I took the tinted deal. I warned Safelite it might be an odd job, and offered to bring it to the shop, rather than meet one of their "mobile units." For some reason when I called the second time to actually place the order, their quote dropped. Hopefully in a week I'll have my car back to 100% for $160 US (about what Moss sells the glass for) Thanks for the warning ;) Just the sight of that step by step gave me headaches. Chris It really does depend on what you're going to do and the standard of finish you want. Without knowing these things it's kinda hard to estimate a time frame. I thnk I read somewhere that for a ground up, nut and bolt rebuild you're looking at about 2,000 hours which is about 5 years worth part time. It's a balance between what you do yourself and what you farm out, but 2 1/2 years does seem a little optimistic to me. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 24387... MORE
G'day Adam, Nigel, Robert, Cap'n Bob et al The car in the photo, 7522N, is mine - the Fright. Bugeye tub, but now with 4.3 lt E-type running gear, except rear suspension which is Lotus 16 trailing arms and Chapman struts. Also Mk III doors and screen. 13" magnesium Minilites at the front and 15" at the rear. That's me in a khana. No problem getting around the flags with as much power oversteer as you like to dial in with the right foot. Look at the rear right tyre profile and compare the "bag" at the top and... MORE
LOL, Colin..."I knew that"! :) You're gonna say, "Yeh,....sure, right!" but I knew this was the Fright...I'd know the knockoffs and "flare" treatment anywhere! This car has a special place in my tiny brain 'cause I was going to graft a bugeye glass rear clip on my '67 which came with a BE bonnet and the Fright had appeared in Classic Sports Cars (I think I have the title right?) and was to be the "example" of what I was planning before my '67 met it's demise. The Fright has got to be a riot to drive, for sure!... MORE
Well I've gone and done it..the '60 is coming apart. Engine and trans are out in preparation of a complete refurb. At the very least this will include new inner and outer sills, maybe floors and possibly rear spring boxes. Paint will be redone and interior gone thru. I have a 1275 and ribcase waiting to be rebuilt and installed, along with Weber sidedraft etc. I am seeking suggestions on cams, porting and header. This will be a "quick" street car, neither a daily driver nor a "road racer." Any advice will be appreciated. At this point my proposed... MORE
Hi You can do it yourself, but it can be a pretty tricky job to do. First thing to watch out for is in the dismantling process, a lot of the brackets that hold the windscreen together have seized screws, if you damage them, or split the heads you've got a problem. Assuming you successfully dismantle the frame assembly the resassembly process is as follows - 1 Mount glass into new rubber beading surround. 2 Use vaseline or soap or washing up liquid to fit the glass and beading into the frame and fit side pieces. 3 Get some... I have a nasty crack in the windsheild of my '76 midget. One shop in town would be happy to replace the glass...for $600. The competing shop has a much more reasonable price quote, but they dont stock clear glass, and would have to put a piece with a slight green tint in. From the workshop manual, it doesnt look like a terribly difficult job, but the book doesnt give many details beyond the removal and refit of the entire frame. Is it a job I can do with my fair technical knowledge and a few extra hands? Is... MORE
Don, The boot or engine compartment is usually the giveaway. Check under the tail lights or other corner lights. Maybe it's just a fender that was repaired at some point. Gerard "gerardchateau" 24365... MORE

Thanks Nigel, I am almost certain that the original color is Black Tulip, however there are a few strange areas that cast some doubt. The space between the dash top and windshield, (windscreen)is a silver primer color. I have never seen this before. I have seen cheap paint jobs where it was left in the previous color. And there is none of the sloppy edges around any of the trim one finds when something has been masked off. All the far recesses in the trunk and underneath the car are Black Tulip. Then, when I removed one of the... MORE
Adam This really isn't an easy question to answer, which is why I suspect you haven't had many replies! I read this last night and I've been pondering it ever since! The first thing I think you need to do, is really decide what it is you wan =3D=0D t, and what your priorities are because many of your requirements seem to conflict =3D=0D with each other. To be honest, I think you need to forget about Frogeyes, they just are not =3D=0D within your budget of =A33,000, you can get Frogeyes for that money, but yo u'=3D=0D re... MORE
Kris The only information I have on this is that for the North American market only, at GAN6-166301 (Oct 1975) the bag type windscreen washer reservoir was fitted. Now I'm assuming you have a RH drive Home market car, in which case, yours would have come with the standard bottle type for 1500's. This is the best I can do. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 24338... MORE
David, Which "the book" are you referring to? There are many. The Bentley (factory manual reference) does if you have a late enough versoin of it. I posted the info in an earlier message. Early cars are opposite the pinion side on LHD cars and on the same side aftter the Triupmph rack was subbed for the Morris one. I am assuming the opposite is so for RHD in both cases. The packing is to ensure that the rack and the column meet at an accurate 90 degrees. So the packing piece could go on either side to ensure this, depending on where it is needed.. I don't think it relates to the year of manufacturer, but is just to adjust for "manufacturing tollerances" in the assembly of the front chassis rails and cross member. Assemble the shaft to the rack pinion, with the rack bolted loosly in position to the frame. Fix the steering shaft upper clamp bolts; spin the wheel left and right to get it "comrfortably aligned"... MORE
David, Apologies if this is stating what is already obvious to you but... The pinch bolt aligns with a "neck" in the steering pinion. So the bolt needs to be fully removed before the steering shaft will fit over the splines of the rack pinion. It then needs to slide far enough on for the pinch bolt to align with the waist part of the pinion. I assume you got this, but if perchance you are simply slackening the pinch bolt but not fully removing it, then this could be your problem. Guy "Guy Weller" 24290... MORE
Hi again: Thanks to all those that helped answer some questions I had about the carpet, that was most useful. I found that I have snaps on the footwell carpet and the trans tunnel. Question: The rear wheel arch cover pieces seem to have a small vinyl pad sewn into them. I assume this is a wear pad for the top frame? Or could I have placed this piece in the wrong spot??? They sure seem to belong there. Can someone tell me if there is a vinyl pad on theirs? Thanks Rio "Rio Rafael" 24319... MORE
Don, My '72 has the same design tonneau snaps you describe. I can't comment on how standard this was, but certainly not unique to your situation. As far as stretching, I would consider finding a Black Magic brand vinyl "restorer" which will revitalize/moisterize the vinyl. Don't use ArmourAll as it actually dries it out. The Black Magic will will slippery and look shiny at first, but dried to a natural appearance once it soaks in.. I had an old convertible top that fits you description that suffered the same problem. I had success streching the vinyl, but getting it... MORE
Hi, I'm currently speccing out a new car, and trying to decide what's affordable and what's not so I can keep an eye on prices for a while and hopefully pick up a good deal when I spot one. It will have to be a daily driver but I'm also fairly serious about making a start on sprints and hillclimbs (maybe a few track days too). As ever, I'm trying to keep the cost down, the budget will be roughly =A33k. #1 choice, even above cars well out of that price range, or more modern cars that might perform... MORE
My Black Tulip 73 has a Tonneau cover that is in near mint condition . . . except . . . because it seems to have been seldom, if ever used has shrunk. Unlike some other Tonneau covers I have had the backing material on this one is very heavy duty canvas which is giving me trouble. Very good quality and construction. I have been successful in stretching the lighter canvas backed ones back to fit but this one even taking advantage of the hot weather we are having has resisted being stretched far enough, close but not there.... OK assuming you also have the super profile by Lindsay Porter take a look on Page 41, this shows the interior of the area in question quiet well! Now the floor panel pressing never changed from 1958 - 1979, the captive nuts that hold quarter or semi elliptic spring hangers to the floor are in the same place. This means that the bolts that hold one to the floor can be used to hold Mk1 spring hangers in the correct place on a later shell. Ok the part that runs up the vertical face that holds the upper link... MORE
OK, the area around the spring boxes on the MK1 while physically solid has had patches of steel welded over other patches over the years, and the whole area including the rear inner arch and the reinforcement running round the boot floor like a chassis rail is quiet simply a mess, the whole lot needs cutting out and replacing. Now many years ago my dad and myself cut up a frogeye, and I have had to repair this area on my 1500 shell, and I can tell you one thing for certain, the 1500 shell has within the triangulated... Hi all I,m after a bit of advice regards my steering wheel cowl. just fitted an original steering wheel back on my 72 rwa midget but the steering wheel cowl that fits over the indicator stalk doesnt fit around the indicator stalk !! the stalk body is too long Do the indicator stalks vary in size I suspect mine is wrong. It has the flash/main beam plus horn push on it. The end of the stalk has a silver tip. Is this from a 1500 or am i blowing up the wrong tree ?? Cheers Dave "daveyd425" 24220... MORE

Stewart That's interesting, Teal Blue was never an OE colour for 1500 Midgets! It does sound as though you have a bit of a 'hybrid' car, a crossover car between the end of the chrome bumper cars and the start of the Rubber Bumper ones. They were well known for using up 'old-stock' components on the revised range. My own 1971 car is a little like this, having a bonnet prop, yet telescopic stay for the boot! The first RB cars were made in September 1974, first chassis number being GAN6-154101. I'm not really sure what you're trying to... MORE
