Dear LBC listers, here is the latest scoop on our second bi-annual get together, BS session and Beer fest! OK, we have had a spy scout out a good location for our get together. Guys: Yes the stuff sets up as hard as a rock. Anytime I have used it I too sanded/blasted the metal back to bare ao not to take any chances. I think the problems may come from application over rusted metal areas, places you can't get all the rust off first. They do give good directions on it's use. Always wear gloves when painting with it, stays on your skin for weeks. And it does break down when exposed to sunlight, so you Must top coat if using in those conditions. Hi guys, Very happy to report I now have a good clue to the hard/no start problem on my full race 948 set up. Noticed that after a few seconds of cranking and some coughs while the motor nearly started, the ignition light went out. Pulled a plug and sure enough, Nice spark for a few seconds of cranking, then the ignition light goes out and nothing. on subsequent tried the light goes out immediatly when cranking and no spark at all. As regards flat or gloss, an old friend of mine visited the factory at Abingdon while they were producing rubber bumper cars and he said you could look down the rows of parked cars awaiting dispatch and pick out some that had distinctly more shiny bumpers than others, possibly due to different moulds being used. So it's your choice, but I think glossy looks better. However, the front and rears were actually different material, various sources say the rear is nylon (to resist fuel spills) and the front polycarbonate. Hi Rick The bumpers are just black rubber/faom which is not painted at all. They often go matt but polish up to a bright shine (like they should be) with black shoe polish. Use the hard wax that comes in a tin, apply with a shoe polishing brush and polish off with a duster. You should be able to see your face in them, in true British army style!! james "James" 31772... Hi, Curt... Pure race Huffaker carbs are modified to be "fixed" rather than "variable" venturi...IOW, the air valves are held fully open and machined to form the top of the venturi (or "fixed choke"..which is not to be confused with "choking" for mixture enrichment when cold). So, the butterfly works but not the air valve. Thus, to start "cold", you need to cut off part of the air supply to artificially enrichen the mixture. Hi All I have a 79 midget with rubber bumpers. I wish I had an earlyer model metal bummper car but I dont. :( My question is were the bumpers a flat look or a gloss look? My midget is in great shape and next year as I save cash I am going to have it painted.But for now I would like to paint them for this season. So flat or gloss? Groupies - Has anyone found a good way to strip the factory rust proofing from the bottom of a Midget? My 75 has rustproofing about as hard as concrete, I'll been finishing the top side and interior soon and was hoping to remove most of the under coating by hand someway to speed the striping process. Would a hand propane torch and a puddy knife work, or will I set it on fire? I have a small blaster and know it would take way to long to blast through all that sludge. Hi Ryan The heat shields are available new, I've just bought one for my car from my local MG spares supplier, Beech Hill garage! It's a pain to fit though, a real juggling act with the carbs.....why oh why are the carbs held on with nuts and bolts rather than having studs like an A series! Also it could be the petrol ageing the diaphragm, make you sure you buy top quality ones from a good supplier like Moss. Ryan Oh how I know how you feel... Check the oil in the dashpot, inside cap oh top of carb. Then remove the cover and check the rubber diaphram for any holes or tears. Either of these may cause the problem you are having. For now check the easy/obvious stuff first. Mike mk2sprite@... 31710... MORE

Hi all, What a day today was!! 120plus miles in bright Cornish sunshine! Cannot wait untill tomorrow! She is running like a dream carbs are a bit lean but gogin to sort that out tomorrow!! I really do Love these little cars! I filled her up with optimax she seems to be running well One problem is that the ignition light is glowing (only very slightly) when i am gogin slowly!! fan belt seems not to be slipping! alternator on the way out maybe?? Robert, I could just give her my house, and give all of my extra money (not any left anymore) to her lawyer and just skip all the pain and frustration it takes to get to that point. Too late - it's already been done - John Cooper did it with a Mini, and the factory did it with a Mini Moke (Twinni Moke). Neither of them were that successful (probably because they only had 60 or 70 psi oil pressure) David PS why bother locking the rear steering? it'd be much more interesting having both ends steer, and none of that wimpy Honda 4WS where they only have a limited amount of lock at the rear! I did consider it and even spent time looking for a decent car to buy but all the ones i looked at werent up to it unfortunately. ( i was very disapointed at what was on offer to be honest, and i was looking at paying pretty much top money) The thing is, i've owned the 1500 for a long time which makes it harder to part with. A common mod is to replace the locally operated valve (ie one with the hand wheel attached on top) with a remotely operated one which are much more commonly available. The advantage of this is that you can then buy a control cable (either a heater control from say an early mini or a choke control for a Spridget - I've used a rotary control from a B in my car) mount it in a suitable place in the car and you then can control the heat without having to get out and lift the bonnet (hood). How I came to a Midget...? A few years ago, my brother gave me a 1975 FIAT X1/9. He was having some problems with it. I got those fixed. It was a fun little car. Like a go cart, but street legal. Neil, Remember that the taller top gear you can get in the tranny is good for cruising but also allows you to run a higher ratio rear end which will allow better acceleration in sprints and hill climbs and still have enough top speed for highway driving. I used to use the Morris pickup truck diff (5.38:1 if my feeble memory serves) for autocross with great success but I sure needed a taller top gear or overdrive. I suffered on the freeway at about 6,000 rpm at 55 Mph, but it really did scoot through the gears!!!!!!!!!. Cheers, Bob... MORE
