Welcome to the list Paul. How long is it going to take? How long is a piece of string? They (being they, I mean people who have been down this path before) reckon that a ground up nut and bolt rebuild of any classic car will take around about 2,000 manhours of work. I'll save you the calculation of that into real terms - its about 5 years of part time (by part time I mean every weekend and evening) work. If you don't work on it every evening and weekend - add on the time accordingly - this... MORE

Thanx for all your input I'm really no wiser , Wires look the bizz on a show car. And didn't a spoke key come with the original tool set? Chrome wires are just too showy IMHO but probably easier to clean. I'll probably put them (painted)on the Frogeye as I guess I'll be putting more hard miles on the midget. I haven't found a definitive answer yet if painted wire wheels were an original option on the UK AH M1 Sprite It's all reversable though isn't it. Alan "Alan" 31063... MORE

Chris One of the favourite add ons inthe 6's and 70's was the air horn (FIAMME) Very loud and individual. I guess some where like Halfords still sell them. Easy to install, read the instructions. (I still want the multitone set that palys LA KOOKARACHA, although illegal on British roads as multitone horns are for emergency vehical use only, Oh and diesel locomotives ) The tone on some electric diaphragm horns can be altered by screwing a little adusting screw on the back of the horn, right in the centre. Building on what Duncan said, the book by Horler will list the colors and have some good photos. One place you can see chips/buy paint from the Autocolor library (www.autocolorlibrary.com). Another practical source for me is "Restoring Sprites and Midgets - An enthusiasist guide" by Grahame Bristow. He doesn't list every nut and bolt, but he does show the break down of many systems. One more place to look at paint listings is: http://www.mgcars.org.uk/midgetspriteclub/sprite/spritepaint.html Good luck. I'm doing much the same thing with my '61 Bugeye. Jim "JTMCO" 31041... MORE

In the Uk a new cylinder costs about =A330 ($50) and there aren't that many different types so all are easy to get hold of. I also almost always get away with a =A310 rebuild kit unless it has seized as a result of having been standing for many years. Regards Chris Valentine Dunlop Motorsport Don - Why would you want to sleeve a master cylinder? never heard of such a practice, thats something your better of replacing the whole thing, the shipping in both directions will probably pay for the new cylinder? It can be a reliable daily car if you look after it.. I ran a 1959 frogeye from 1998 to 2001 as my only car, clocking up in the r egion of 40K in that time. The car was not a prime example when I started and its still not a prime example. It had been modified, (1275, ribcase box , Disk front brakes, later diff, 3.9:1, Fiberglass bonnet,). Mainly to save the steel bonnet, and make it a truly usable car, which it was. In the 150 0 already has most of these parts. I did service it... MORE

Ben, My 1500 has Peco exhaust, oil cooler but no magnetronic ignition or kenlowe fan, from Nov 2002 until Oct 2003 it was in daily use and i covered 15000 miles in that time as well as several large jouneys includng Le Mans and back which all told was 1000 miles in 4 days. (I'm in the UK) My car is far from perfect but regular and pre-emtive maintainance is the key to reliablility. Once you've ironed out all the faults that the previous owners failed to take care of (in my case my own brother!) its pretty easy... MORE

depending what car the rear axle came off, it will only be a bolt-on fit one or the other of your cars - the quarter elliptic rear suspension of the frogeye had slightly different spring mounts on the axle casing when compared with the later semi elliptic springs. Finally got around to restoring the seats. Got covers from England and components (webbing, foams, etc.) from M*ss. Everything went together nicely and the seats look great. Installed the driver's seat last night. Maybe I am used to the old worn out seat, but it seems I am really "high" (insert joke here...). The seats are very firm with almost no "give". From the bottom of the steering wheel to the top of the seat is five inches. I feel as though I am looking over the top of the windshield, rather than thru it. Is this all just... MORE

I have a pair of front stub axles and complete rear axle with tube shock conversion with a set of wirewheels. In need of some TLC. My RWA midget, under restoration, has Rostyles also in need of TLC. I believe my Frogeye* also has pressed steel wheels, in need of TLC. When restored, the midget and frogeye will both be useable but not concours. However, The frogeye will be more of the show car and used for runs etc. The midget will be used for fun 'driving'(read hooling around , commuting to work, having a blast etc) So, which... MORE

cwt = a hundredweight, the "C" is from latin for 100. Only 1cwt isn't 100 lbs as you might expect it to be Its 112 lbs, or 8 stone (1 stone = 14 lbs) Clear? Its proper English weights, not that metric stuff they use in Europe. Guy "Guy Weller" 30847... MORE

Thanks Nigel, the url cleared up this. Didnt know there was a difference between a us and a uk 100 weight. Jens Close - but no cigar! You used the American 'hundredweight' which is 100lbs. The English 'hundredweight' is 112 lbs, and as they were made in England one should use the English version. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 30837... MORE

Pre-rubber bumper UK spridgets (and US ones up to...?) had the same pressure switch - I've replaced it on mine after about ten years, so they're not totally reliable! One trick I someone told me was to pour boiling water then ice-water over the switch to free it up in case something had got stuck inside. This worked to some extent, but I thought it was safer to have the brake lights coming on before the car was standing on it's nose! David "David Jacobs" 30780... MORE

Tensile strength B.S.S. Grade 'T' 55-65 T/in (850-1005mPa).
