Son and the car are in Cincinnati. Body is good, little rust, no collision damage. We took the 1275 and the trany out to inspect, and all seems o.k. Things I think it would need are : Engine gasket set, clutch and slave, Motor mounts, battery and a soft top. If I where nearer I would have had it on the road. We have had it for about a year with no procross except the inspection. He was going to do the body work first and paint, I was more intrested in getting it running, for fun, then paint... MORE

Schmidty on the mgbbs spridget technical board is in need of a 1500 engine. He wants to find one locally. I know nothing else, except that there are some Texans on this list. If one of you has a suggestion, maybe you could spring over there and post a note. Yes, I have a standard Small British Garage (SBG) and have removed two rear axles and suspension in one go. Putting back together will probably as ind ividual parts though. As far as I can remember, I placed a wheelable trolle y jack under the diff housing I put axle stands with about 9" square 1/2" ply between the stand and floor pan (to spread the load) on either side of the car, under the rear bulkhead. Thanks for the comments Dave. My own car is a '66 midget Mk2. It came with a red interior, and the cowl was also red. The following all refer to the midget Mk numbers. The Mk1 had body coloured turrets. The Mk2 had carpet coloured turrets. I had a friend with a Tartan red that had a red turret and another with a blue midget with a blue turret (as per the original Mk2 brochure in my possession) On the Mk3 the turrets were red for a time when a red interior was fitted, as another club friend of... Roger I have a 65 and a 66 Sprite (both MKIII Sprites) the 66 had no cowl when I acquired her (she had an aftermarket leather cloth thing instead) I fitted a new cowl and painted it black in line with Horler's bible. I have just checked my 65 ( which is a basket case I am rebuilding) and to my surprise it has a red cowl. I even scratched some paint off (hell it will need a respray anyway) and can find no layer of black between the red and bare metal, so you may well be correct.... MORE

As I am sure you are aware, at certain times and with certain models, manufacturers maintain production levels well beyond demand levels and stockpile the surplus - we have all seen photos of acres of brand new cars standing out in all weathers for months on end before eventually being distributed to the dealers. ....only I don't think that Spridgets ever fell into that category, so I doubt that that was the reason in your case. OTOH the British Motor industry was rather prone to frequent strikes and walk-outs at that time. Maybe this would explain the "approximate" production... MORE

I and several other people round here have good experience of the Ignitor (Pertronix in the US, Aldon in the UK). Hides complete within the cap. Castor Oil & Castrol (Castrol R) Got to admit, Dave, I've no clue 'cause I do not know whether the "early" Castrol Oils I grew up with in the late 50's & early 60's were vegetable oil or petroleum based, though I believe it was the later. And the Castrol's before that??? Castrol "R"....formulated for high rpm higher pressure, anti-foam, "racing" oil I would think but here again, not familiar the specific base or formula. But I bet Chuck Christ might know a little about the early Castrol Oils considering his Dad was in racing during Castrol's early days... MORE
Dave, It sure is the same. I still remember the smell today. I was at the vintage races in Coronado CA a few months ago and some old UK iron trundled by and that great smell just grabbed me by the nose and transported me back to my early days of racing. Bob I am not sure if it is the same thing, but when I was a very small child my Dad was interested in Motorcycle scrambling and so I was often at scramble events with him (maybe 50 years ago) but I still remember the smell. I think he told me it was Castrol R oil a kind of vegetable oil used in the bikes, could this be the same as your castor oil (or maybe a UK equivalent). Regards Dave "David Dixon" 28509... MORE

Both my certificates came with an exact date (maybe it is different for exported cars) although the 66 Sprite was down as an MKIV (not MK III as it should have been) when I phoned them a corrected certificate arrived in a couple of days. Both my Sprites were listed as having red interior trim when built but both had black when I got them. According to Horler red and black were options for the body colours but I find it hard to believe that coincidentally both cars had owners who decided to go to the trouble and expense... MORE
Gee Nigel, I don't know whether you mean to be or not, but you really can be terribly offensive sometimes! To address your specific "you're wrong" comments: I have a BMIHT Certificate for HAN9/85286 (we paid for it) stating this car was built in October 1969. Ditto, a BMIHT Certificate stating that the first Austin Sprite, HAN10/85287, was also built in October 1969. Perhaps you have a better source of information than the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust? If so, please share it with us. Please re-read my email - I said "Now if they built the same number... If you know of a web page/site of particular interest then you submit the link and a breif description. Then the blurb is published and people can visit the site and make comments about the page.
