Dave Fitted the exhaust manifold but it is hard up against the chassis rail, will show you. I am convinced the engine runs easier and purrs along smoother. I was going to put K&N air filters on, I wanted the one that spans the two carbs as I like the look of it but an owner I met at a show said they just made it noisier and no better so he reverted to the original ones but kept the sports manifold. Rob : My headers (puttin in a V8) are custom made, actually a set of Chevy small block pick-up headers cut up with new Buick flanges, custom collectors with mandrel bent tubes. They are actually turning out better than I expected. My next question is the front valance structure, I basically need to remove everything but the lower front exterior valance sheet metal, does anyone have photos of any Midgets that this has been done to? I'll need to build a new tube structure to hold the new radiator, etc. I don't really want to use hood pins, so... MORE
Rick, FWIW: I own a 75 and one of my early moves was to lose front and rear bumpers (someone actually paid me for them) as I hate the damn things. I had them sawn off at a body shop flush with the front valence(?) and have an earlier grill mounted. My header clears the sides of the engine bay with no problem though it is a little close below where the collector gets taken through 90 dgs. to go under the car. Wha' kine hedda ya got? It will obviously reduce the strength back to what it had been thought adequate for the previous 15 years of Spridget production. I've never done it, but it should be fairly easy to do, if you can get access to drill/grind all the spot welds. The only converted rubber bumper shell I've seen personally was used with A series running gear so it didn't have your clearance issues, and the owner cut his 70-74 type grill to fit round the rails, and hid the ends with a pair of spotlights. Guys - Has anyone out there successfully removed the added frame rails on a later MG Midget, the ones that run from the firewall through the engine compartment, out the grill opening to support the those fugly rubber bumpers? Running out of room for my headers and was wondering what lies underneath them if I removed them entirely, or if it will affect the strength of the body much. Was going to cut them back to put a standard type of grill in it and need to notch a large portion of them out for the headers anyway...... Later... MORE
Anyone know if stainless steel fuel tanks are still available for early Spridgets, mine is a MKIII Sprite 1966. I Know they were available a couple of years back but currently none of the usual suspects here in the UK seem to stick them. I think the Idea of a stainless tank is brilliant since there is mo possibility of corrosion crud building up on the inside and finding its way in to the carbs (ever) and no need to paint the outside. Only one thing .. doesn't the 65 have a tent for a roof? I really would not waste the money on rebuilding the engine if its running fine, far better spending the money on the body, plenty of spare mechaincals about from peple who have done it the wrong way round and found they can't afford to get the body done. 2nd gear syncro is prone to wearing, just learn to drive without it chances are if the box is rebuilt it won't be long before it is shot again!, I suspect most of the other list members have!,... Hello, Well it's a sad day I have to sell my Sprite. Life and school don't seem to agree with my little English car. If you google for 'screen saver generator' or similar, there's plenty of free/shareware programmes available to make your own. This is my first posting here and it is just a quick note to introduce myself. I have at last bowed to constant pressure from the FPO to get rid of the Panther motorcycle combination (as so many men did in the early 60's when the BL Mini arrived) and get a 'sporty' car that she too can enjoy. We live near Bournemouth (south coast UK) and I am about to get my hands on my first Midget in 40 years of driving. Rick, The clearance depends on how low your car is and how stiff it is. The closer to the pan the pipe is, the more important a heat shield would be. Especially where your feet are. In extreme cases, I have heard of doing the math and figuring out the area of a 2 inch pipe, then getting tubing of the same area, like 1 inch by 3 inches (or what ever is the same area) and that gives you an extra inch of ground clearance. Should work fine, just make up a square to round adaptor to attach... MORE
Gentlemen - Currently working on headers/exhaust for my V8 MG Midget (Buick 215), was wonder what type of clearance between the bottom of the floor and the top of the exhaust pipes I should have, and wether to use heat shields or not? Also I notice the big thing these days is to use an x-pipe, is this a big advantage or not worth the extra effort? Also any recommendations on mufflers? Looking for somethin small in diameter (2" exhaust pipes?) & cheap like a glass pack "Thrush", want a deep throaty european sound? Had a MGB in school... MORE

Hello, Couple of questions I have hopefully some one can solve them for me. My Car is Uk 1500cc 1976 Midget First my car does not indicate tothe right when the steering wheel is dead straight. The lights does not come up and the dash board and the clicking noise is far more rapid than it should be. However when I turn the steering wheel a small amount in either direction it works fine. ( And i get strange looks when I have to sway across the road so my car will indicate) The left hand indicator works fine.... MORE
Suprised it's not been posted yet, but it looks like the end for MG Rover, Not entirely convinced its the end of MG, possibly somone like ford will buy the name (the two top current MGs use Ford V8s). The MG badge possibly means enough to make it worth rescuing from the remains of what was once the third largest car maker in the world. Would the american market take to a new MG? I finally replaced my old, rotten seats with leather, but have had a heck of a time mounting the new ones. First, the seats were not marked left or right. I couldn't get the passenger seat to find the holes in the floor, so I moved it to driver side and it seemed to fit better (but not perfectly). I have the slide rails mounted so that the right angles face the middle of the seat and the seat adjustment lever is on the left rail, both sides. Is this correct? Anyone know? I thought this would be easy!... MORE

Gelcoat stress cracks need to be sanded until gone. The best way to do this is to use a thin, contrasting color paint (lacquer types work well) to paint the surface and penetrate into the cracks. Then, using wet/dry 220 grit sandpaper with water, sand the surface until all the color you added is gone. Rinse and repeat...as necessary, if needed. You may find the cracking is localized due to the top design (not stiff enough in some areas compaired to others - story of my life) and you might need to remove more material in the cracked areas... I now have two original hardtops that I'm going to paint. I have a question, both tops have cracks in the gelcoat. I believe from flexing. The fibeglass is perfect, no cracks whatsoever. What I am wondering, is with those gelcoat cracks, what is the best way to get them ready for paint such that the gelcoat cracks won't propagate into the new paint. Do I need to strip it down to the bare fibeglass? What stipper works the best? Any help would be appreciated. One top will be stock to match the car, the other will be checkered... MORE
If it is the 215 ci all alloy Buick V8 then you can get MG badged rocker covers and twin SUs for it!, it is the exact same engine that became the Rover 3.5 litre V8 and powers most range rovers and the MGB GTV8 hence Moss will sell you some rocker covers with MG cast in them that will bolt striaght on the engine. Although 200BHP stock is proabbly Gross rating, not the modern DIN, probbly more like 150 if you want to use the modern ratings. Even the Twin Plemumn SD1 Rover Vitesse only had 220BHP DIN!... MORE
Listers - The enigine/trans is a 1963 all aluminum Buick V8, 215 ci. (I'm told the 4barrel carbed ones are high compression, something like 11 to 1 and are good for a stock 200hp) The trans is a Borg-Warner T-50, aluminum 5 speed, I think it's from a late 70's Chevy V8 Monza. The added frame rails are 2" square steel tube, not sure I needed that much added to the sides of the original frame rails (probably could have used a 1" x 2" on it's side) but boy did it ever stiffen up after they were installed....
