I take some offense when they slight our speed. Perhaps not top speed but a warmed up 1275 and a numerically higher diff will embarrass many Porsches and 'Vetts and other expensive and highly respected "sports cars" in the international STOPLIGHT GRAND PRIX. I understood that the early cars had hand stamped numbers (cut, I believe the expression is) from the top . But the later cars had them stamped from the back resulting in raised figures that in theory could not overstamped. An anti theft device to stop people changing the identity of the car. I understand that there's a place in Brum (where else?) that supplies the c orrect VIN plates and know a place that can stamp the raised letters. I hav e the details somewhere. Dan Not from what I've just seen in Terry Horler's Original Sprite and Midget, they most definitely look stamped from the top - same as mine, same model version too. There is a distinctive 'cut' into the plate from above you can't achieve that effect from stamping from the bottom, and the letters aren't raised they're indented. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 27164... MORE

I think you'll find Machine Mart's are the type that you stamp the top, visible face of the plate, not the correct embossed-from-below type. David "David Jacobs" 27151... MORE

Mine is stamped from the top...it's a "replacement" I beat on it, smeared it with oil, stepped on and beat on it some more with a BFH... it now looks genuinely original...:) Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 27165... MORE
Nigel (& ohters), Nigel, congratulations having the car moving again! Mine is already for 4 years in the state yours has been for 15....(on axle stands). Did your spray the bottom already, or are you gonna remove the wheels and suspension again? I'm thinking of doing the whole bottom before putting it on wheels again. I've the same kind of problems as you have (small garage, not to much light, damp & cold) but am considering this approach because imperfections won't really show up due to the layer of flexible undercoating hiding them. I know how that feels, Nigel. When I started working on my Sprite last year the tires were flat and had glued themselves to the floor. It had been stored against the wall for 15 years. I had to use a long pole to pry/slide it away from the wall far enough to get an air hose to one of the tires so it would sort of roll. Now I have wheel dollies under all four wheels and it is easy to even move it sideways. It was a great feeling to move it out into natural light after... MORE
Cheers Cap'n! Well thats an estimate! I've been here (where I live now) for about 15 years and it was towed from my parents house and pushed into the garage when I moved, and then put on axle stands. I've pushed it out on the trolley jack and turned it round, but it's never moved on all four wheels since it's been in the garage, so yeah first time in 15 years since its moved on all four wheels! I have to say it did look good, with that classic 'tail up stance' that Spridgets have, I've missed seeing... MORE
Well, I just couldn't stand no being in debt. I had come into a small (and I mean small) amount of cash recently due to the sell of a piece of property in a ghetto. I spent a weekend recently at Elizabeth and Fisher Jones place in the hill country of Texas (take your hat off when you say that). I was there to persue Bambi and his kin with my cousin and grandson. I've tried using 'universal' spring compressors ie the type with two hooks on a double threaded rod, one RH thread, one LH thread, so when you turn the rod it pulls the hooks together. These are easily available in the UK and probably elsewhere, though I doubt if the VL Churchill item 18G153 is. The universal ones don't fit Spridgets well enough to use properly - the top of the spring is shrouded too much by the surrounding metalwork. Regards David "David Jacobs" 27064... MORE
Hi guys Thought I'd update you all once again on how the restoration is going. I've taken a few more pics that can be seen on the Yahoo Group Webpage in the Nigel-71-Midget Folder. Basically the rear axle is back on the car with the rear springs and backplates, brakes and hubs all reassembled. I've also nearly completed the left hand side (RHD Drive) front suspension. Hello all, Am I the only person looking at the messages regarding the Concord issue that sees "nationalistic" differences? It seems that - excepting the expert views of some members of the flying fraternity - most of the British views are concerned merely with the extraordinary expenses involved with the Concord and it's attendant problems, whilst the view from the USA seems broader and perhaps further sighted. Hi all! I got my new sealed beams from that place up North, they were really good. Unlike MOSS! ;) Anyway, They work fine, I had to been the chrome in three new places , as the 'Werner' beans had slightly different lugs and needed new holes to slot into the bowl. Aside from that all is good! Now, as for brackets.... I was hoping to be able to buy some. But can't find any. (I am going to attach the bracket to the bumper screw/bolts. So any recomendations there? Or am I going to have to buy 1... MORE

I have a rip free covertable top on it, and good black paint on it. The engine and transmission work good, I need to adjust the engine to run at normal speed. The brakes work and all the lights work. Hiya, Alan... All a question of extent in terms of earning and price ratios. I will give you an example. In 1958, my folks had constructed in gorgeous upper middle class suburbia a beautiful ranch style house in North Stamford. It went for $65,000. The average annual salary of an American Airlines Captain was around $55K or a little more at that time. Today, that house goes for about 1.5 million. The average AA Capt's salary today..... $250K. See what I mean. Average salaries are no where near keeping up with average rising costs in a lot of ways.... MORE
Martyn That's why you're meant to put the seal on while you're doing trial fits of the door, when rebuilding the body. (I've got this to come as I didn't put the seal on either!) The body side of the latch has a lot of adjustment potential, it's screwed into movable plates. Getting the doors to fit just right on these cars, really is one of the trickiest jobs to get right. The only lock/latch that doesnt have must adjustment potential from what I can recall is the one on the door itself. I suggest loosening off the hinges... MORE
Cap'n I'm not disputing its 'beauty' or it's 'technological ability' at all, in fact perversely when it did go over, you can't help but go out and watch it in awe as it flew over. What I am saying, and I think I've done so now, is that in this day and age why is something that is not only uneconomic but provides so much 'noise pollution' allowed to go on?
