How 'bout this: We've all got a box or two or three full of parts which are "Not Good Enough to Use, But Too Good to Throw Away". If we all cleaned out our garages, we could prolly come up with a few tons of stuff which we could box up and send to Bree. If I did, I'd own a $100k car, and then I'd be afraid to drive it. The new clutch works just fine, and those "brittle" grade 8 bolts haven't snapped like soda crackers either. Ah, gotcha'. The problem is one cyl only, the others are fine on bore size and make no noise. The slappy cylinder has good compression, 155 psi, and it doesn't show any smoke or use oil. The only problem, at the moment anyway, is the noise. Maybe it's only an aesthetic thing, but it bugs me. Not enough however to justify a rebore and new pistons (and while it's apart, mains and rods and thrust washers, and might as well do a valve job, and while I'm at it, how 'bout an Al head, etc.) I digress. Paul.... "Thin flange" refers to the thickness of the actual wall of the block, this thickness being most apparent in the block's lower "flange" which borders the oil sump. As far as I know, the company went to thicker wall ("thick flange") 1275's by '68. For stock bores, the thin-flange was not a weak engine. I tested a Judson blower on a stock bore thin-flange '67 for many, many runs at 4-6psi to 6,000rpm and while we did not retain the blower, there wa s no apparent engine damage as the motor continued to run just fine for man... The Haynes manual is ok for the gearbox, but not really adequate for a complete rebuild of the diff. You need all the crown wheel and pinion setting information, most of which is in the factory manual; however, even this source has a couple of critical bits of info missing, which are the sizes of gauge blocks for setting the crownwheel and pinion positions. However, you can easily go some way to taking up some of the slack and at little cost, too. The thrust washers for the spider gears can be replaced without too much difficulty. Let me... MORE

I bed to differ, the flywheen on the 948 is IIRC much deeper, and it hits the back of the bell housing with the ribcase gearbox or it did when I tried to do it (I eneded up taking the flywheel and back plate off the blown 1098) The 948 that was in my frogeye (which also has a ribcase geabox) that I repeleced with a 1275 also had a 1098 flywheel As for the later gearboxes allgedely superior blauk ring syncro, wears out just as quickly. There are only two reasons to fit the ribcase, you are fitting... MORE
Flywheels are matched to the engine, NOT to the transmissions!! Putting a ribcase on a 948 requires a thick back plate as the input shaft protrudes forward of the case more. Some will bottom out in the crankcase and there will be no neutral and soon no input shaft bearing!! Later gearboxes have superior baulk rings for synchronizing gears, the early ones have brass cones as synchronizers. They don't work very well unless you drive like great great aunt Matilda!! I hate to be doing this, but I own a 1962 Sprite and I am looking for a a good home for it. I got it in 1970 and in 1975 the rear axle broke. It has sat in a garage up until 5 years ago and is now under a tarp. I do not have the time or place to restore the car myself and having a pro do the work is out of my budget. Let's see, You are saying that last year when I was driving My Bugeye, and the gauge worked just fine, then a month ago when I filled the tank, so it shows "Full," but I drove it 70 miles (6 gal gas tank) and it stills says "Full", it is a "discontinuity" problem that I should look for.... Im having a spot of bother with a '59 Sprite. The fuel gauge always registered about a third full so while I had to remove the tank, I carried out some resistance tests. The sender unit came up as faulty so was duly replaced. Now that the new sender unit is in place, I am getting full on the gauge when the ignition is on. I have checked the wiring to the sender unit and it is not earthing anywhere. The owners handbook has some tips regarding testing of the fuel gauge which I have tried but I am... MORE
