Just bolted up my R front suspension-new coil springs, shock,rebuilt kingping,bushings the works. But a question. On the bottom of the kingpin, where it mounts into the pan, I installed the 2 cork washers that came with the kit. Now when I put in grease, it seems to flow out quicker than it did before, on either side of the kingpin. Is this normal? Grease also flows out quicker everywhere on the kingpin where there's a zerk. Is this because there is no hard grease backing things up? Should I be concerned? Plus - those corkwashers seem strange. Would... MORE

As Gerard said elsewhere, it's for the EGR system for most of the USA and Canada, or in California, there was an additional one for the Catalyst. If the breather system is the source of smoking it is extremely easy to check. Simply disconnect it! A 10 minute test drive will show up the difference if this is the problem. Disconnecting the breather will almost certainly cause the rear crank seal to leak oil during this test. Personally, I doubt if a faulty breather is the cause of smoking. It is much more likely to be a cause of a bottom-end oil leak than a top end smoking problem. Guy "Guy Weller" 32332... MORE
Brad, my rebuilt 1275 smoked blue and I followed all sorts of advice from list members to get it right before I finally fixed it. Of many "cures" attemted, the two that made the most difference in my case were: 1. Replacement of the rocker shaft. Too much oil was leaking out of the rocker bushes. It was apparent by running the engine with the rocker cover off. I left the cork gasket seated on the head and let the engine run at fast tickover. The rear spring mountings are not quite the same - on the rubber bumper cars there are some spacers between the front mounting plate and the floor, so if these springs are fitted on an earlier Spridget, they will not give quite the same increase in ride height; however, they will fit ok. Wow! This is a great list:) Thanks to everyone who wrote with information, help and great advice. I didn't know about Moss, so this will help a lot. My husband is putting new tires on my "baby" as I'm typing this...so he'll be addressing the brake issue while he's in there. I hadn't even thought about cutting down regular U.S. sized wipers...it's a great idea and will work well until I can get the right ones. John, Front springs on 1500 are about an unch longer, so I would assume that the rear sprigs are qrched to ride higher as well. This was part of the US regulation to have the bumpers at a higher level. All the mountings should be the same however. Gerard "gerardchateau" 32316... MORE
The 68 STILL burns oil. From cold, the first 5 miles are just little puffs, then it goes into James Bond mode. Not full time, it comes and goes. I tried our shop mechanics idea to determine if the rings are seated. I have the head off, so I put 1" of oil on top of each piston. The oil has not dropped hardly at all in 1 1/2 hours. I can tell from the head, which chambers were burning oil, and the one that was not, has the most significant amount of seepage, almost 1/8", the others are... MORE
Hello All. I live in Cheshire, Oregon USA and I'm the new owner of a very nice 1979 MG Midget:) I just bought it this past weekend and I can't wait to play with it. It has a couple of problems that need to be addressed before I can really drive it, one of which is a throttle that keeps sticking wide open. The other is bad brakes;) This combination of issues makes me a bit nervous! It desperately needs windshield wipers and I am having difficulty finding the little 9" wipers that are on it now. 5 leaves?.. would that no make them possibly 1500 springs? if so the 1500 was 1.5" higher than any other sprite, and as they are meant to have a lot of extra weight (bumpers and re-inforcement) probably higher still, and you have by replacing the rear panels with fiberglass brought about a noticeable reduction in weight.. Rob Batley.... You know....years ago I owned a '67 Sprite and had purchased a Bugeye rear glass clip to "match" the Bugeye bonnet which came on this car when I acquired it. Figured the BE front and rear end with the '67 wind up windows, and fold down top, etc. would be about the perfect Spridget. Before I could get to mounting the rear clip, the car was destroyed in an accident wherin the other guy was at fault, resulting in the aquisition of my current BE. Terry, disregarding the pre-'69 facelift bigger bumpers, there were 2 or three different spring bars fitted. The first type AHA9455 went up to about July 72 (Chassis no. GAN5 123730) From the illustration in the BL parts book, this would appear to be the old one you took off, as it looks like it has more bends in it than the later CHA42. The third type was only fitted to North american market cars, in conjunction with the big rubber buffer overriders. Did you get anything which indicated the part number with your new one? Some help needed here 1972 chrome bumper midget. Just bought a new backing bar for the front bumper. All holes are in line. The one I have taken off has a couple of curves in it making the two fixing holes to the bodywork 3/4 inch from the centre line of the other holes that bolt the bar to the bumper. Since this fits onto the chrome bumper either way round I can vary the height of the bumper, levle with the bodywork holes using the new bar or up or down 3/4 inch using the old bar depending... MORE

There are some (few?) who think "oil is oil" and this is true...unless you are talking the "additive packages" that brand name mfgrs. add to the basic stock intended specifically for automotive use. Then the "oil is oil" idea goes right out the window! :):) Paul A (and I) use(d) Fram's for many, many moons with no problems so it is quite possible that conscientious scheduled oil (and filter) changes are more "key" in this than alleged quality of filter. This is exactly what I did! I learnt two things in the process.... The stripped tub is surprisingly light. and the matress makes a horrible smell when it starts to smolder from welding or grinder sparks!! Guy "Guy Weller" 32176... MORE

Rick I kept my old single bed and mattress for this job. With the tub fully stripped, it is light enough to man handle upside down. I laid out the bed frame and single mattress on the floor of the garage underneath the car and simply lifted the edge of the car and flipped it over onto the mattress and leant it against the wall. Duncan One of the jobs I hated most on the car (and there were plenty of them) was scraping all the underseal/bitumen off the inner footwells and fronts of the inner footwells. I'm not small (no comments needed on that one thanks Ed) at 6 foot and getting inside those footwells and scraping, scraping, scraping was very uncomfortable! Regarding carpet glue and fluff, I found Cellulose thinners worked really well. Apply it with a brush, leave for a few minutes and it just scrapes off, once you've got the majority off - go over it with an old rag... MORE
