Hello Nigel, I do not have one of these cars myself, but I looked at several in the showrooms, and several of my friends had them. They were definitely not gloss and not matt. They had a fair degree of what I would call sheen. That is, the light could be seen to reflect off them. They had a tendency to go more matt with time (which was why many people fitted the stainless steel covers) Make sure that there is a coat of non porous paint underneath though. :-) It is very difficult to describe something like this... Could anybody tell me where on the gearbox the reverse light switch should be, I can't find it on my box and was wondering if it was posibly a dash mounted manualy operated switch or if my gearbox had been replaced with an earlier one (still rib case)? Regards Rob Batley "robbatley" 29316... MORE
Ed Great car, but the problem is it has blue seats and the seat styles changed at different dates depending on colour (I expect they were used up at different rates) and my 65 rebuild project (55554) falls right in the middle of the changes and came to me with no seats and black trim although the heritage certificate says red trim. According to Horler if it originally had red trim it should have buckets, if it had black trim it should have the later style seats like yours. Terry, Good idea about the new bulb in the old socket. Instead of the sky blue in side of case, you might consider spray glue and gluing in aluminum foil fro m the kitchen, with the shiny side out and leave it a little crinkled so as to disperse the light all around the inside more evenly. Might also be a good idea to try different lights etc, before putting back in the car. Som e of the high output LED bulbs are bright and draw almost no current. Guy, Try and place a little dot or square of black tape on the glass over the high beam lite. if that lowers it too much, try other colors or number of layers of tape to control the amount of light and the amount of "scatter" of the light. On the subject of brighter lights in the insturments, you might check on replacing the 12 bulbs with 6 volt units with the same base. They should be twice as bright and last 1/2 as long. Guy Hey! Thats MY cheapo trolley jack! My dad got me that for Christmas one year I think, and it's been so useful. Which alloy castings? The steering rack ones? I just cleaned them up with a wire brush in an angle grinder. The other silver things you can see are the shock absorber bodies that have been painted in silver hammerite. Hi guys As I couldn't upload any photo's to the photo's section of the yahoo group, I've uploaded some to the Files section. They're in a folder called Nigel-Blue71-Midget. Maplins have a web site (maplin.co.uk) and do mail order from it. The wire is quite thick for the panel lights and shoulds easily take the extra load. When I get to Maplin I will buy a holder and a halogen bulb, and try to modify the existing holder. In the past I have smashed up a bulb and mounted the new holder in the screw bit of the old bulb. Now the old bit screws into the original holder and the new bulb goes into the new holder. Got two problems, not a lot of light and bad... MORE
Brad ooooh you're my age, and there was me thinking you were an old fogey like the Cap'n! ;) I'm not with you on the slotted holes for the door panels. What slotted holes? Are you referring to the cut-out section for the internal door latch/lock? Or are you referring to the heat stamped pattern on the vinyl trim itself? I'm not planning on 'replicating' the vinyl trim for the door panel, only the hardboard panel itself, I'll re-use the old vinyl door panels which aren't in bad condition apart from one tiny tear on one of them. Cap'n It's coming on! I've been seriously hampered by the weather here lately, which hasn't been very conducive to spraying! We had snow here a week or so ago, since then its been milder but with that comes rain and wind; very windy here again today. But I've pushed on doing what I can, and the bodyshell with front panel assembly and both wings in position is now about 90% finished in gloss. Alan, I am one of the ones quite keen to brighten up the instrument lighting. When I am driving on rural roads at night I usually switch off all the dashboard lights. I love night driving on empty roads with the cockpit in darkness In fact the high beam warning light really anoys me - it is far too bright at night and I keep meaning to do something about that. Guy The shims are called anti squeal shims and are listed in the Moss catalogue, I have the shims on my 66 Sprite and the brakes don't squeal. The only problem I have with the shims is that I am never sure which way up to fit them since they have a cut out either at the top or bottom. Get some shims they can't cost much and should solve your problem. I think some people leave the shims out to provide more clearance when fitting the new pads, since they can be a tight fit, however like most... MORE
Dave... I could not agree more with you in your opinion of the running "sweetness" of the 1098 motor. My BE came with a 10cc. My prior experience having been limited mainly to street "tuned" (including balancing) 1275's and too a far lesser degree stock 948's, I was immediately struck by the stock 1098's silky smooth running/exhaust note. Not very strong top end but otherwise, performed just fine, most especially in terms of low end for normal street use. I mentioned the apparent smoother running of the 1098 as compared to the 948/1275 several times over the last couple... MORE
Terry, On the several that I have dismantled, they have all had mastic between bezel and glass, O-ring between glass and the next ring in, and an 0-ring between the case and the metal dashboard. I don't think there is supposed to be an O-ring behind the metal reflector ring. It is stepped and fits against the rim of the case, leaving a gap between it and the dial face to let the light through. One tip here is that you should save discarded O rings from the rear hubs as these will fit around the tach and speedo... MORE
Stewart, The subject under discussion is how to improove the instrument lighting, not simply how to replace the bulb. Part of the problem of poor illumination is caused because of deterioration of the reflective surfaces on the inside of the casing. That is why Terry is dismantling his to sort it out. Terry... I agree with Nigel asking you why all this for bulb replacement but I will answer to the extent I can 'cause obviously it's already out of the car!! :):) OK... 1. Yes (O-ring, gasket, rubber washer, bit of silicone, whatever! :) 2. Have not seen an O-ring between instrument and panel before. But I don't see why you could not do this, either. 3. Hi I would like to see what speed I am doing in the dark so Speedo is out and apart. 1972 RWA midget Questions Chrome bezel is filled with black gunge at rear, is this the remnants of an 0 ring that seals the bezel to the glass? Is there an 0 ring between the Speedo and dash board? The inside of the Speedo is sky blue from 1 o'clock to 7 o'clock and white for the other half. Is this correct and why? To fix this you are going to have to open up the case and get into the detailed workings. It is pretty delicate stuff in there and parts do wear out. You may prefer to get it to a specialist to recondition. If you do want to sort it yourself you will need to remove the chrome bezel and glass and then undo the two screws on the back of the case.
