Sure, Bud... Rates depend upon geographic area and God knows what other criteria. For all I know, Nationwide might just be less expensive than GEICO in my area as well. With my driving record, anyone would like to have me as a client. Of course, tomorrow is anyother day!! :) But my experiences with GEICO people in my area area have been good so I'm not inclined to make a change even if I could save a few bucks. Nationwide (is on YOUR side) Had them many years ago. Had one claim...no problems. The only reason I left is the better rates available at GEICO.....and since the Gekko is driving an LBC (Jag XK140), I'm stayin',,, this little guy is my kind of lizard. Nigel, Looking closely, I think the yellow bodywork in the background is in fact only the rear half of a Frogeye body tub. I dont thin it has anythin Frogeye about it forward of the doors. Guy "Guy Weller" 25307... MORE
My Mk 2 Sprite has not been driven for over 30 years and as I continue the resurrection process I have a concern about the steering mechanism. I would like to flush out the old oil in the rack housing but am unsure about how to go about it. Is there a simple way to open it up and just run new oil through it to flush it or would I have to disassemble it completely? I have parts on hand to replace the front brakes with discs so it would not be challenging to remove the steering completely... MORE
Gerard I think you're right, as it stands it really is beyond economic redemption. However, if it was a Frogeye, it would be worth the 50 quid, just for the registration and v5 and chassis number which you could then transplant onto a rebuilt shell and build one up that way. Cap'n Yes it does look like a Frogeye in the background, perhaps he has got it wrong. My devious mind had assumed tht he was trying to pass off that rusted heap of junk as a Frogeye knowing it to be more valuable, perhaps I was wrong as well. Hi, Nigel.... Hell....I didn't even see it when I first looked...missed it entirely. Don May noticed the "background" BE and so advised all. And you may be wrong....BUT, you just might right...as to which car is really being advertised and sold and as to what the seller may really have in mind in this respect...it's a little confusing! :) Maybe he just hasn't had the chance to get to his mail yet with respect to your's pointing out what appears to be an error...time will tell. Hi guys Spotted this one while browsing ebay.co.uk. After you get over the horror of the picture, you'll realise that this er (how can one put this politely) 'heap of junk' is in fact not Frogeye at all, but one of the later versions. Hands up those of you who'd take this on as a restoration if it was a Frogeye? Cap'n, I would just add that having enough accelleration and top end in a bugeye to outrun the majority of vehicles out there still doesn't make freeway driving enjoyable for me. I've been doing 70 in rush hour traffic a few times, and I don't care for it. I feel like I'm trying to drive through a pinball machine. And here in upstate NY, our rush hour is probably less than off hours traffic in CT and CA. Couple of other observations - Considering the age, relative rarity, and appeal of these cars, you have to realize you're driving... MORE
I just returned from "Fallfest", Moss Motors' show held behind their NJ warehouse. I went as a spectator only as I wimped out on taking my Midget out on a rainy day! Forty or so people did show an LBC (200 last year). need to widen the tunnel by about 1". Easy with a scissor jack. need to cut out the cross member and replace with a similar steel box section immediately below the floor pan, either welded or bolted in place. A quick and easy modification. Guy "Guy Weller" 25232... MORE
Cap'n, This has come up before and the Spit OD will not fit without mods. The conversion I saw widened the Midget tunnel with a bottle jack to fit the OD unit. The conversion also welded in a support piece as I recall. This is one reason I'm reluctant to do this. I have zero welding skills and am somewhat dubious about stretching the drive tunnel that way. Don May!! Pilot bearings are soaked in oil overnight or even longer.....the metal absorbs the oil and the bearing becomes self-lubricating. Thanks for the reply Gerard, It looks like I'm going to go with a contoured to fit airdam from spridgetech.com. I like the looks of the spoiler better but the ones I've been able to find are either generic (not contoured) or they are contoured but are too thin because they were made for racing applications. There is an image of the airdam that I'm leaning towards on the spridgeteck web site (Kendall.jpg an H-production car, #40) but it doesn't do it justice because the owner didn't trim the corners to make it look more appealing, it's also hung... May I disagree. For years I ran my mk2 Sprite with 1275 and 4.2 diff. It was a bit buzzy at 80mph on the motorways but easily bearable. Much of this was hood up to and it's much better with hood down which is I'm sure most of the year where you are. You then have the options of either a 3.9, 3.7 or even 3.5 (Moss now sell them again) to make things even better. 3.5s aren't cheap but they are cheaper than a datsun box and fitting kit. Well said, Don May... You hit the nail on the head..exactly spot on. This is the position I found myself in, more or less. Prior to knowing about the Datsun 5 speed, I attacked "the problem" by moving the whole rpm range upscale to 7-7.5k rpm by "Vizarding" a 1275 and making 4-4.5k rpm a comfortable cruising rpm. Supertuning the motor to take higher rpm is not inexpensive... for it's operating range is just short of a track motor. Weber 45DCOE, bigger valves, prepared head, VP3 cam and 1.5 rollers, big bore LCB and large diameter free-flow exhaust system... MORE

You can anticipate the changes by working it out in terms of percentages. Changing a 4.22 diff with a 3.9 diff is about a16% change. Revs in any gear for a particular road speed will reduce by 16%. Or road speed will increase by 16% for the same revs. In theory (but not in practice) acceleration will be worse by 16% which sounds a lot but is barely noticable. That said, acceleration changes are not quite so straightforward as it depends on how well the gearing is matched to your particular engine torque and power characteristics. And these depend... MORE
IIRC the fraction you refer to is in fact the number of teeth on the pinion/crown. Actually I was gong to ask about diffs any way. I have two for the frogeye (which has a later 1275 motor) the original one which IIRC is 4.55:1 and a riley 1.5 one which is a 3.7:1 diff. What would the effect of fitting the 3.7 diff to the frogeye have, as it stands its will rev straight through the red line and out the other side in top gear, even up hills speed at the red line is 80 ish with... Nigel, Hmmm. 8/39, that would make it a 4.875:1 ratio and a new one on me. I see from the link David J. provided there really is such a thing. As David says, quick acceleration but soon high rev's. Stock Bugeyes and early Spridgets were 4:22, later Spridgets (post 68) were 3.9 and the last Midgets were 3.7. 4.55's were used in Morris Minors and loved by racers. Gerard "gerardchateau" 25140...
