I guess you mean the bootlid, Margaret? Must make visibility a bit tricky if the spare's on the bonnet! It's easier to do the bonnet with the hinges bolted to the car because the bolts are inside the car, not in the engine compartment. This means the bonnet manouevrer can't see the bolt holes, and the bolt-putter-in-er can't see the hinges as they approach and with a heavy frogeye bonnet, it must be 100 times worse than with just the hinges by themselves. Hi everyone When replacing the frogeye bonnet, is it best to fit the hinges to the car first, then bolt the bonnet on? Or is it best to bolt the hinges to the bonnet and then offer the hinges up to the car? Regards Chris "howes" 26682... MORE
Hi, I regularily replace the bonnet on my midget. I have a spare with the wheel bracket fixed on it, so that when we go on holiday we can get our luggage in the boot. We found the easiest for that is to have the hinges fixed to the lid, then offer the whole lot up to the car. But even for the boot it is a two person job. It might be best when replacing the bonnet that there are 2 helpers, to hold it steady!! Taking it off is far easier than replacing it!! May you be... MORE

the 'MAA' chassis number prefix is either a 1980 model Rolls Royce Phantom VI (honest!) or in BMC terms, the first character, M, is for Morris (we would expect G for MG or H for Austin Healey or A for Austin), the first A is strictly speaking a sub 1200cc engine (ie A series) and the second A is the body type (not sure what 'A' is - though it's definitely not a Spridget which would be N - 2 seat tourer) CKD cars assembled in Australia had different prefixes, (YGGN or YGN) so it's not one of those,... "Is it just me?" No Alan East-Jones, it's not. I have no interest in guns and beer, fr'instance. But I sure don't mind others swapping mails over these subjects at all. Nigel, et al Nut splitters do work , if you don't buy cheap ones , low cost is good - ch eap is not. Same with all tools really. When replacing track rod ends etc there's nothing wrong with using a small amount of anti seize grease or LM (Low Melting temp.) (I like LM10 )I also use WD40 if the thread is trapped at each end and is virtually air tight so the WD40 doesn't evaporate. It's the mechanical stretching of the threads that lock parts together. Nigel, When being brutal with the steering rods / arms make sure you don't bend th em. Another effective way of making the track rod end flats useful is to grind the flats parallel and obviously closer together to be a good fit in a good open ended spanner. You should be changing them as a matter of course any way at only =A36:50 or each, so don't be afraid of damaging the TR ends per se. Is it just me , or has anyone else noticed a distinct lack of LBC content o ver the last week ? I thought this is what the LBCnonLBC site was set up for. Aw come on Phil, There is a very active midget and sprite group group in the Midlands. If you join the Midget andSprite club (the setters up of this web group BTW) For not many quids a year you get a monthly magazine , packed with pictures , area reports and information. In fact, if I remember correctly , not too long ago there was a bit of conflab regarding the copious amount of Frogeye sprite content and not so much of the midget. I am at last a stage where I am trying to install parts on the car. When the old ones were removed, a mere 15 or so years ago, everything seemed so logical & it appeared that everything would just pop right back in place. Sound familiar? I kept all my old brake pipes etc. labelled everything & took lots of photos. However I didn't take enough. The old enlightenment question of "what color is government" is being played out worldwide in some interesting new situations. The key to the future will be how well the more politically advanced countries (USA, UK, etc.) resolve the question. Is government a force for good operated by imperfect people or is government a force of control, repression and tyranny that is a necessary but ultimately uncontrollable part of human existance. HA! I just called Victoria British and told the young lady I needed new wheels for my 73 MG Midget. Her response? "the whole wheel? like the tire?" She finally told me the only wheels they have are Dunlop wires. I gave up. I am looking to replace the wheels on my 73 Midget. I was putting this off, but now I find my tires are weather cracking, so if I am going to buy tires, I may as well buy some that fit the new wheels. Not sure if I want replacement wires, or knock off mini lite replicas. I did a google search for wire wheels and found this one location Frank should love: http://www.made-in-china.com/ British wire wheel has the wheels, but only in 4/4.5 inch width. Bill, if you feel up to working out all that complicated geometry, for the mechanism, you might give it a go, but I should warn you Les Ireland and the Healey team spent YEARS perfecting that design! The packaway type from a '62 probably won't fit - the 'screen is different; one from a 64-66 would certainly fit the windscreen and door glass, though you'd have to do some serious modifcation to the rear of the cockpit area to get it to fit there. A better solution might be to admit defeat and get a roll bar that still... MORE
