Someone was looking for one of these last week and I said I'd check my spare, but it is an earlier Sprite grill. Robert B. I was going to suggest thinners, but seems I was beaten to it. You could try paint stripper intended for use with fibreglass, as that is more 'gentle' than the normal stuff, but even so, I don't know if it has any chrome compatibility issues. You'd have to check that out yourself. However, it WILL take more applications/longer time to do it. Failing that, you could use something like T Cut or other cutting compound and polish the paint off (also laborious but you'll get a lovely shine!) David "David Jacobs" 37381... MORE
The paint strippers you can buy at most any hardware store will do the job and should not damage chrome. "joe blxfstz" 37382... MORE
I tried lacquer thinner but it barely effects the finish. The remaining paint looks very clean now and there are a number of small areas where it has come off but at the rate the removal is progressing it will take more than an afternoon for each bumper. "Nelson Wittstock" 37380... MORE
Lacquer thinner will remove most alminum paints and won't damage chrome, but be warned - the chrome plating on the back side of the bumper will be very thin, and will rust quickly, and that's probably why the aluminum paint is there in the first place. "joe blxfstz" 37379... MORE
The back side of my Sprite's bumpers have been painted with aluminum paint which I would like to remove. The paint remover which I have on hand (POR Strip)says to not use it on chrome. Is there a good paint stripper that will get rid of the paint and not harm any chrome that it may contact? Nelson 62 Mk 2 slowly progessing "witstock7" 37378... MORE
Thanks, mitch. Your suggestion worked perfectly. Actually I just used a couple wire ties to hold the tranny up, and the engine slipped right back in - no sweat. (Sorry, Ed). I'd also like to put in a plug for a new-to-me parts supplier. When I had the engine sitting on the floor, I realized I should have ordered a new flywheel ring gear. The usual suspects - Moss, VB, MH are all three day's shipping from me, and I was anxious to get it back together, so I called Gordon at The B-Hive (800-652-4483) in Clemson, SC, just... MORE
1965 Austin-Healey Sprite MK3 The car was restored and put on the road in August of 04, it is rust free and solid. I have made many upgrades and changes. Some of the bigger changes are a Datsun 210 5spd transmission, an 1100cc engine. It has a new shiny black paint job with a new sexy red interior. Includes a few spare parts. It has very few miles on it. This is a fun little car. The top could use a little help and so could the Master cylinder. The car is located in Palm Bay, Florida. Please call... MORE
I got the Bugeye back from the the paint & body shop on Monday afternoon (yes they were open on Memorial Day). It had been delayed several days cuz the new manager had fired the painter and hired a new one. They did an excellent job on the body work and paint job, so I feel a little better about the cost. Great paint job - just the wrong color! Definitely not the color & code (brilliant silver metallic, 744) given to them. I actually like the new color - kinda a gunmetal (certain listers should like that) grey... MORE

G'day guys Sprite and Midgets had 7" front drum brakes. But you knew that didn't you. Austin A40 ("A40 Farina" for us Down Under and in the UK) had 8" front drum brakes fitted to an identical stub axle. So yes, it's as complicated as undoing the 4 bolts that hold the brake backing plate to the stub axle, and swapping over the backing plates and everything attached to them. It's a common mod down here as our vintage racers must retain drum brakes - discs not allowed. Also good for the part-time Concourse entrant as few judges notice... MORE
I recently picked up a couple sets of ratty HS2 carbs from a guy. I bought them to replace mine because the float body nipples on my carb body were broken off. So more about my question... I noticed after cleaned these carbs that there is a copper tube that appears to be a vent or something. It's behind the slide and comes out @ a 45 degree angle. Looks to be about 1/4" OD tubing? It's on both carbs.. See attached. My original carbs do not have these vents on them.. Jeremy Loukinas 37306... MORE
Don't think Mk2's ever had side curtans, they were discontinued halfway through frongeye production, and repalced with the sidscreens that came with the BMC hard top. These I belive were unchanged for the Mk2 sprite.. Hope that helps Stewart "Ford Prefect" 37294... MORE

Looking for some if anyone has them! The bits I am looing for are the small plastic square things that sit over the screw on the interior door handles on midgets and sprites with the palstic trim colour handles. Seems I can buy them in any colour I like as long as it's black. and I don't want black. SO if anyone is converting to a blackinterior from tan, or has some on a parts car I would be interetsted. Seems anything other than balck is now a rare interior! Stewart "Ford Prefect" 37287... MORE
I have a 73 midget that is kinda going thru a rolling resto. I am getting ready to pull the motor and go thru it and while I have some downtime I want to work in the engine bay cleaning it up. Doing the engine bay body color is out of the question because I don't know what color the car is going to be changed to. I am looking for some suggestions on what kind of paint to use in the engine bay. I am thinking something that has a Satin Finish to it. If I grind a... MORE

Is the pin/spring adjusted too tight? This can cause the catch to not engage fully and the bonnet can then gradually work it's way off the catch and pop up. David PS I thought it was a hood, not a bonnet for you guys? "David Jacobs" 37239... MORE
Am finally enjoying my car after 6 years of effort and no little frustration... mostly due to my inexperience and limited mental capacity. However there is an annoying problem: I can't keep the Damn bonnet closed. The mechanism seems OK. Is there a trick or procedure known to any out there to line the bloody thing up properly so it will stay closed? I'm about ready to put a blower on the thing and run with an open engine bay. I have had this with my Mk3 midget. It takes time and lot of patience to get it right. The catch in the centre of the hole needs to be adjusted. It also needs to be well greased. If you take off the front grille, it's easier to do it, as when it's closed you can reach up inside. Make sure the movable parts are clear of any grit, and then grease them well. Try re-positioning the sliding catch a few times. You will eventually get it right. But you must make sure the nuts are tightened up well,... MORE
The Organization Of Spridget Handymen in Transit got together yesterday to swap out Larry Macy's engine. Larry got a rebuilt (A wedding present? How thoughtful.) and it was about time to do the deed. Kevin and Rob Valentine, Phil Nase (?), Bill Gilroy and I showed up at Larry's. I understand that Frank Clarici had some problems on the way back from Carlisle so he couldn't make it. I'm sure Frank will fill us in. First we pulled the old engine and tranny, then Kevin and Larry timed the new cam and finished the reassembly. The rest of us... MORE
HI All, I have a question about the competition 1/2 ellipticals for my MKIII Midget. I installed them and the car now sits approx 2.5 inches taller. Anybody have any ideas? Is it the new springs? Will they settle over 4"? Let me know if anybody elese has had any luck with these. Also I am getting ready to list my house and I was wondering what a hardtop for a spridget should list for. I think I am going to sell that ans a pair of brand new HS2's (still in box)and a few other spridget parts laying... MORE
There is a poly-block that goes between intake manifold and carb prior to the heat shield/carb. And I recall there was (asbestos-type) insulation on the shield of my PO'd MGA's. I do not recall this on my later post-60/70 Spridgets or MGB's. Not on my Frog restored by PO, either. Of course, any Home Despot will carry something which can be used along wit h modern adhesives that will do the trick. Or heat reflective paint/coating. Beyond higher engine compartment temps in warmer weather which translate into higher induction air temps and gener ally less peppy performance under these... MORE
