Jim we bought a 2nd hand hardtop for the MGF and it was fitted until last week . It now occupies our daughters bedroom !!! the garage and sheds are for midget and sprite stuff !!!! The midgets hardtop is hidden under some shrubs in the garden !!!! I was amazed at how much noise deadening and extra rearward visibility you get with a hardtop relative to a soft top. Thanks much for the input. I thought about replacing with longer studs as Paul suggests, but getting to the securing nut at the base is a really tight fit with the rockers there. Can't get an open end or box wrench in there to loosen it. I would really like to avoid removing rockers to do this. So I'm thinking more along the lines of what Jim was suggesting. I may have to cut down the existing stud and retap to accomodate the extender nut. As it is now, with the new cover, the top of he stud is... MORE

Oh... You're right across the Sound from me (Stamford, CT), Mike. So I guess I know the temperatures you're running in, eh? :) Well, you've definitely got the right oil for the season for sure, and an excellent brand at that. And you haven't got an oil cooler thermo- stat (oilstat) problem 'cause you've got no oil cooler, so we'll forgoet about this as a possible source for low pressure. G'day back to you, Colin, I hadn't measured the drums when I posted the question. Today I got out the calipers and found that both drums are within ten thou of seven inches and with the light scoring they will only need a touch up. So I think I will keep the drums after they are skimmed but I will have to replace both of the wheel cylinders. This is going to be a newer old car than I anticipated. Naturally, Mike.. That's why we have "caution" (yellow) and "warning" (red) lights in the cockpit. Yor're supposed to be worried..."worried" means you're a normal, reasonably intelligent human being who percieves there's a problem which needs attention. BTW, when was the last time you changed the oil filter? 'Cause if you don't find anything wrong with the "sender" for that light, this is something which I would pretty much do automatically as the next step, whether the filter was new or not. Please some one tell me I'm not crazy: on a 79 Midget, the indicator lights from top to bottom are Yellow, for oil pressure, red for charging/discharging, and blue for high beams. Right? In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a... MORE
Measure the battery voltage, with an alternator it should be 14.7 volts (about) at fast tickover with no lights, heater etc on. You can buy a digital multimeter for 5 in our loacl market or maplins. Invaluable. Sounds like a dead alternator to me. Incidently the light only shows that there is a vlotage on the field winding of the alternator (self generating) not that it is actually charging. My 79 just started this weird thing: when starting up, the red light comes on and stays on for approx. one minute. Revving the engine slightly makes it glow brighter. The altenator belt is adjusted properly, the connections all seem clean and tight, and it's a six month old Diehard, so I don't think it's the battery. Any of you good folks have any ideas? Need to replace the 145SR13s on the original rims. Been told that 145s aren't available anymore and need to consider 155/80/13s. Would anyone mind sharing if they've had similar experience? 1972 chrome bumper Still working on my badge bar. Found I had to bolt the bumper on then fit the badge bar using another bumper fixing nut to hold it on. As regards the repro spot lights and the MGOC fixing brackets I had to make reducing sleeves so the spotlight fixing nuts did not go through the much too large fixing hole. Finally got a chance to follow the wires for the non working brake lights. The stoplight switch doesn't complete the circuit and light the brake lights, they do work when I use a jumper wire and short across the switch. The top dynamic menu didn't work well in with Firefox 0.8, and was still messed up in IE6 until I canged my font size. You may want to do something static until you can resolve some of those issues. I like the idea of a site dedicated to collecting resources for the sprite, but I question trying to launch another forum. I would instead like to see a list of existing forums and mailing lists. When I first got the bug for these cars, it was with a 65 Midget. I bought a 73 with no title for the drivetrain, and put it in the 65. The 1275 HAD t he hookup on the filter mount (spin on) so I just hooked the wire to it lik e it showed in the Bentley. A few months later, on my way home from Fort Wo rth, the light came on. How do you get that #@#**# key back into the fulcrum pin? I tighted the bolt backed it up until I could feel the key slip into the slot. It locks everything it place nicely, but the thread part doesn't show up at the other end so I can put the nut ont. I've grease the key, frozen the key,lubed it, no luck. And when you hammer the sh*t out of it, it pens, and distorts. Is it OK to grind it down a little bit to make it fit? thanks, Bruce "redrider417" 32368... MORE
