Okay, ED - Here's the story: Grades 5, 8, etc are American designations which were never used in England. I don't know, and you don't either, what strength bolts and in which applications were used in cars of long ago. Maybe some of them were not very strong, but I can assure you that some were very strong. They were often not marked since their use was controlled by part number, and one would have to refer to the parts drawings and the old British Standards to find out exactly what they were. Don, Beware. I had a Midget with a similar modified push rod which I didn't know about. I installed a new 3 piece clutch kit and everything was fine for about 3 months until the thrust bearing went bang. New bearing .. went bang again. What has actually happened was that the thrust bearing operating fork has bent. This is not easy to see unless you have two of them side by side. This meant that the thrust bearing was no longer hitting the exact centre of the clutch leading to premature wear. Inspect all part carefully ! Regards... MORE
Here is a "we tight" replacement for when the coloured celluloid used in the metal dashboard arrow-shaped cut outs goes awol. The screw caps from plastic cartons of milk sold in UK supermarkets is just the right degree of translucency to cut to fit as replacements. You can even go for a choice of colours depending on full cream, semi-skimmed, skimmed or fruit juices. Not sure about you lot over t'pond. I know you have different dashboards and other habits. Hello, I recently purchased a 1974 MG Midget. I had a mechanic (not especially knowledgable with British cars) go over the entire thing and get it road worthy as it was parked for a long time. I put about 50 miles on it in August, and suddenly I have oil pushing up through the oil cap. It leaks all over the head and then gets on the manifold and burns. Gerard I think you're right, as it stands it really is beyond economic redemption. However, if it was a Frogeye, it would be worth the 50 quid, just for the registration and v5 and chassis number which you could then transplant onto a rebuilt shell and build one up that way. Cap'n Yes it does look like a Frogeye in the background, perhaps he has got it wrong. My devious mind had assumed tht he was trying to pass off that rusted heap of junk as a Frogeye knowing it to be more valuable, perhaps I was wrong as well. Hi guys Spotted this one while browsing ebay.co.uk. After you get over the horror of the picture, you'll realise that this er (how can one put this politely) 'heap of junk' is in fact not Frogeye at all, but one of the later versions. Hands up those of you who'd take this on as a restoration if it was a Frogeye? Hello there I am trying to get some information on the dash instrument back lighting circuit on my UK 1978 Midget 1500. This has never worked on the car but after overhauling the wiring system as part of a stripdown I have and taking the oportunity to look at this issue I believe I have traced the problem to a mysterious black cylindrical unit I cannot find any refernce to, possibly a fuse The offending item is a black plastic tube approximately 14mm in diameter and 34mm long. IIRC the fraction you refer to is in fact the number of teeth on the pinion/crown. Actually I was gong to ask about diffs any way. I have two for the frogeye (which has a later 1275 motor) the original one which IIRC is 4.55:1 and a riley 1.5 one which is a 3.7:1 diff. What would the effect of fitting the 3.7 diff to the frogeye have, as it stands its will rev straight through the red line and out the other side in top gear, even up hills speed at the red line is 80 ish with...
