Hi guys And please don't think I'm now restoring a Mini because I'm not ok ! It's about time I updated you folks on how the Midget restoration's coming on. The bodyshell is now about 90% complete in gloss coat, there's a couple of area's I need to deal with and a couple of panels to finish with 90/10 paint/thinners mix, to bring up the gloss. The bootlid has had 5 or 6 coats of 50/50 and now needs some 70/30, and 90/10 coats. Likewise the passenger door. The drivers door, is in primer now awaiting its first gloss... MORE
When I re-assembled mine I had a choice of three types. I wasn't sure which were the "correct" ones (that is in a Nigelistic sence of the word) but used the ones I like best. They are all chrome drop handles which I suspect come from an earlier model but they do look good. That left me with 2 pairs of those horrinble moulded plastic things that go on the later rubber bumper cars, plus a pair of the black plastic ones with chromed pivots like yours. I don't know where they all came from as a good deal... MORE

I have become used to it, because someone in the Tavistock, Devon, UK area has a white car consisting of a later rear half with a frogeye bonnet. The radiator grill is shiny chrome with the initials A H showing in cut-out letters. It does look a little unusual. If it comes out to play later this year I'll try and take a photo'. Two down without removing the dash . . . have nice clean tach and speedometer glass now but the worst ones are the fuel and oil/temp . . . may have to wait for a dash removal for those. Don "Don May" 28984... MORE
Can't stand the foggy film on the back side of the 72 gauge glass so it's about time to clean them. I do not look forward to removing them completely from the dash to do so. Hopefully I can loosen the mounting brackets enough to push them out far enough to twist off the chrome bezels and remove the glass for cleaning . . . anyone been able to do it this way? I have cleaned another car's gauges by removing them completely but that was a 62 MKI and there was more access space to remove the brackets... MORE
Don, I love your project and I like the idea of saving all the bits for the future. On vinyl spray, I have used it for many years off and on. It works very well and lasts quite well also. If it starts to crack or wear thin, it is easy to spray a little touch up. My only advice is to clean off area to be sprayed really well. I used lacquer thinner as I recall, but put it on a rag first and then light wipe to cut any grease or oil film. The vinyl stuck very... MORE
Hi guys, Have a few photos to share of the bugeye bonnet on my 72rwa. It is a work in progress, primer gray to sections as I get an ideas of what the best look is. As you may see still have various holes to fill . . . And much smoothing to do on the bonnet. Also is a photo of the door modification where I removed the wind up windows (doors from 69 parts car) cut the inside door metal work and also used the panels out of my 69 parts car to trim it out giving... "VIN Plate" Thank you, Nigel, Roger, etc.! I've never seen an oval one and on my PO'd '74 it was a long rect. plate up by the left corner of the windshield inside the car. it sounds a bit like a sliding sun roof, rather along the lines of the 'Web asto'. The plexiglass could be a wind deflector? Absolutely correct. You need a hole in your roof to fit it. Used on tin tops or occasionally in a removable hard top for a sports car, although I can't think why. Common fitting to MGB GTs Have a look on MGB site I'm sure you'll see one or two. Lost my low & high beam headlights, except for quick high beam flasher which I have to maually pull back on and manually hold back to activate the high beams. 90 Dodge Dynasty, tried replacing steering column mounted multi-function dimmer switch(no luck but interestingly, the switch was a LUCAS<PRINCE OF DARKNESS SWITCH! headlight in/out switch but it was replaced about 5-6 yrs ago. Also I might take it by Circut City where about 7 yrs ago they customized the wiring so that whenever the ignition was turned off, the lights would automatically go off even if they were left... MORE
Hi folks! I have just purchased a 1977 MG Midget 1500 in what I can only describe as 'tired' condition. Although it has an MOT it does have a few faults, and as I am not in the least bit mechanically minded I need some advice as to what repair is required. There is a water leak coming from the engine in quite a steady stream from somewhere at the top of the engine below the head: it is a bit difficult to see exactly where as it is obscured by the manifold and carbs.The water temperature gauge on... My take on it is this... The prop shaft as a unit, complete with the assembled UJ, does need to be in balance. I believe that they are balanced at the factory, but I don't know to what level of accuracy. I don't think that they are balanced as a unit assembled to the back axle, which is why I contend that the flange joint betwen UJ and axle pinion can be undone and re-assembled without need to mark it. Hi Everyone I am trying to identify some type of top/cover assembly that a friend has inherited. Possibly someone in the UK can help. A description: It is a vinyl peice aprox. 3'x4' with reinforcment rods under a headliner material attached. It comes with chromed finishing parts for all sides. It also has a piece of curved tinted plexiglass with mounting pins on each end for the front/rear 3' section. Sort of looks like a large sunvisor. The vinyl is flat, no sides or back window section. Son and the car are in Cincinnati. Body is good, little rust, no collision damage. We took the 1275 and the trany out to inspect, and all seems o.k. Things I think it would need are : Engine gasket set, clutch and slave, Motor mounts, battery and a soft top. If I where nearer I would have had it on the road. We have had it for about a year with no procross except the inspection. He was going to do the body work first and paint, I was more intrested in getting it running, for fun, then paint... MORE

Duncan I'm not familiar with the base coat/clear coat system, although the last time I ordered some cellulose gloss from my paint factor, they did ask if that was what I wanted, as thats the alternative to the 'all-in-one' system that I'm most familiar with and use. The all-in-one system contains the pigment and the gloss, and the high shine is slowly built up by successive coats, flatting back inbetween. To achieve the very high shine, you let the paint fully harden (4-5 weeks) then use a gentle rubbing compound on it and a rotary buffer. Regarding etch primer,... MORE

Jim, After moving the stands from the axle to the floor (near the rear suspension mounting points), I walked around the car and suddenly noticed the front floating above the stands (positioned under the front chassis legs...) So the car was performing an unexpected balancing act :-) and almost tilted to the rear. If this had happened it would for sure have fallen off the stands! I immediately increased the front weight by putting a number of heavy items on the front chassis legs! Afterwards I moved the stands to the boot-floor. The car is completely stripped in the... MORE
Duncan I'm not that familiar with the term 'lacquer' as far as I'm aware it covers pretty much all car paints, as they're all a form of lacquer. What I think you mean is Nitro-celullose Laqcuer, commonly referred to as just 'cellulose' and if you do mean this then yes, thats pretty much your only option for spraying at home. (some bright spark trying to be clever will probably come up with alternatives, but in practical terms 'cellulose' is your only option for spraying at home).
