I was driving to work this morning no problem. A little chilly but that's all. I had to break hard at one point to keep from running the red light. After that, I couldn't put the clutch into first gear any longer and had trouble getting it into second. When I'd slow down to a stop the car would rumble a little. If I took it out of gear it's settle down but I'd really have to work to get it back into second. Would a hard brake make my clutch go out? Could it be something else? When... MORE

Hi Brad, The selector fork fits around a gear cluster and should move that forward. Lever on the cluster not the bronze fork. What happens is that the gear moves axially along splines/ teeth. There are 3 spring loaded plungers fitted radially betwen the two sliding parts. The outer gear cluster moves too far along the inner and these plungers "pop" out, and wont readily go back in to allow the outer cluster to slide back out of gear. They can be shocked back in if you pry on the gear cluster rather than the selector; Or (better) you... MORE
Chris I's probably not worth swapping engines. I would put a Weber DGV on the 1500 and enjoy. If you really want to work on the car you can put a double row timing chain, new thrust washer, a rocker oiler and you can fit 1275 cam bearings to a 1500. A lot less work than swapping engines. and a perfectly respectable engine. And you could recover part of the cost by selling the 1275. I take a lot of crap from the MG orthodoxy, but I race my '76 1500 "Spitget", No major failures yet, knock on wood.... MORE
Chris, Welcome to the MG world. I have a '75 Midget witht the 1500 Triumph drivetrain so I can shed some light on the subject. The 1500 motor is strong and torquey. It gives reasonalbe performance even in the gutless, smog-choked years it was installed. For most uses of the car, the 1500 is great. The 1275 is an MG engine and a pretty good one. It revs higher, snarls instead of rumbling and is very eager to accept upgrades and really become a screamer. For semi-serious and serious performance driving, autocross, road racing or balls out engine building,... MORE
Chris... I have no personal experience with the 1500 motor. Only the prior Series A 1098 and 1275, and damn little with the 1098! However, it is generally accepted by most that the Series A 1275 is a more bulletproof (tougher) engine than it's later Spitfire 1500 factory replacement, as well as being far more "tuneable". However, from everything I've heard from others (on this list) that do own and drive stock 1500 motors, they perform just fine in normal street driving. Only complaint I've heard mechanically (and I've heard this argued) is that as the crank wears and... MORE
Hello group, I would like to top off the shocks on my 67 Austin Healy Sprite and 74 MGB. If my memory serves me correctly Moss Motors sells it but it should be a common staple at the local Auto Parts Store. What is it ? Thanks Just B Crusin crfkingfish@... 25577... MORE
Have a good one, Don May.... No reason why you can do a little work on that lawn mower though....simply taking 40 thou off the head and richening the mixture while adding a glass pack should make for more power! :) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 25566... MORE
I've only owned one later model Midget; the rest have been older Sprites. But, I had the same noise and while the fuel pump was indeed getting noisey with age, I agree with Paul that you should check your exhaust clearances. The frame rail can resonate like a drum when the exhaust is not quite as tight as it should be and the pipes make contact with the car. But you said that it happens as soon as you unlock the ignition ? Wait until the pilot bearing starts going out... that's a noise that will really confound you.... MORE
I looked at the VB catalogue and found that I'm missing the little rubber o-ring/washer, no wonder it leaked! Who assembled these? I'm not saying! I'll have to order a pair. Thanks. Martyn "Martyn Eastwood" 25560... MORE
Hi... please don't laugh as I am a novice to this MG stuff. I have just purchased my first Midget and have a little niggle. When I turn the ignition key to the first position I get a subtle knocking noise - obviously something electrical - maybe fuel pump or starter motor???? As I start the engine and drive this knocking is still there (so obviously a necessary part of the running of the car) but the noise becomes louder and louder on an ad-hoc basis especially after a long run then pulling up at traffic lights). Should I... MORE

Whoa, whoa.... One cannot be too careful out there but even if one is doing everything right, Vern, fate and circumstances beyond one's control CAN rule the day. Not familiar with this particular piece of macadam but am familiar with like roads around Bear Mountain, Aiderondacks, NY upstate CT and ME, NH and VT. Just the place to be on a sunny, reasonably warm day traveling top down in a LBC, for sure. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 25508... MORE
Kevin... You engine looks nothing like the engine in the Haynes manual? Hmmm.... Well...a picture is worth a thousand words, Kev. Those hoses to the carburators from the cannister on the timing chain cover should definitely be clear and open.... no doubt about this. If the valve cover was on the engine when you were running it, then with every respect, Kevin, there is no way you could tell where the oil was coming from... the oil filler hole is too small to provide a decent view and through this small hole, not enough light in there...to dark in... They only go in from 1 side. I found that a hair dryer to heat the plexaglas so it was very hot and then I used a couple of putty knifes/paint scrapers to carefully slide the top edge in the middle of the frames. Here is a "we tight" replacement for when the coloured celluloid used in the metal dashboard arrow-shaped cut outs goes awol. The screw caps from plastic cartons of milk sold in UK supermarkets is just the right degree of translucency to cut to fit as replacements. You can even go for a choice of colours depending on full cream, semi-skimmed, skimmed or fruit juices. Not sure about you lot over t'pond. I know you have different dashboards and other habits. Hope you have been enjoying a good wekend. Guy "Guy Weller" 25435... MORE
I'm in the process of rebuilding my motor(1275+). I had the crank lightened (wedged,-2lbs), balanced and polished during it's stay at the machine shop. The block was cleaned and new main bearing were installed. When I test fit the caps, with 40lbs torque but without the Thrust Washers, the crank turned smoothly with little effort (I used assembly lube). I removed all the caps and then reinstalled them with new Thrust Washers from VB; now the crank needs about thirty pounds (approx) of force to start it rotating. It still moves smoothly but requires some effort. There is no... MORE

Hi, Bill.... Jegs, Summit or Racer Wholesale offer some nice 4 point systems with 3" webbing that really holds you in. These are usually top brands like Simpson. They sell the mounting kits as well. The Spridget is small inside so get "pull up" types rather than "pull downs" when it comes to the seat belts (it they still offer a choice in this respect) whether you order/use the shoulder belts or not. As you already know....VB, Moss or any of the other usual suspects for the stock OEM type stuff. "Performance shops" also carry generic types that will... MORE
Check to see if the hose from the top of the oil separator canister on front of the timing chain cover to the carburetors is clogged up and if the two small inlet pipes where the hoses connect at the carburetors are not clogged up.
