G'day Paul Here's an idea from Oz. If you use too long a bolt in the flywheel, it can stick out the back and hit the half-moon seal above the rear bearing cap. Could be that the problem is marginal, and it's clearing two of them but hitting the third. If this is the problem, the engine needs to come out. But then, I think you have eliminated so many things now that the engine needs to come out anyway. Then you can remove one piece at a time until you find the culprit. And of course, you will... Paul, we all got there in the end, It's usually something simple when you can't figure out the problem. I wish I could have been a bit more precise when relating to the similar (mini) engine build problem I had many years ago. All I could remember was a long bolt fouling on something but couldn't remember where. It wasn't the oil filter bracket though. Oh well. Alls well that ends well. Looking on the bright side, you got your clutch working, you didn't have to drop the sump / remove the head or pull the engine out. SPILLUNG... MORE

Alan... No clue what any of this means. Sounds like "crossed" mail discussions. Fire the ebay email you got to spoof@... and let them be your guide (which I am sure you have already done, anyway!:). Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 27764... MORE

Trevor- Your "random" thoughts are really good. YOU GOT IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! You got me to thinking about the oil filter bracket on the side of the motor. I used new bolts. I pulled the bracket off this morning and the VERY TIP of one bolt showed contact. I knew immediately I had found it. So your thought about "oil" together with the other guys that kept telling me it was a "too big bolt in too small hole" issue solved it. MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!!! Now the final problem. The bolt that showed the hit was the rearmost bolt. If you remember,... MORE

David Jacobs wrote ........if a valve seat does come loose, I would have thought it won't actually drop onto the piston, since the valve head should always be bigger; having said that, if it holds the valve open, it can still cause interference problems. Very true, but I've also heard that if the press fit tolerance isn't correct , the valve seat insert can crack and break in half, not likely ,but a possibility that can easily be detected visually. More likely though is the long bolt in short hole theory. Alan "alan.east-jones" 27752... MORE

Paul, Congrats. It was not a mistake, it was just one of those things that happen and now about 500 of us listers will think about the length of bolts that go into lumps where things are spinning. It was good for all of us. Especially you because it was an easy fix. I don't think you have to worry about any damage. I would just change the oil and filter after perhaps 30 minutes of running just to make sure any metal chips are out of the system. Keep us up on how it starts and runs. Cheers,... MORE

Paul, So you are the one that installed the flywheel and the clutch? Did you use the correct bolts? The use of the improper bolts on the flywheel could cause your problem. If they stick out the rear of the crankshaft they could foul up on the backng plate or possibly on the three bolts that hold on the rear main cap oil slinger. Also by using to long of bolt through your pressure plate into (through) the flywheel the same thing could occur. I'm not sure but I think it could hit the oil pump cover. Sure hope... MORE

Steve- Since the starter is only two bolts, no reason for me not to pull it. I'll put it at the top of the list. Thanks. Paul "dfwip" 27728... MORE

Hi Alan- Been thinking along these lines as well. I fitted up the flywheel, clutch and tranny. Been so long ago I don't remember much. To your knowledge, is bolt size an issue with anything I have installed? Thanks much. Paul "dfwip" 27726... MORE

Hey Everybody I need some help. The guy I bought my Midget from has two AH Sprites and he doesn't know what year they are so Im trying to find out for him. Iv already taken the identification numbers and tried decoding them using the guide on this web site. http://www.mgcars.org.uk/midgetspriteclub/sprite/spriteident.htm I know there Mark IVs but I cant narrow down the year they were made. My Midget has a plate a the door jam that shows the m/y it was made but these darn Sprites have nothing. Is there anywhere in the VIN, engine, or body #s that... MORE

I can't offer any good suggestions but I feel strongly that whatever the problem is it happened after it left Comptune. I had known Dave Tabor since 1963 and he would not send out anything in less than perfect condition. Long before he thought of starting Comptune he helped me work on my Sprite at his house. Through the years we drank a lot of coffee together and he was a wealth of information and help for me. Comptune does still exist but Dave's widow sold it and the new location is in Georgia, I believe. With the many... MORE

"Sounds like you put a long bolt where a short one should go" Boy...this just lit up a bulb. There are two short screws behind the crankshaft timing chain pulley on the front face of the block. If one of thesse screws is a tad too long or is not fully home into the block, it will foul the crankshaft pulley. This may or may not be the source of the problem but just remembered this so thought I would "put it out there" for consideration. Hope you find the culprit, hope it's something simple and easily fixed, and... MORE

Hi, Gerard.... Funny you should mention this for the NY Daily Snooze reports our federal, state and local law enforcement agencies have recently joined foreign law enforcement agencies in Operation Cyber Sweep as they originate a program to finally seriously address (globally) cyberscams. The spoof messages thus far are purported to originate from "security" at AOL, PayPal, Ebay, Citibank and multiple British-based banks wherein the recipients are "warned" of impending "problems" with their accounts unless they "update" (to the contained web address) their credit card/personal financial info. In addition to each one of the above's real "spoof" or "fraud"... MORE

Nigel I will strip and examine the probably get a local rebore shop to do the cra nk and block if required. Rebuilding and head reprofiling I'll probably do myself. I will probably get hardened inserts put in also. Some machining I can probably get done if required by my sub contractor machine shop. I got a bit interested in the bore Vs stroke for 1340cc . I might look into that also. I got machined and rebuilt modified mini and MGBGT engines in the past (bef ore the kids started growing up) but have really only been doing... MORE

Be sure and pull the starter (easy) and check inside with a light and mirror, and listen in the hole for sound. (Long bolt) Chances are that a long bolt would not stop engine at TDC but somewhere in the cycle. (random). Use the broomstick! It can't ;possibly just stop with out making a noise unless someone left a red grease rag in a cylinder. I am taking Vegas odds on the cause. I think if it stops at TDC, it is something in the Cyl, but my vote goes for a long bolt (Non TDC stopping) in a... MORE

Paul, I have been reading this thread with interest. A lot of interesting ideas. Let me think a moment and apply my simple Polish logic. Before you go into motor....... you have marked crank pulley and it always stops in the same place. If you back it up, it stops a few degrees from the same place always? right? Then take it until it stops and check into plug holes and find if any pistons are at or very near TDC. If they are, there could be something in the cylinder that is hitting the piston. If non of... After all this time do you think something has fallen in there? A 1/4" nut or valve cotter would do the trick. Also possibly you have a sticking or bent valve that is hitting the top of a piston. Take the valve cover off and see if the valves and rockers look allright. Look in the spark plug holes. I can have a head off alot faster than a pan and then you could tell if the engine turns over. Happy trails...Rex Urban "Rex Urban" 27701... MORE

anything's possible, but the hassle of using a FWD engine is probably too much :- you can't use the crank, as the Metro has a tail that the flywheel/clutch mounts on, where the Spridget has a flange; the rear main bearing/oil 'seal' area is quite a bit different too (it can be modified to suit, given suitable engineering facilities) the front and rear engine plates are different; I *think* the oil pickup is different because of the Transmission-In-Sump, but I wouldn't swear to this; So basically, there's loads of detail differences that make it a tricky swap and you'd... Forgive me Nigel... For some reason I thought your name was Alan to. The reason why I asked virtually the same question was because I wanted you (or someone else) to elaborate a little more on the modification necessary to install the Frogeye rear end on a Midget. I like your suggestion of using a one piece fiberglass rear. I will most likely go that... MORE

Thanks Alan And thank you Robert B. Houston and Rex Urban for your replies. I will admit. My knowledge of 60s British cars is somewhat limited. I mainly mess with 80s-90s RWD Imports like the MR2, Supra, 240SX, 300ZX, etc.. I dont know why I didnt see that the Silver Sprite was a Frogeye being that the rear end is the only part I like on the Frogeye. I think I need glasses. Anyway... Is it that hard to take the rear panels of a Frogeye and install them on a Spridget? Is it a mater of traditionally replacing... MORE
