Jim, I have a '59 that was old English White WT.3, with Cherry Red interior. Now Competition Yellow with Black interior. I can send you a piece of the orig. Cherry Red interior that you can match to the Moss seat kits if you wish. The Cherry Red exterior was RD.4 and came with the Cherry Red seats with White piping. The door seals and mats were also Cherry Red according to my " BMC Body Exterior and Main Trim Colour Combinations." Hi I looked in my book by Porter, " 'Frogeye' Sprite - Super Profile" and on page 50 there are two pictures of a cherry red Frog with a red interior. The interior seems to match the paint well. G'day Jim Thanks for the update. Now it becomes clear to me. It must be the fact that we are Down Under and you are Up Over. You ask the purpose of the elephant's trunk. Well of course, it's to breath, or inhale. Well just under the rear end of the Sprite or Midget, (call it trunk or boot as you will) we have a pipe, a round hole anywhere between 1.25" and 2.5". Down Under, it is to breath out of. Clearly, Up Over it is to breath in through - hence the reference "trunk" - to breath... MORE
One of my earlier cars was a 1932 Rolls Royce with Mulliner coachwork At the back was a Boot with a lid that could be opened . Fastened to the outside of the boot was a large fold down luggage rack. On the luggage rack was a- - - TRUNK! So this archetypal British car had a Boot and a Trunk! It also had wings, running boards,quarter lights, dumbells,a bonnet and trafficators. But the hood is still the soft bit that covers the occupants, the bonnet covers the engine, and the boot is where you put the luggage. A "clip" is a common term in auto salvage yards...breakers to the Brits, and wreckin' yards in Texas. A front clip would be the front fenders, hood, (wings, bonnet) and grille bumpers, lights etc, to replace a whole front end damaged in an accident. A rear clip would be the rear fenders, deck lid (wings, boot) and connecting bits with the bumpers and lights to fix a vehicle that had been rear ended. Since my '67 came with a BE steel bonnet on it, the rear fibreglass piece looked like the natural thing to do to me. After removing the external panels, I probably would have gone with adhesives for attachment, along with what was required for "trimming", most especially in consideration of the "longer" cockpit area of the '67, fold-down top, etc. (The car would have looked... MGA's are difficult to "get right" after the rust bug has gotten into their "L" frames (sill, rear door frame member), according to the article I read on rebuilding-restoring same in Classic Sports Cars. I was told that a camping / tent / awning shop could do the work quite easily and for not a great expense.Also a marine chandlers would know somewhere that could do it, however anything boaty is pricy in the UK. I still believe it could be done this way,although it didn't happen for me. My very recent experience is with replacing a split pvc rear screen in an MGF softop by an MG specialist. My theory of why we do it is that it is the challenge of keeping something alive along with the occasional thrill when it does run great, the operative word there is "occasional." In mechanics and restoration there seems to be two schools of thought, those who throw away whole units rather than repair them and those who replace only the worn out parts. Thanks for the pics TJ I agree with Trevor - those lower hinge's look particularly bad, are you planning on sorting those out? Also you can get lower rear wing repair sections for those rotted lower rear wings. And your bonnet (hood) has the typical rot spots for that 'double-skinned' area at the front. Was the transmission tunnel reasonably solid, hence your not touching it? I stripped all that crap off my transmission tunnel and yes it took ages! Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 30203... MORE
Yep... Had one of Jon's rear clips, as my '67 came with a BE bonnet and I was going to do the rear end BE-wise but the car met it's demise pre-maturely. My rear clip finally went to a guy in CA. It was good (heavy) quality. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 30184... MORE
