Nigel, I am very afraid to post any pix you could see. The car is in three colors of paint plus the original Brookland green. (Seeing what looked best, ya know). I have lowered the front with 1275 springs but not the rear just yet. I'm running American Racing Mags 5.5 inches with 165 x 70 tires. I've cut off the front bumper supports and sold off the rubber bumpers. The interior is new and pretty well sorted out. McGee runs and drives well except for my often mentioned clutch problem. Going through old papers the other day and I ran into a letter from a chap in England that was going to do Sebring Sprite replica panels in fiberglass taken off of molds of an original car. Now this was back in 1989 but I am curious if anything still exsists of this project. The future 200 watts is correct El Capitan. I just had an error in stating that my current setup puts out 20 amps when it should have said 20 watts. As for the future 200 WATTS IT IS but probably in the '69 CGT as to provide a bit more security (locking doors and an alarm system). I like the visual of the Memorex commercial :) It is the set-up I had in 1992 Civic Si prior to having a stupid driver try and shoot through an intersection at the same time as me in 1995. On the 1500 there is an extra piece on the front of the inner wheelarches, that is not there on earlier cars, however it is welded onto the front original 1275 panel rather than done properly and a new panel!, this is then welded to the rear part of the front panel just outboard of the RB mountings. I think I will just bolt it on.. the engine has to go near vertical to get it out because of the normally non removable front panel! and as I still want to fit an overdrive box (if I ever find... Guy Hey! Thats MY cheapo trolley jack! My dad got me that for Christmas one year I think, and it's been so useful. Which alloy castings? The steering rack ones? I just cleaned them up with a wire brush in an angle grinder. The other silver things you can see are the shock absorber bodies that have been painted in silver hammerite. I just recently received a set of Western Minilites. I have lined up the lug nuts, but I have yet to settle on a set of centers. Cap'n Bob has sent me a link to Prestige Wheels, but the centers stand out 2 1/4". I would hope that there may be something a little less obtrusive. I would like to check all my options before I just buy the first centers I see. The Westerns have a 2 3/4" hole in the center. Does anyone else have a set of Westerns that has a center that they would like... MORE
Maplins have a web site (maplin.co.uk) and do mail order from it. The wire is quite thick for the panel lights and shoulds easily take the extra load. When I get to Maplin I will buy a holder and a halogen bulb, and try to modify the existing holder. In the past I have smashed up a bulb and mounted the new holder in the screw bit of the old bulb. Now the old bit screws into the original holder and the new bulb goes into the new holder. Got two problems, not a lot of light and bad... MORE
Stewart What part was spot welded to where? On mine, I just undid all the bolts and off it came - unless things were different on 1500's. I wouldn't worry too much about re-spot welding it in position the bolts are enough to hold it in position. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 29232... MORE
During my restoration of my shell, I had to take this off to repair it, but on the 1500 there are 4 spot-weld holding it onto the inner wheelarch, the rest is bolted onto the radiator mountings and the front chassis members just like any other midget in that respect. Given these spot-weld are already undone is there anything to be gained by welding them back on or can I just drill 4 holes and put bolts in their place? and will this make putting in and taking the engine out any easier? "not up to concours standards" knowing you (as I think I do) it'll certainly be close enough, Nigel. Sometimes when you pour yourself into something like this you get "too close" to the parts to appreciate the beauty of the finished project in total as it will no doubt appear to the interested objective viewer, and most certainly so in the case of the guy who appreciates originality to anywhere near the extent that you do. Tim I am not that familiar with the 1500 cars but I expect the engine will have to come out to replace the clutch and so this is going to cost 300 in most garages, however if money is tight and the engine was running OK before the gasket blew why not just get that fixed (maybe 150 or so). The problem with second hand engines is that they may be no better than the one you have and you are not going to know without removing the head and checking the bores, so it will still cost you... Guy The shims are called anti squeal shims and are listed in the Moss catalogue, I have the shims on my 66 Sprite and the brakes don't squeal. The only problem I have with the shims is that I am never sure which way up to fit them since they have a cut out either at the top or bottom. Get some shims they can't cost much and should solve your problem. I think some people leave the shims out to provide more clearance when fitting the new pads, since they can be a tight fit, however like most... MORE
Nigel... Yes, this is the season for inclement weather ok. No doubt about it. Over here, the coldest January we've had in the Northeast US in 30+ years, with a goodly amount of snow as well. Dave... I could not agree more with you in your opinion of the running "sweetness" of the 1098 motor. My BE came with a 10cc. My prior experience having been limited mainly to street "tuned" (including balancing) 1275's and too a far lesser degree stock 948's, I was immediately struck by the stock 1098's silky smooth running/exhaust note. Not very strong top end but otherwise, performed just fine, most especially in terms of low end for normal street use. I mentioned the apparent smoother running of the 1098 as compared to the 948/1275 several times over the last couple... MORE
I am not familiar with the speedo in your vintage LBC but I had a problem with the odometer reset rod in my 62 Sprite. At about a half inch from the body of the speedo there had been a small screw hole through the rod. This was for a small screw that held a shaft extension. Mine broke at that hole leaving what looks like it might be a screwdriver slot. The rest of the rod was not able to be attached. The far end of it had a small knob that is used to reset the odometer.... MORE
Terry... I agree with Nigel asking you why all this for bulb replacement but I will answer to the extent I can 'cause obviously it's already out of the car!! :):) OK... 1. Yes (O-ring, gasket, rubber washer, bit of silicone, whatever! :) 2. Have not seen an O-ring between instrument and panel before. But I don't see why you could not do this, either. 3. To fix this you are going to have to open up the case and get into the detailed workings. It is pretty delicate stuff in there and parts do wear out. You may prefer to get it to a specialist to recondition. If you do want to sort it yourself you will need to remove the chrome bezel and glass and then undo the two screws on the back of the case. Hello troupe,..I'm looking for a set of Cornercraft Ace Mercury wheel disks (read hubcaps) for my 62 Midget. They were an option on the MG B and the Midget in the early sixties...anybody have any leads?..i'm also looking for a hardtop as well. Tomorrow i'm off to dear Don Mays house to bolt the rebuilt head on and visit his very cute Spridet coversion. if all goes well i'll be driving him home that eve (may car,..not Don.). wish us luck.
