Don, Thanks for your help. I've come across the site myself and was definitely intrigued by the front bumper treatment. I've had my extended front "chassis" rails cut off to allow fitting an earlier year grill with no problem. I may even use the box section to feed the twin SU's when I install them. RE: Horn Not necessarily. What year car is yours? Later cars had a small cylindrical platic switch about the diameter of a Bic pen with a brass spring loaded contact at each end. Brad!! You don't know where the water went to? You gotta find out (obviously!!:). You running a bypass hose? Is it old (worn)? These little devils (most especially the new "fluted" ones) develop little pinholes (before they develop a big one "all of a sudden") and slowly seep water. No, the signal doesn't work when I hold the arm in one position or the other. There's nothing in the place where the horn should be. I guess I'll have totally redo that. "Virginia" 24674... MORE
Hey Don, I'm not sure my first reply made it to the list so I'm gonna do this again just in case. It doesn't feel like the turn signal arm is catching on what it's supposed to catch on to make the signal work. There's no resistance when I move the lever up or down. I haven't taken it apart yet to look because I'm just a little nervous taking the steering column apart. As for the horn, when I remove the cover in the middle of the steering wheel there's nothing there. No wires, no contacts no nothing.... MORE
Dave.... Same principle as A series or any other head. Larger intake valves improve breathing in terms of "mass flow" at the expense of "velocity" in terms of low end torque. Can you wait for the lettering spacing. I am having new outer sills fitted and the new ones do not have holes for the letters in them so I am recovering the old sills and going to make a paper pattern for the fixing holes. I will reference the front top and bottom of the sill on it. Then scan it in and anyone can have it. My master plan was to stick the paper on the sill with wall paper paste and drill through for the fixings then soak off the pattern. Terry "terry.isherwood" 24660... MORE
Don and all, This may be a good time to ask about a good way to re-do the rear end of my 75. I have taken off the rubber bumpers (making sign against evil as I type this) and have a good idea of how I want the front end to look. The back however is tough. The RB cars have the area below the tailights flatted off with quarter and rear sheet metal folded over and welded. Not real attractive. Gents, I am the proud owner of a two car garage to work on My car! Even has room for a good size workbench along the side plus compressor etc. On the downside: There are six cars in the drive. My MG and wife's TA (Pontiac) share it along with six bicycles, table saw, grand kids ride around toys, yard implements, frdge, lawn equipment and so on. First is to do with the lower rear curved bits of the rear wings just underneath where the rear light lenses fit, I'm referring to the later style rear not the Frog/Bugeye one. Should this lower rear curved area have a vertical seam joint in it? Where the rear wing is attached to the rear apron? Mine had filler covering this up and I'm not sure whether this rear join seam should be visible there or not. Nigel, It is still dark here but when it is light enough I will go out and make some measurements for you. I forget what year is your car? The lettering is still on my 73 however they were removed by a PO from the 74 but the mounting holes are all there and I could measure the mounting hole pattern for the letter set if you like. No, No, No! The Spridget sare unibody constructtion and as long as no structural panels are removed, the car does not flex (as in the Big Healeys or MGA's). The curve in the frame is that way to set the wheel castor. The frame will not straighten out when the engine is back in, nor should anything be done do accomplish same. Nigel, I referred to it not as a pinstrip, but graphics. Some of the others in discussion are pinstripes, but I consider the Flame 71 to be graphics. Correct period language would probably be either decals or pinstripes. I wasn't sure if you were referring to the same"Special" thing as you catagorized it as green/gold. The graphics on the Flame Midget are original to the car and I while it may not have come from the UK factory that way, I'd be willing to bet they were a US dealer option and not an aftermarket variable. Nigel, I don't think you should assume that just because pinstriping was not a factory finish option here in the UK, that it was not an original option over the pond as well. If MG did things for the overseas markets like triple wipers, extra indicator lights, pollution control stuff, then why not pinstripes? Hey, they even thought of putting the steering wheel on the wrong side just to attract extra buyers! A quick update on the progress of the Midget. I've got primer coats on the underside, a coat of stone chip and seam sealer on the seams. I decided to turn the car over and continue with the primer coats on the other panels rather than complete the underside with top coat, turn it over and put the wheels back on. It suddenly struck me while I was prepping the engine bay for paint, that with the engine in, the body alignment may be slightly different. Which brings up a question I have. Is there anything to stop a person from installing an earlier model dash 59 - 63 in a 73 Midget? Realizing the washer switch, turn signal switch and ignition switch would have to come off the steering column. Don "Don May" 24620... MORE

Nigel is most likely wishing he is having a nightmare and will wake up to a world without pinstripes, racing stripes and other so called auto adornments. What I find offensive are all those things "tacked on" to an "original" design to satisfy American auto safety laws. First the side markers and lights . . . tacked on, breaking beautiful clean surfaces and lines. Then those awful rubber boxes "tacked on" the front bumpers of the 74 looking like the car had hit a UPS truck full of black boxes. Then, followed by even worse crimes against automotive design... "I could never do that now". I, too, thought I had finally "grown up", Don May. Guess this comes at 70 rather than 60? ...the triple racing stripe goes on momentarily and now I am thinking of a "MARK I" windshield banner in tasteful silver with black block lettering. Both of these additions should make the insurance company most happy. Actually, such additions would have made the airplane a bit faster as well....but the Company frowned upon personalizing it's aircraft....they were no fun at all. Cap'n. Rob, that is were the double pinstripes on my 73 are located, just below the door handle between the handle and lock. White double ones that have sort of a half arrow shape at the front. I have an original British Leyland sales brochure for the 74 midget however it does not list pin strips as an option. Don "Don May" 24551... MORE
