I just installed 175 x 13 on 5.5 inch mags on my 75 and had clearance problems. I had to grind off the inner fender lip on the rear wheel arches and grind a 1 inch taller front wheel cutout. Your car may differ as the stock wheels aren't as wide. Hope this helps. Rob C 75 Midget (back on the road after replacing a bad U joint I installed) robbiesg@... 22999... MORE

If it's a Midget you want the grille for, Moss in the UK want 189 of our Pounds for it! I think good/used is the way to go for this item. David "David Jacobs" 22991... MORE

There hasn't been any mention about Larry Macy's wedding on Sunday! I was there and a good time was had by all. Larry arrived in the passenger's seat of his '79 Midget, in top hat and tails. His driver was best man, Reg Kennedy. Of course, Larry caught his tail (coat tail) in the car door, so he sported a nice greasy spot all day. Larry and Theresa were married in their back yard. The rain held off all morning and until after the wedding, but the mud was amazing. They had a nice big tent and a wonderful... MORE

G'day Guys In Oz, they are called "quarter windows". But in Bugeyeland, they are called "unnecessary". Confusing, I know, since the door windows, winders, external handles, boot lid are all called the same thing. avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 22968... MORE

Ok...I know why the seats didn't fit. Apparently they changed the Midget midyear in '65. The vin number off the left front fender is GAN3L/36873 which means my car was made in the first half of '65. MEANS.....I force fit the wrong seats in my car. What I don't get, is how they could have changed the car that much that a later 65 seat wouldn't fit right. Man.....it's just always something. I'm looking for the front grille and side pieces. Is Moss motors reasonably priced or is there a better source? "Virginia" 22970... MORE

"Aren't quarter-lights" No, Bob....they're not. You're wrong and that's all there is to it! (How's THAT for a rotten attitude!!:) They're called running lights as are the ones under the little red lensi in the back that operate full time when you've got the switch on. ****but***** Or, we know them as side lights even though they're at the front ! Used to be known as parking lights, as it was / is , illegal to park a car on an unlit road without leaving your lights on. Some minis used to have a seperate bulb which went through... MORE

David, in my parts manual (origninal B.M.C.) and in my Factory workshop manual, they are called ventilators. Incidentaly, they are also called ventilators in the original sales literature for the Mk2 Midget. I always called them quaterlights, but according to my other parts books, quaterlights are what they are called at the back of the window on four door cars. R. "Roger Stinson" 22933... MORE

All the mounting points should be there. However cheap replacement inner sills may not have the relevant one Mounting points are the inner sill, as far back as you can get, the transmission tunnel also as far back as you can get and on top of the wheel arch. "Jeremy Cogman" 22877... MORE

"Are wind wings...." "Windows 101" ! :) No, Dave. Quarter lights are "windows" located between side and rear windows on a convertible/roadster soft or hard-top. They can be soft or hard "plastic" or glass. They can be openable and are a permanent part of the part in which they appear, this part not necessarily a permanent part on the car. Like removeable soft or hard tops. "Vent windows" are a permanent part of the structure, normally glass and mounted within their own frame, set in the forward part of the door adjacent to the windshield side posts, forward of... I'm going to have to drill holes in the floor pan. No way around it because I'm putting in bigger seats. Anyway, can I use self-tapping metal screws to mount the runners for the seats? Sure would make things easier. Virginia 65 midget (that's what I drive, not what I am.....Bob :) ) "Virginia" 22836... MORE

Don, Have been following your discussion of mystery mods. This may help. It sounds like your 74 has twin carbs. In 75 they went to the single Zenith and the third rubber hose from the canister hooked up to a compression fitting on the back or firewall side of the carb near the bottom. It may be that the emissions equipment was retrofitted. FWIW Rob C 75 Midget robbiesg@... 22781... MORE

Once again faced with mystery PO modifications. These have to do with the emission controls. First, particularly on California cars, one must find a proper diagram of the system, something the weak of heart should not attempt from a Haynes Manual. The car in question is a 74 Midget I assume with a stock 1275 First discrepancy . . . The manual, if correct, shows a hose from the valve cover to one of three hose connections on top of the evaporation canister, check . . . that is there. Another hose goes to the gas tank vapor collection... MORE

I have to give some background prior to my question. Last Wednesday, I was running around in my stock 65 Sprite. Cornering a bit more spirited than most, the car feels nice and in control, no worries. Next day, I am going through town, thinking to myself how good this car has been running. The thought crosses my mind, I wonder what will go wrong next, so that I hopefully can beat it to the punch. No such luck, within a mile of that thought, my left rear tire blows out. I am 1/4 of a mile from a... MORE

"Thanks Bob & Allen for the education" (You owe me big time, Don May!!:):) Assuming it's a stock 1275 you are looking at Don, the correct model of the 45DCOE for the set-up is 45DCOE13. The DCOE is my favorite performance carb. I got mine initially when the shafts of the stock SU's my PO'd '74 started leaking air and needed rebuilding. I figured what the hell and sprung for the 45DCOE tuned for the stock 1275, instead. Glad I did. Worked just fine right out of the box, with the addition of a "deep" K&N filter. Subsequently, the... Don... Dave Vizard's excellent book goes into the "differences" in good detail. Usually, the Weber sidedraught carbs. are utilized along with other performance upgrades such as cam, inlet valve size increase, flowed heads, etc., though they can be used on the stock mechanically sound motor, the benefit in the latter case mostly confined to more "quick response" rather than a true "power" increase due to scads more aiflow available by larger throats. The operative word in the foregoing is "mechanically sound". The engine in question has got to be developing good vacuum for the Weber is a "fixed venturi"... MORE

Having installed power windows in multiple LBC's I can tell you there is only one type of power mechanism out there that will fit the door. And that IS NOT INSIDE the door. It's a power 'pod' that attaches on the door panel and drives the original crank handle. "ptegler@cablespeed" 22712... MORE

Early gearboxes on these cars have plain rather than needle bearings on first gear. If you want to keep things original then you can either get the box rebuilt for a few hundred $ (or do it yourself). Or with a few very minor and reversable mods you can fit a so called ribcase (for obvious reasons) box from the later Sprites and Midgets up to '74. Essentially the same box but with a stronger casing and better internals. If you are going to keep the power more or less std and only use it a few thousand miles... MORE

In the UK a company called Wood & Pickett do a kit for the Mini (the proper one not the BMW shouting thing) that might be adaptable. Moss in the UK sell it www.mossint.co.uk (I think) as do minispares www.minispares.com. And yes, I do! Good Evening All, You may think I'm crazy, but I was thinking about doing some slight modifications to my 74'Midget. And one of the things I had on my mind is power windows. Is this possible, is there enough room to put the motor in the door? Has anyone done this? I hope to get... MORE

Well there are really good reasons to try and get the car down to the level of a 1275 car, one is the centre of gravity is lower, and thus the car will tend to roll less. The cause of the 1500RB cars bad handling (in relative terms!) is not its extra weight although this is a contributory factor, but its 1.5" extra ride height, this I would like to loose. At the front I can't actually see anything different to even my frogeye, so it must be the springs that are different, even if the lower wishbones are... MORE

The rubber bumpers were required to pass US legislation that required a car suffer no damage in a 5 or 15 MPH impact IIRC, However the ride height was raised because at about the same tine US legislation required the headligh ts to be above a certain height, this being the second time the spridgets h eadlights fell foul of US law makers! As for the wings the front arch is different on a 1500 wing to the earlier car. The 1275 wings I have are original BMC items (not pattern or Heritage) I also have a pair of... MORE

Origainal to the 1275.. it handles a lot better for one thing!, the loss in road holding is not really down to the weight of the bumpers, but more down to the raised ride height forced on the car by american leglation about the heiaght of he headlights IIRC. although they are damned heavy as anyone who has lifted a pair of ruber bumpers will testify! One other reason is that the front wings I have for it are in fact 1275 items, adn these look very odd as not only are they diferent round the indicator mountings but... MORE

Yes the rubber bumpers are going back on, too expensive ATM to fit the chrome ones, nit to mention the sheer amount of angle grinding that would bees to be done at the front just to remove the front bumper mountings!, But the 1275 springs are cheaper than the 1500 items and the rear springs certainly need replacement, when I took them off there was a huge amount of rust between each leaf, in fat the 'straps' that hold them together to the rear of the spring had been split by the rust (although I suppose it could have... Been looking at the 1500 shell, and I now remember why wor stalled on it about 10 years ago! the rear arches are shot, and to add to this the boot floor where it meets the inner arch under teh 'chasis' rail that runs round the inner rear arch has evapoarated , the chrassis section is fine, but the floor part of it is just not there.
