car and then we depressed the suspension while the steering wheel was turned both directions. It didn't rub. When we put it on the back, we bounced the car up and down and found no problem with the fender wells or outer fender, just that narrow gap between the inside of the tire and the spring. I'm just wondering if the tire will ever flex enough in the sidewall to rub against the rear spring. The wheels are 13 x 5... MORE
Jack, I'm running 185 70s on Cosmic 5.5s with 1/4" spacers on the rear. Have about 1/8" clearance to the springs. On hard cornering, they apparently rub the spring at one of the clamps, because the paint there is very slightly erased and the sidewalls have the slightest scuff mark. A smudge, not an abrasion or cut. I can't hear 'em rub at all, so I'm not worried. I suspect your 1/4 - 1/2" is plenty enough. Anybody got a good reason otherwise, I'd like to know too. Now that my blue 63 has been sold to someone who loves it dearly I bought a purple 73rwa to keep my yellow 74rwa company however the 73 will sport a bugeye bonnet and a color change. Paper work was a bit of a hassle owners and buyers who did not report the sales so the DMV needs a paper trail in order to transfer title to me but think that is all in place now. "I am building a 1275 to the specs of my 1340 Cooper S that I had in the UK. I had the cam ground close to the 731 cam that I had in that motor. It will have a big valve head and cooper s distributor. It is .030 over. I have several leather hides and decided to cover all panels and dash with that. I put floors, lt rocker and A post piller sections back in it plus a new bonnet. (Since buying a bonnet I bought a 68 with an excellent bonnet for $400.) Oh well. All... MORE

Biff, Thanks. I checked everything you mentioned and Wham!, the dimmer switch on the floor had a loose connection. It looked like it was hooked up but when I wiggled the center wire around, the lights came on. I cleaned all three connections and the headlights are on! Thanks a bunch, Jack "austinbud2002" 23412... Driving to work this morning I heard Bob and Tom, my favorite morning DJ's talking about a new sport in Las Vegas. "Hunters" can stalk Bambi, with a paint ball gun for only $10,000.00! "Bambi" is a young lady clad only in running shoes. She get's $1000.00 if she is bagged, and $2500 if she evades the mighty hunter. Hi all, Well I am now back home from my week in Scotland, with over 100 e-mail waiting for me. I drove up in Ava, my Mk 3 Midget, and she behaved beautifully over the 503 miles. Only did about 40 miles while there, as we drove in the CRV each day from our B&B to the cottage we are renovating. We achieved what we set out to do on this visit, i.e. lay a concrete floor in one of the downstairs rooms, have the electrics hooked up properly to the new wiring, and get the windows in where... Cut off outer sill and decided to replace inner sill rather than put plates over the little bits of rust on it. Have heard of jacking point reinforcers can any one describe these and when and how to fit them? If not available commercially I was going to just weld a plate around the jacking tube hole in the inner sill to make it a bit thicker here and spread the load. Hi I think I might be to late put my two pennyworth in. I have just done the very same job on my Mk1 Midget and it is exactly the same.The rear end was fixed to a point behind the trim with a self tapping screw.The frount and had a small bracket that fixed around the trim and bolted to one of the nuts that are attached to the padding on top of the dash.As far as the trim around the door space is concerned this is fixed by little clips with barbs on them that clip on to... Kim , only a thousand dollars for all that work ? , and it certainly looks good quality from the pix on your web page. If you really have to sell, then good luck, but if there's apart of you that says, I'd really like to hang onto that car. Then you will find that all the bits you have taken off the car will fit inside it, stacked up. Put it in the corner of your garage with a dust sheet over it. Kim, Take it from one who can store twice the stuff in a given space than one normally does . . . Put all the bins and bags in it, lay the windshield flat over it and build a work bench surface over it. Otherwise you risk kicking yourself a few years from now for selling it. Thanks to all for the advice and humor. I will not start it indoors on a carpet floor and if in if in a grocery cart will do so on level ground. At this point I think I will just push it under the big oak tree out back and use block and tackle to lower it back in and out as necessary. Welcome Home. I put many enjoyable miles on my Sprite on several trips to Scotland while I was stationed in England. The wife and I celebrated our first anniversary in a hotel overlooking Loch Lomond. Visited a number of the places that you did and enjoyed them all. They just stopped by Placerville on Hwy 50 on their way to Gardnerville Nevada and eventually Wisconsin - or was that Minnesota? This is the cross-country pickup of a 71 Midget from Southern California. They've had a hot-running car, which fits the 100+ weather, but the 14lb cap is holding and, tho it dribbles once stopped, seems to be holding pressure fine. The fancy wide wheels are a bit too wide and the left rear tire has been rubbing, but a service stop in Fairfield on the way across California saw some adjustment for clearance. I wish now I'd... In his PR work for Ford in the seventies JYS used to do performance driving instruction and films. One of the things they did was make people driver a saloon car with a dish about 3' in diamerer mounted horizontally on the bonnet/hood. The dish had a depth of 2-3" and it had a tennis ball in it. The trick was to drive round a circuit or slalom course, keeping the ball in the dish. The point being, smooth is quick. jeremy.cogman@... 23283... MORE
I must apologize to those who followed my progress report, just don't have the time nor the room anymore to work on my 67 Sprite. It is a 67 Sprite that is torn down and middle of restoration. It has a lot of body work done already and shouldn't take much to finish. The shell and doors were professionally sandblasted to bare metal. (cost over $400 for just that). Car is apart but well cataloged, small parts in Ziplock bags with labels, bigger parts in categorized plastic bins, shell on a dolly, new VB parts used cost over $600.... MORE
That reminded me of a funny story my father told me. It seems a fellow had rebuilt a Midget motor and clamped it to some timbers to start it before he installed it in the car. He was doing this in an old house trailer that had a carpet floor (don't ask me why). Every thing was fine until he rev'ed the engine and it tipped over. The flywheel then snagged the carpet and ripped it loose from the floor. The motor ended up wrapped up in the carpet at the door of the trailer. The motor was unharmed... MORE
