Right on, John... This was Biff Jones idea as well....from the pictures on your site, it's obvious these motorcycle mirrors fit right in with the Sprite's looks and configuation. G'day mate. After deliberating for a long time about the need for extra mirrors - and I think there is one - I was told about a beautiful set of mirrors that are made for Harley Davidson motorcycles. They bolt onto the rear windscreen bolt, just as they come out of the packet. I've uploaded some photos into the file called "John's Bugeye" in the photo section of the website. I did the same thing with the seat backs in my bugeye. The "horns" were eaten back and rough and the lip across the inside was the same way. I couldn't find any replacements localy and the upholsterer was waiting for the seat backs so he could finish the seats and the car show was a week away. A seam came loose in the seat back a couple of months later so I took them back to the upholsterer. He took the material off and repaired the seam. When I picked them up, he told me that he would... The good news is, I have seen a quarterlight mounted mirror, which I think is what you're looking for (see page 86 Terry Horlers excellent book - Original Sprite and Midget). I only have the standard drivers rear view mirror (dashboard mounted) and I'm looking for a suitable looking side mirror that would fix in some way to the end of the windscreen so that I can avoid a hole fixing to a front panel. Hi, Tim.... I was in the same predicament when I picked up my BE. Like you, I hate drilling through the car's panels and creating holes where there were none. On my PO'd '74 Spridget the holes were already there and a blacked out Baby Turbo went beautifully with my two-tone semi-gloss black and metallic medium blue Maaco paint scheme! But like your car, the BE had no side mirror to begin with. Yes depends on how much 'severe' is. As David said, you can rebuild the front end with the bushes of the top trunnion behind (inboard) the kingpin as opposed to in front of it. This gives the sort of negative camber (top of wheel further inboard than bottom) that even the lariest of race cars don't run with. "Jeremy Cogman" 25361... MORE
Those who have checked out my bugeye bonnet restoration photos may have noticed that I chose to form the missing sections of end flange and sheet metal with fiberglass. I realize that many have advised me to cut back and replace with new formed metal pieces . . . that is not within my expertise nor budget, lots of time I have. I might as well buy a new fiberglass bonnet for the cost involved for new metal work and welding so I sought the advice of some folks at TAP Plastics and went with fiberglass. My logic with... MORE
Don I'ts more than likely an idiosyncrasy of the way the bonnet is fabricated/constructed, being made out of separate side wings (fenders) and top panel, the beading was there I guess to help hide the seam joint. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 25351... MORE
Dave You really need to find out what is causing the 'severe inward tilt', before you can contemplate fixing it! There is no means of camber adjustment because there is no need to adjust it - if the car is set up correctly it does not need adjustment. Unless you've been in a frontend shunt, or someone has whacked the car on the side in an accident - why would you need to straighten the frame? If you haven't been in an accident recently or whacked that sides wheel on a kerb or know of a PO that bent... MORE

Why do you suppose that beading was used to cover the bonnet seams of the fender/ wings however between the signal lamps and the grill opening the seam was left not only left exposed but not smoothed over? Hello Fellow Spridgeteers, Long time lurker (never a poster...'till now). My '71 Midget has a severe inward tilt to the right front wheel (negative camber..I think). Since there, apparently, is no means of camber adjustment, what can I do...Frame straightening...gulp. Is this car capable of being straightened by a standard shop? You always cooked the bacon first so you could fry the eggs in it, if you didn't want your eggs sunny side up you simply splashed bacon grease over the top of the yoke. My Mk 2 Sprite has not been driven for over 30 years and as I continue the resurrection process I have a concern about the steering mechanism. I would like to flush out the old oil in the rack housing but am unsure about how to go about it. Is there a simple way to open it up and just run new oil through it to flush it or would I have to disassemble it completely? I have parts on hand to replace the front brakes with discs so it would not be challenging to remove the steering completely... MORE

The brake failure light is on the right hand side of the radio console above the cigarette lighter. (I think it should come on with the handbrake as well.) A single dash light bulb shouldn't cause total failure, as they are wired in parallel, so it's just a case of methodically checking the wiring/connections/switch etc. I think they're fed from an unfused supply. Cap'n, I would just add that having enough accelleration and top end in a bugeye to outrun the majority of vehicles out there still doesn't make freeway driving enjoyable for me. I've been doing 70 in rush hour traffic a few times, and I don't care for it. I feel like I'm trying to drive through a pinball machine. And here in upstate NY, our rush hour is probably less than off hours traffic in CT and CA. Couple of other observations - Considering the age, relative rarity, and appeal of these cars, you have to realize you're driving... MORE

Hi David You were right on ths wiring colours I didnt notice that differnce. The dash lights area Red wire with white trace Whereas the diode is White Wire with red trace out on the male connector and Green with orange trace on the female connector. So now I have two more questions regarding this 1) If it is the brake failure warning light where abouts on the dash would this be displayed as there is no obvious point I can see. I havnt noted this so it may be functioning well after all. 2) What could be causing... MORE
I think it's a diode rather than a fuse, but the only one I can find in diagrams is associated with the brake failure warning light circuit rather than the panel lamps. However it's possible the colour code has been mixed up - some of the wiring to the brake warning circuit diode is white with a red tracer, the panel lamps supply is the reverse, ie red with a white tracer. Hammodale asks..."Sound familiar?" It sure does! That's why I've got halogens and a 3rd brake light mounted high on the rollbar. So THEY can see me better. I still drive it like it's a motocycle though... very defensively...because it is small and can go unseen not only at night...but in broad daylight as well. Not a question of outrunning them at all. Question of "fitting in" with the "flow" (safety). Left to my own devices in light traffic, I'm cruising along comfortably at 3K in 5th...65 or so. Hi Neil I had the same problem with mine but got them working in the end although I am not sure whether the same circumstances may apply. I say this as it was my brake light and indicators that were not working, everything else worked fine. It mentioned in the Haynes Manual that these two are related and when I fixed the one both sprung back to life. What it was down to was a loose and corroded connection between the brake pedal switch at the master cylinder and the wiring loom. I choped these off and repalced the... MORE
Hello there I am trying to get some information on the dash instrument back lighting circuit on my UK 1978 Midget 1500. This has never worked on the car but after overhauling the wiring system as part of a stripdown I have and taking the oportunity to look at this issue I believe I have traced the problem to a mysterious black cylindrical unit I cannot find any refernce to, possibly a fuse The offending item is a black plastic tube approximately 14mm in diameter and 34mm long.
