It is kind of sad to see someone out of ignorance paying exorbitant prices for something readily available in their local hardware store... Case in point. On ebay at the moment are a set of four plugs to fill the head of a Midget after removing the Air Pump and Rail. There are 5 bids and the current price is at $20.50. The four plugs are: Standard 1/4" brass flare plugs available at Orchard Supply or any ACE hardware store for less than 50 cents each. I have used them on my 74 when I removed the smog air... MORE
Chuck: Many years ago (about 1967 I think) I had a bugeye and wanted a forward tilting front end. I simply removed the hinges and swaung the unit up and forward on the latching bar that engages the holes in the frame. I think I had to remove the front bumper. I didn't use any latch downs for the unt. The weight held it in place. Probably not acceptable in these lawyer happy days but did just fine in the good old days! the latch question cropped up about 5 minutes before you joined the group! A neater, unobtrusive alternative to the Spitfire latches is to use Dzus fasteners (1/4 turn 'buttons') Regards David "David Jacobs" 29475... MORE
Having now extracted the engine from the car I have found its Engine number, whihc is FP4615F, I think this is a proper midget engine. But its defieantly a pinky metalic red. Dad says that this colour indicates a factory recon unit, I thought these were Gold, but aparently that's austin engines, truimph painted thier recon motors a pinky metalic red.I might re-paint it black Stewart "Ford Prefect" 29472... there are 'L' shaped steel brackets in the corners of the windscreen, so you are slightly less likely to mess up these tapped holes than if they were in the aluminium. However, these brackets are themselves screwed to tapped holes in the uprights, so if you do mess up the steel 'L's, you'll probably still have to get the screws out of the aluminium parts to salvage it all. Hello I have buy a Sprite mkII, I have troble with the clutch, there was a new clutch kit 10CC64-6, part no. GCK260, Borg & Beck part no. 50803, but it is not the rigt for the flywheel, there is another clutch i don't now the part number but it is smaller I have try it but it is not good, can I use the new clutch with another flywheel and is there anybody who know the part no. and where I can get it. Nigel, I had exactly the same problem with the bumper mount and I still have not decided weather to make or buy new tubes as I have no seen them in Moss etc . Can you tell me if you made them or where you got them please. Hmm, I haven't yet tried to put mine on, but I'm sitting here with the chrome and clips in front of me. First thing I notice is that the lips on the back of the trim are of different sizes. Jim- Do not take my comments as anything other than a personal opinion based on my research. I did talk with a couple people who have converted their Rivergate set-up to "all Datsun" components, but also contacted several who were delighted with the set-up, as is. EVERYONE with the Rivergate was pleased. I honestly don't think you can go wrong with either one. I actually like Rivergates crank seal the best, and may well have gone the Rivergate route if delivery was not an issue. Trevor Thanks for that explanation, it's kind of what I expected it to be, and as =3D=0D you say regarding the down sides, it's exactly why I don't like using them. There's been very few nuts/bolts/screws I havent been able to remove using =3D=0D heat and brute strength, but I guess heat is not really an option on the windscreen frame - further fuelling my concern. Theres only been a couple that have beaten me and caused problems. The first was on the long bolt on the axle casing that retains the rebound stra =3D=0D ps - that one... MORE

They look EXACTLY the same as the vinyl ones, only they're made out =3D=0D of connolly leather hide, and I paid only a little more for them on ebay t =3D=0D han I would have had to have paid for a pair of vinyl ones - so I decided to indu =3D=0D lge a little! The only way you can tell the difference is when you sit in them an =3D=0D d smell that lovely whiff of leather ;) The MGOC want somewhere around =A3250-350 for a set of connolly leather hide ones! Paul It's not the 'putting back together' bit that concerns me, it's the 'taking =3D=0D apart' bit. Knowing my car (and my luck) the screws holding the frame together will be =3D=0D seized solid - getting them out succesfully is walking a tightrope between =3D=0D success and scrapping the windscreen frame. Bob- I can't wait. Have the engine out already! Talked with Rivergate, and due to moving into their new shop, was advised they were just now filling November orders. It would be several months wait. Given that I am at the end of a ten year project, I want the car running the first day it gets above freezing in Ohio (which will probably be mid July). I had also heard that the Riverside clutch set-up could be an occasional problem. Apparently they use the MG pressure plate but a Toyota throw-out bearing. Not sure of the disc. Paul... MORE
I replaced my own windshield....successfully. Tried to get someone local to do it, and none of the glass places would touch the job. With a little planning, it really is an "at home" job. My brother and I did it while watching the Browns lose (again). First, order all new screws....you'll need them. Have some sharp drill bits and easy outs....you'll need them. After you get the old frame apart, spend some quality time polishing it....it'll need it. Put a new seal around the new glass and lightly soap the exterior edge of the seal. Have your helper pull... I've only put about 500 miles on my Rivergate conversion. I initally had questions about the custom clutch. I thought the trowout bearing was a datsun part? Anyway... I was concerned about being able to replace the clutch should rivergate not be in existence when the time came. However, I talked to my local transmission shop, and they said it would be no problem to fabricate. I plan on putting some serious miles on the Midget this summer. Ask me again at the end of the year how it is going. Otherwise I am happy with the clutch performance.... MORE
Easy-outs are tools used to extract a bolt that has sheared. You drill a hole down into the bolt, tap the easy out down into the hole, then carefull y turn the easy-out and bolt back out. In reality, what often happens, is th e easy-out continues to enlarge the drilled hole and never really bites enough. Or, worse: the easy-out breaks and then you have something 10 time s harder than the original bolt to try and remove. Hi just found your group.I am restoring a 59 bugeye and would like to know the best way to tilt the hood foreward.MiniMania has a hinge kit for $160 yikes!seems like a lot for a couple pieces of metal and a bolt or two.also whats the best way to latch it? If you get past the seized screws holding the frame together (this one usually sorts the boys from the girls) and manage to replace the glass you'll have mucho fun getting it back together - few tips for you - washing up liquid, long bits of rope and some stout bits of timber! Mike Having recently replaced my MIDGET lettering I should know this but can't remember! I think it's 4.5 inches from the left hand edge of the sill (or right hand edge on the other side) to the edge of the first letter and 1.5 inches up from the bottom of the sill (bottom of the visible part of the sill, not from the indented part right at the bottom) to the bottom of the letter. I'm assuming you're going to put MIDGET letters on it if it's a 74 Midget, but hey, it's your car, put the SPRITE badge... MORE
awful-o!! Yes, David, they were. :) Used to think good sheepskin seat covers were an overpriced deal. Well.. I was wrong. I have had mine for about 20 years now (no kidding) and they are still going strong with minor repairs carried out by a local tailor from time to time. He also cut them down from Spridget length to Bugeye length when I "went back to basics:! :) No slipping into the footwell :):) and warm in the winter, cool in the summer. They remove easily for brushout and were a well worth while investment in comfort for... MORE
