Hi there - A Newbie here. I am wondering - is it possible to fit a 1275cc A series engine block from a Metro into an A.H. Sprite? I assume being an A-Series block it 'should' be possible - but I've head various stories of possible complications. What exactly is involved in performing this transplant? I only ask because a relation has offered me a VERY low mileage Metro (1275cc), with known history for FREE, but I need to act quickly otherwise it will be scrapped!!! Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance, T. W. P.S. I... MORE

Hellow Im new to this list. Two weeks ago I purchased a 73 Midget. It needs quit a bit of body work. Iv heard of Sebring Sprite replica conversions and I would like to go that rout. The problem is this Yankee cant seem to find where to get a decent replica kit here in the states. The only place Iv found that supply a kit is British Speedwell Racing http://www.toyshop-resto.com/britspd/sebring.html but I don't at all like how the back of the kit looks. I would prefer a kit resembling more like the silver Sebring Sprite here... http://www.mgcars.org.uk/midgetspriteclub/surrey/spritegallery3.html If... MORE

Gents, If I may contribute. Have had my engine (1500) in and out several times both with and without gearbox attached. Used the same set up each time. My garage has a steel "I" beam across the top to support the story above. I drilled a hole and mounted a heavy "eye" bolt to the beam. Attached a "come-along" and chain to the engine lift points and ripped it right out. The chain is nice as one can achieve any angle of attack by where the come along is attached to the engine chain. I don't believe a steel... MORE

I have a '61 Sprite with what is probably a desirable UK personal registration number (three letters, three numbers. I am contemplating selling the registration number to fund some needed bodywork restoration works on the car and I was wondering whether anyone else in the group has any experience of this. The number plate means nothing to me but I wouldn't want to lose the style of number plate (silver font on black background) or the letter/number configuration. My understanding is that the DVLC would give a similar style "non-transferable" registration number. I don't want to reduce the value... MORE

I have listened to all the talk of hoisting the engine out of the car using the ceiling joists in the garage. The typical 2x4 ceiling joist on 24" centers gives a 10 pounds per square foot live load and 5 pound per square foot dead load at a max span of 9' 10" for Southern Pine #2. If you have Eastern or Western SPF it is less. The typical garage is wider than 9' 10" so you are working with much less strength if you have a conventionally framed garage. Engineered wood trusses may be damaged doing this... MORE

About 15 years ago I visited my sister living in Malta. After a particularly scary trip in her old Austin mini I chatted with one of the locals in a bar and described the journey. His reply was simple "In France they drive on the right, in England you drive on the Left in Malta we drive in the shade" Alan P.S. Malta had at the time, some of the biggest potholes I'd ever seen. On one trip my sister left the road and drove across a field, joining the road about a mile further on. She explained that... MORE

Ah hm, I cannot let you get away with this....... Why do you Yanks drive on the right?? I am told more countries drive on the left than on the right. Some countries still drive on the crown and have the accidents statistics to match! Anyway I thought a bonnet was a hood and a hood was a top?? hi guys (bloody hell I've got to say and girly's now) I'm confused. Someone please put me out of my state of confusion. Spotted this one ebay (don't ask how or why) http://tinyurl.com/zjbe Can someone please explain to me why this person has got a supposed 'tax exempt' Rubber Bumpered MG BGT ? Let start from some premises shall we. Tax exempt cars are those made before 1st January 1972, and as we all know, Rubber Bumpered cars were not made before 1972. He's saying he used a 1968 'chassis' and put in his 1974 running gear. Ummm but... MORE

Duncan The biggest problem to removing the engine detached from the gearbox (I've decided to stick to British names for car components, If no-one understands me - tough!) is removing the gearbox bolts attaching it to the engine. It's hard enough to remove these with the engine and gearbox out of the car, let alone trying to do it within the confines of an engine bay! It's awkward taking it out with gearbox attached, specially if your front valance and rad are still in position (mine were removed) as it has to come out at a very steep angle... MORE

Duncan Well if I can take mine out complete with transmission with a trolley jack, bunch of bricks and a length of wood, I'm sure you can get your's out with a proper hoist! Personally I think its best to take it out complete with (gearbox) transmission, saves messing about with trying to get the awkward gearbox bolts undone with it still in position. Mine came out fairly easily once the bolts were all removed from the transmission tunnel. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 27564... MORE

when you pull just the engine by itself, you have to lift it slightly before you can move it forwards, so that the front pulley clears the cross member (assuming you have an A series engined car, not a 1500 - the cross member is different) However, the top of the gearbox comes up against the heater ducting below the battery tray, so you have to lift a bit and pull a bit repeatedly and gradually work the thing past all the obstructions. If you pull the engine and 'box together, it's slightly easier from this respect, but you... MORE

Roger Yes I have 2kw fan heater in the garage I mostly use for drying the car off after rubbing it down, although I don't like using it because it just stirs dust into the air, which then conveniently lands on my fresh paint! Yes it should look good, specially considering its had a bare metal respray, which seriously added to the amount of work involved! Roger, the prep took forever, seriously its taken me months to get the bodywork to the stage of even being ready for topcoat. People just don't have a clue how much work is... MORE

When forced to spray at this time of year in the past, I heated the car and the garage by using a fan heater, which I turned off before spraying. Must have cost a few bob in electricity, but it seemed to just about eliminate the bloom. After all the effort you have put in, the car should look absolutely fantastic. Quite envious really, as I am still in the preparation stages! Like you I am never going to undertake anything like this ever again, not ever .... until next time perhaps.:-) "Roger Stinson" 27519... G'day Don Slipping clutch could be a sign of worn clutch disk, or insufficent clamping pressure, or both. In my humble opinion, the only people who don't change everything (see below) are those who get their jollies from removing and replacing engines. Everything means: driven plate (disc) pressure plate release bearing bronze bush and bolt at the pivot point of the clutch releases bearing fork crankshaft spigot bush Do it right and you get to do it just once. avagoodday Colin "Colin@SpriteParts" 27508... Don First make sure that your release bearing is not being held on, leaving the clutch partially disengaged. This could be a sticky throw out arm or a problem in the slave / master cyl inder. Usually the problem is found at the clutch end. If its not this then the driven plate friction material could have worn too thin OR it has over heated due to slipping - this will result in a shiny glazed finish of the friction material. Will work ok until the engine torque required to move the vehicle (accelerating /going up hill, or with... MORE
