Hi guys At last I've almost finished the paint stripping/underseal stripping. What a boring, tedious, monotonous job that was! By far the worst I've had to do so far and I'm so pleased its now almost finished. This does now bring into focus the filling/spraying aspect. All of the car has now been taken back to bare metal, and I intend to spray an acid etch primer coat on top of the bare metal, before the primer coats. Now, the question is, should I put filler on before the etch primer or afterwards? Second question is, there is still... MORE

Mark Don't do it the gauge is easy to remove the dash is not. Just undo the knurled nut at the back of the clamp and pop it out, the oil pipe union can be unscrewed from the engine or the back of the gauge (once popped out) the water temperature sender connection if it is into the rad (as mine is on the 66) can be a bit of a pig to remove without damaging the sender cable but if you are renewing the gauge this will not matter. "I am building a 1275 to the specs of my 1340 Cooper S that I had in the UK. I had the cam ground close to the 731 cam that I had in that motor. It will have a big valve head and cooper s distributor. It is .030 over. I have several leather hides and decided to cover all panels and dash with that. I put floors, lt rocker and A post piller sections back in it plus a new bonnet. (Since buying a bonnet I bought a 68 with an excellent bonnet for $400.) Oh well. All... MORE

Margaret, I am envious! I have long dreamt of buying a cottage in Scotland. Have spent most of my holidays over the last 20 years there. I have been to just about every place that David mentioned from his visit. On many occasions this has been by MG. Such superb roads for travelling on!! I have just returned from a weekend in Glasgow, celebrating my younger daughter getting her Uni Graduation. Hi all, Well I am now back home from my week in Scotland, with over 100 e-mail waiting for me. I drove up in Ava, my Mk 3 Midget, and she behaved beautifully over the 503 miles. Only did about 40 miles while there, as we drove in the CRV each day from our B&B to the cottage we are renovating. We achieved what we set out to do on this visit, i.e. lay a concrete floor in one of the downstairs rooms, have the electrics hooked up properly to the new wiring, and get the windows in where... Welcome Home. I put many enjoyable miles on my Sprite on several trips to Scotland while I was stationed in England. The ignition switch is giving me problems. It no longer springs back to the on position after starting the engine and the starter doesn't disengage when the switch is manually moved from start to on. I have taken the steering wheel off and am stuck at the plastic cowling surrounding the switch. The turn signal stem won't let me pull out the left 1/2 of the cowling and the right 1/2 seems to be stuck in place also. Any tips on getting the faulty switch out of the column? Heh, heh.... Well, Terry.. ......if he's capable of doing his own machining then it's basically his time and not really the money that is at stake. With a proper biasing valve it should work. Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I, too, find the stock brakes pefectly adequate. Wonder what it'll be like when he hits the pedal in the rain? Probably have to crank in a little more bias to the fronts, I would imagine. Which will probably defeat the whole purpose of discs in the back for superior stopping in the dry? On the unit I have there are three bend over metal tabs holding the case sections together. Carefully bend them up to pull the unit apart. There may be some resistance at the float shaft end that looks like a slotted screw to pass through the hole, a little cleaning there and you can pull the case apart enough to remove the brass spring. I also rubbed the ends of the spring on fine sand paper and cleaned the case surface around the shaft hole where the spring contacts the case and the surfaces of the round bushing next... MORE

Look at lots of cars then you'll get a feel for price. If you are not sure then once you feel you have a good candidate then pay for an inspection. Remember that mechanical faults are much easier / cheaper to fix that structural ones. As long as the car is sound then you can improve it but with a shoddy body you are always fighting against the tide. I am about to insure my frogeye lovingly reconstructed by Robs Frogs. Does anyone have any good experiences with insurance companies or companies they can recommend (please give reasons if possible)? (One insurance company told me I shouldn't want to use my car for occasional business purposes, but I take the view that it's up to me what I do with my car, and up to them to tell me how much it will cost to insure!) Wood & Pickett do a kit for the Mini, it could probably be adapted. Moss and /or Minispares should sell it in the UK. Whether you want to get rid of the manual winder is another thing.
