Don... Usually, to the average owner, having to pull a perfectly good motor to replace a malfunctioning clutch is a PITA. Unless you are a "Clarici", it is s time consuming and/or labor/money consuming. Unless your clutch parts are basically new, I suggest you replace ALL while you are "in there" as considering the foregoing, clutch parts are cheap. Nothing like replacing a disc today, and having to go through the whole process again to replace a pressure plate or worn T/O bearing 6 mos down the road. And ask him what the flipping reserve is, 9 times out of 10 ebay sellers will tell you the reserve, it's in their interest isn't it? Then decide if its what you really want, if it is, stick your bid down equalling or beating the reserve about 10 mins before the auction ends. David Yes, I'm fully aware of that, but its 'perceived value' isn't it? Also I th =3D=0D ink Sussex Sports Cars are particularly expensive as dealers go. I also had a browse a =3D=0D t some of the other cars they had for sale and spotted a very nice Series 1 L =3D=0D otus Elan, price? a snip at around =A325k! I also don't think it is 'just' the 'rarity' factor, I could quote you many =3D=0D 'rare' cars that don't fetch lots of money, because people don't want them. Duncan I'm not really sure either, but I think it's by 'application' ie what car they were fitted to. eg AUD136 was fitted to the Midget MkII, 1098, 1964 and AH Sprite MKIII 1963/4 and MKIII, 1968/9 Needle sizes were RICH H6, STD AN, Weak GG Blue Spring Colour AUD266 was fitted to the Midget MkIII, 1275 USA spec 1968 Needle sizes were STD AN, Blue Spring AUD328 was fitted to the Midget MKIII, 1275 USA spec, 1968/9 Needle sizes were STD AAC, Blue Spring From what I can tell all the HS2 throttle sizes were 1/1/4. Chris You know, I had a funny feeling that it may have been the car you were talk =3D=0D ing about earlier, don't ask my why, I just 'felt it', and you should have said =3D=0D - it had been restored 8 years earlier!!!! *smack on the wrist* I can guarantee you this Chris, once you've owned a Midget (or Sprite) you =3D=0D won't ever want to sell it! G'day Robert I have sold and/or fitted about 5 sets of MGB wheels to Sprites. Standard MGB is 14 x 5, and chrome ones are about 2/3 the price of Sprite/Midget chrome wheels. With low profile tyres, they have close to the same rolling radius as the original 13" wheel, but they fill out the mudguards much better. And they fit under the standard square wheel arch. No modification at all is required on the rear. On the front, you might need to relieve the brake caliper a little, as the wheel centre is a different shape and on... MORE
Chris I do understand. It's just that I'm trying to get you to avoid the pitfall I fell into! I wa =3D=0D s much the same as you, did lots of research, got itchy feet, looked at loads of cars, =3D=0D finally fell in love with one, nice colour, wire wheels, looked pretty good, had, h =3D=0D ad lots of work done to it by the previous owners (mechanical) took the plunge =3D=0D and bought it. Chris Well 2-3k is definitely in the 'dodgy' middle-ground category, where you're =3D=0D going to find the bodged and rusty ones for sure. If thats your budget, you can find reasonable 'honest no-too-messed-about-with' cars, but they will all probably need some work doing to them. Once again I will emphasise how important it is to choose wisely, 2-3k is a =3D=0D difficult price area to find a good one, lots of lemons about going for tha =3D=0D t kind of money. Chris Without seeming to be rude or nosy, what is your budget? Knowing that will help clarify what kind of car you're likely to get for yo =3D=0D ur money. Also, did you consider going and taking a look at that car shown on ebay? I =3D=0D can't emphasise how important it is to actually get around and look at cars =3D=0D , you'll soon get a feel for which ones are good and which ones aren't, also =3D=0D where to look for trouble spots, it'll pay dividends in the longer term. I can't help just jumping in here. I am also from the Rat Fink generation of hot rodders. We used to solve our wheel problems (read no money for Mags) in the old days by taking the steel wheels to a guy who would cut out the centers and reverse them to get a wider stance and weld them back in. When we wanted wide wheels, he would do the reverse center trick and then cut the rim around on a lathe and add a ring of steel, what ever width we wanted to go. 1 inch, 1.5 inch... MORE
8o) For one inch of split / rusty seam. Nigel writes "...you'll have to take the entire seam off, determine how much of the rear wing/rear body deck is rotten, cut out the rot and replace with new steel." This is precisely the way to turn a mildly rusty runner into a 5 year restoration project. Chris You're most welcome to the help, thats what the list's here for. I'm also in Surrey as it happens. If you're looking for a usable Midget, rather than a 'concour's or 'rust heap' theres plenty to choose from, but the expression Caveat Emptor definitely applies to this group of cars, ie the middle ground. The first piece of advice I can give you is to look at the bodywork very carefully indeed, as this is the most expensive to fix by a long way. Hi David- Couldn't access the pic at all. Thanks for your help. I am still trying to figure out the attachment problem on my car. When I started my restoration, I stripped the car down to bare metal. Found the right wing had a bit of repair. All other panels were perfect. Sought out a NOS wing in England and was lucky enough to find one (this was about 8 years ago). Bought it, bolted it on, and the fit was excellent. But for some reason, the wing does not have a hole drilled in the rain gutter for... MORE
Yes, Chris.... Makes perfect sense. On my older LBC's the VIN numbers were all "indented" as in stamped from the front. On my '74 Midget, the VIN plate was riveted to the metal by the left windshield post, forward of the "rolled" top portion of the dash, just to the left of the LH defroster duct. I take it you have the bracket (AHA8779) made out of a strip of steel folded into a sort of triangle? The bottom of it bolts to the inner wing and the top bolts to the 'rain gutter' edge of the wing. My friends, Please excuse the NO LBC CONTENT. As many of you know, my son Alex in in Iraq. He is in an area north of Baghdad with the US Army's 4th Infantry Division. Last Sunday they were in a big ambush, firefight where 6 of their men were wounded and 46 enemy were killed. While I think they are unfair to the frogeye, I have to say I can't really see the frogeye as twice the car that the later spridgets are, but it does have twice the price and so I would never actually pay for one (My frogeye was free!) actually I would say the chrome bumpered non RWA 1275 spridget i s the best all round value for money spridget.
