Basil, owner/creator/administrator of the British Car Forum, http://www.britishcarforum.com/ , has created a new forum just for spridgets. Previously the spridget people had to use either the Austin Healey or MG forums, now we have our own to use. If you haven't visited BCF before now's a good time to check it out. You might try going through the group archives, Pete. A while back there was a bit of discussion about having the master cylinder resleeved. That has got to be a lot better priced than buying a new unit. I can remember the name of the place that was said to be avoided but I couldn't locate quickly the place that was recommended. Good luck, Nelson in Medina, Ohio Mk 2 Sprite pieces "Nelson Wittstock" 26419... MORE

funny amount of positive camber. I did this at an event one time many many years ago. I had help from a friend who should have also known better. We both were on the receiving end of lots of jibes and laughs from all the other club members who witnessed our folly!!! You can check: http://www.ahsdc.org/goblins/tech/frontend.htm for some diagnostics courtesy of the late Bob Gill and Gillspeed. If you don't find anything seriously wrong, then it is time to inspect the engine bay for signs of a smack on the front left side. (substitute front right side in case... MORE

Just thought I'd introduce myself as I am new to the list. I recently began the restoration of a 61 Midget. The outer panels are excellent with rust free fenders, hood and trunk lid. That's the good news. The bad news is the floor and sills. The sills aren't terrible but the floor is almost non-existent. I'm going to be replacing the rear spring mounts etc. as well. The car was canabalised a bit so a few parts are missing. Ebay has been helpful for those. I may make pleas to the list for parts on occassion. I'll be... MORE

My book says you are looking at a 3.9 with a 1500. Watch ebay and pick one up for $90-$100. Bob, Portland, OR "Robert Webb" 26412... MORE

Hello Jack Thank you for your advice I will check this when the weather allows me to. I have to do it outside my garage, but for the moment it is pouring down in Norway... Jan Erik "jmaalen" 26392... MORE

If what Mike says checks out and the diff looks okay, check the transmission/motor mounts. I had a similar sound and I guess the body carried or amplified the sound of the drive-train flexing because after I replaced the mounts, the sound stopped. Jack Texas "austinbud2002" 26390... MORE

Nigel, The second "Oct 69" is probably a misprint for "Jun 70" - if you look at his table on P112, that agrees with Anders Clausager's (official BMIHT archivist) chassis number/dates table in his "Sprites and Midgets - The Complete Story". There are some deliberate gaps in the sequence so new models could start at **501. Regards David PS You don't make clear whether your chassis no.86697 is a Sprite or Midget - Midget chassis numbers overlapped Sprite ones around this time; I know you've mentioned it before, but speaking as a fellow pedant, you need to be more... I percieve, Bob. We had gotten reports here on the East Coast that two guys were seen spreading some sort of accelerant around before lighting a fire....obviously, not the case, thank God. Seems to be a case of everyone else at the other fire, when the "other" fire (in your area) got out of hand due to a "coincident" wind coming up compounded with yet, a Santa Anna wind event...bad timing, bad circumstances. Bad news in any case, of course. At least I hear they are getting it under control.... bad one. Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 26388... MORE

"Now back to LBC content" Not so fast big guy!! First of all, glad you and abode have been spared. Second...what about those two guys who are suspected of setting this fire? Heard anything about this locally? Cap'n. Bob '60 :{) PilotRob@... 26385... MORE

I just acquired some sheet Lexan and would like to use it to replace the old plastic window panes on my MK 2 Sprite. Does anyone have any recommendations for the type of adhesive to use (or to not use) to attach the handles onto the sliding sections? I'm currently thinking about using super glue but will do a test first unless I am informed that this is a no-no. Nelson "witstock7" 26379... MORE

To all my friends, many of which have inquired about the fires here in San Diego, it is devistating!!! Box score, approx 350,000 acres burned, about 1,400 homes burned to the ground, 900 out buildings burned down, 14 people dead, still evacuating towns on Wed night. The fire burned within 3 miles of my house. No real danger but lots of smoke and ash and bad air. No postal delivery on Monday, all schools still closed and no containment yet. Perhaps not until Monday. An unbelievable time for all of us in Southern California. Thank you all for your... MORE

Hi guys Was just checking something in the 'bible' and I noticed something strange. I think Terry Horler's made a mistake somewhere. On page 116 under Sprite MKIV and Midget MKIII Production Changes it says - GAN5-77803 (October 1969) GAN5-89501 (October 1969) Big gap in chassis numbers there . . . GAN5-89515 (Jul 970) GAN5-96273 (Dec 1970) Is he saying that 14 cars were built between October 1969 and July 1970? My car was chassis number 86697 and reckoned to have been built between May and June 1970. Me thinks Terry Horlers got his chassis numbers and dates way... MORE

According to Horler's bible, Jaeger instruments were fitted to Mk 1 Midgets only, the equivalent Sprite Mk 2 having equivalent Smiths gauges, see Page 58. As far as I can recall Jaeger Gauges were badge engineered Smiths Gauges and were in fact made by Smiths in Cheltenham...like.... flame suit donned.... the Midget was a badge engineered Sprite! Bob, Well... You're right what skews my thinking is that many years ago I had a worn timing chain that was so bad the headers would glow red as the engine speed increased. BTW the chain is new duplex with vernier gears. In order to get it to idle 900-1000 I had to retard the timing (rotate the dizzy ccw). The idle screws would have no effect on the speed unless I did that. Does this mean I got some leaks around the carb shafts? I'm going to go back and static time the ignition and see where it's... I know this is basic but maybe it will save someone else a lot of frustration. The previous owner of my car had installed a Pertronix distributor conversion on my 1963 1098cc Sprite. No other modifications; no new wires, coil or plugs. Since I drive this car to work every day, I decided to replace all of the basic electrical components; relay, fuse box, spark plug wires etc. I also decided to replace the Pertronix unit with a new one AND their coil. Having accomplished all of that, the car ran hot, stumbled until it got warmed up and... MORE

Terry I depend's on how much you want an 'original' workshop manual. The price does seem high to me. You can pick up a 'haynes' workshop manual for the MGB on ebay.co.uk for around a fiver. You pays ya money, ya takes ya choice. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 26313... MORE

"...all you can do is steer them in the right direction...." LOL......priceless, Nigel!! I recall when I could not get the toe to stay put on my '74 Midget when I first acquired it. After replacing tie rod ends, bearings, etc., I finally just broke down and replaced the whole suspension with new parts. And prior to this, it WAS "stiff" and while it became less stiff with much grease, it then became loose due to worn clearances, even as it became less stiff as we continued to grease it often. So diplomacy aside, it can be just as... MORE

Rod... Nigel may be right (probably is because his reasons are sound) but, go the "inexpensive" Cap'n Bob's suggestion first because grease in the steering rack will cause the same symptoms of heavy steering and an unwillingness to self- center and it's a lot less expensive fix, in the event!! :):) There is nothing "wrong" with the front end suspension set-up other than it's rather "crude" but Nigel is absolutely correct in that premature wear is caused mainly by a lack of proper maintenance as in not following factory recommended lubrication schedules. And yes, the king pins (and everything... MORE

Well, Alan (good morning, BTW!)... The VP3 would be "more" of a cam in the smaller rather than larger bore engines. The shorter the stroke, the more "square" the engine, the more "revability", all else equal (BIG caveat.. the latter!:). So, the long bore stock 1098 wouldn't be a "revver" but man, it has got to be one of the smoothest of all Series A varients with it's "silky" exhaust note. Martyn's 1098 is "built" though. Friend of mine owns an XK140....huge Jaeger gauges....a good 4.5" I believe for tach and/or speedo. Good point on the red lights...which is... MORE
