Mike, You have the two green wires (Green & Green/black) reversed. Swap them and see what happens. The green wire is the 12 volt source wire and goes to the "B" post on the fuel gauge and the Green/black wire from the sending unit goes to the "T" post. G'day Mark Jon is correct - that's pretty much the way they are. However, it isn't pretty much the way they WERE. First gear will be a LITTLE bit noisier when the gearbox is in good condition, but certainly not a LOT noisier. Added to the symptom of jumping out of gear (which it should NEVER do) you should budget for a greabox rebuild really soon. If you don't, the bits of metal coming off 1st gear will get tangled in the bearings and other gears, and your repair bill will be higher when you eventually get to it.... MORE
G'day Phil It is important that the mounting bolts remain loose, and the bushes able to rotate, until you have the car back on the ground. Then tighten the bolts. In operation, the bush doesn't rotate, rather the rubber flexes. Under load on the ground is the "neutral" position. If you tighten it when the car is in the air, the bush will already be under stress when you drop the car to the ground, and it will not survive many miles. G'day all Let's start with a definition. Those non-standard tubular pipes that bolt onto your cylinder head to let the exhaust gas out, and eventually join into one "collector" for the exhaust pipe, are called "extractors" or in some languages "headers". "Exhaust" includes these plus everything down the line, past the muffler to the chrome tip on the tail pipe. I guess we are talking here about insulating the extractors, not the entire exhaust system. We run in all our engines on a calibrated engine dyno. Mark, Yup, that is pretty much the way they are. Think of first as only to get you rolling then go to second. First is always noisier but the popping out is a sign it's got wear. Also never sit with your foot on the clutch at a light or such as it doesn't have a real throwout bearing and it will wear out fast. Just use the clutch to put it in gear and get moving. Well for what it's worth 32 years ago I flipped a 62 sprite by running off the road skidding sideways. Front wheels were in the ditch rear wheels were up in a yard ended up hitting a rock on the passenger side rocker panel which in turn put as airborne and we ended up in the middle of the road upside down. No roll bar I was sore without a scratch my friend ended up with seven stitches to the back of his head from the support bar for the top. I personally think in this case a roll... MORE
The bleeder thingy should be either 7/16" or 3/8". An ordinary end wrench may work, but if they are stubborn, it will just round over the fittings and slip. Busted knuckles, much swearing, a trip to the store for new ones follow. Much better to have a couple special purpose wrenches which are made for use on tubing fittings. You'll need only a couple to do the whole job, so pick them up for a few dollars wherever you get the new brake lines. They'll save a lot of headaches. If you decide to replace all the lines, plan... The brakes failed on the way home and I had only one week to get the rust repaired so that I could renew the registration. The back side of my Sprite's bumpers have been painted with aluminum paint which I would like to remove. The paint remover which I have on hand (POR Strip)says to not use it on chrome. Hello Colin, Getting upper and closer personal, I am 62 (and dipping in the Social security till), have also owned Spridgets since age 19 (bought a new '60 Bugeye), same wife for 40 (OhMyGod) years, but one child only, now age 40, but who is a lawyer, and who left home a long time ago, having produced three chirrens of her own. You're right about Spridgets - some (many, actually) years ago, I bought a very nice, straight and rust free '67 Midget, 43,ooo miles, for $465. It needed new carpets, but that's all. I've been meaning to post this FWIW, but have forgotten for a few months. My Sprite began a random misfire. Checked all the usual culprits, but couldn't find the problem. I didn't suspect the spark plugs because they were only a few thousand miles old, and they looked perfect - light brown insulators, no visible cracks or tracking. Since nothing else worked, I decided to try new plugs. Advance Auto Parts had Bosch Platinum for $1.79 ea, so I put in a set. Problem solved. "joe blxfstz" 37364... MORE
Just reinstalled the engine in my car this morning, and this worked well: Attach the RH engine mount and bracket to the engine, and the LH engine mount and bracket to the car. Leave all bolts just finger tight until the engine is back in place as you will have to jostle things about. When everything is in place to suit, tighten up all nuts/bolts.
