Yep...kits for these were around back when these cars first came upon the scene, David. A fellow lister sent me a photo of a page out of either Car & Driver or Road & Track from the early 60's. The "kit" ran about US$60 back in the days when a fibreglass bonnet ran about US$150. Of course, back then a FULL Judson kit for the Sprite ran less than US$200.00!! :):) Cap'n. Esteemed Listers, Although of late I have been lurking, I am out of my hole and asking a rather silly (stupid? moronic?) question. Which way does one turn a mixture control nut on an SU to enrich the mixture? I am having my first go-'round with these exotic carbs and getting anything other than garbage out of the motor has been beyond me thus far. The mixture question would help. Hi In the process of rebuilding a tandem (dual) MC from early Sprite. Noticed that the pistons in these were painted/coated in black. It is wearing away on mine, some of it is fine while some is gone. I was just going to steel wool polish them smooth. What were these painted with? something not affected by hydraulic fluid. I joined this group because I just got a 1977 Midget that to my supprise started after sitting in a pasture for 6 years. I fitted new tires and filled up the brake and clutch with fluid and I am on the road. There are a few pieces missing though...Like tail lights, mirrors, headlight bezels, air filter, and wiper switch. There are some of these items on ebay but the are for a 1977 MGB. G'day all Some of you may recall that I own a round wheel arch Austin Sprite - AAN10/87699G. It's a bit rough around the edges, but ius mechanically sound. One day it will get its turn to be prettified. And amongst other things, it will need new grille and boot (trunk to the Yanks) badges. I asked on this site about a year ago if anyone knew where I could buy these - no-one did. It seems that Moss Motors and AH Spares don't even acknowledge them in the catalogues. Brad 'veering off the true and righteous path'? I never set out to create a concours car, but I did set out to put my car back to as original condition as I could. Originality is important to me, not for concours reasons, but because I never had a chance to buy one of these cars new, and now's my chance to have an 'as new car, as the makers intended it to be'. Guys I will be hosting the Midget & Sprite club stand at the BMC Rally on Sunday (1st August). The Rally attracts hundreds of British Motor Corporation built cars of all types including Spridgets as well as a variety of stalls and autojumble (some real bargains last year) all set in an area of lakes and meadows connected to Peterborough by a steam railway, with a battle of Britain flight flypast thrown in for good measure. Jens I spoke to Burlen this morning as I mentioned and they were very helpful. I've ordered up two spindle kits, two rubber washers and two new AN needles from them. For interest and reference for others going down this route in the future the cost of drilling out the spindle holes in the carb body and putting in inserts for the new spindle is about =A320 GBP + VAT. The new spindle kit (comes with butterfly screws and gaskets) was =A36.87 GBP + VAT and the AN needle =A36.33 + VAT. The moral behind this is to avoid... MORE

G'day again Hammondale If they are new reproduction parts, then there is no surprise that they aren't made correctly. You would think that, if you were reproducing something, it would be just as easy to get it right as to get it wrong. Sadly this is seldom the case - most repro stuff isn't quite right.(I can hear Ed nodding in agreement right now.) But if you have only .006" play at the edge of the rotor, that is very little and not enough (in my opinion) to be concerned about short term. I would however feel/measure the play... MORE
brought the frogeye back to life tonight. First time it has started in the last year or so, but for the last 4 years it has only really run once a year to move to a new resting place. However this time it was a bit reluctant to start, and I found no spark so ran a hot wire from the fuse box to the +ve terminal of the coil and it fired up easily then. Interestingly when attempting to rev the engine it really did not want to know, and coughed and spluttered instead, this got better when... MORE
Trevor The needles are fixed not sprung, but I take your point on replacing them - I'm replacing them as a matter of course anyway. G'day Hammondale The recommended torque is 45 ft lbs, then to the next split pin hole. The slight play is most likely due to the hub being worn. As a consequence, the outer bearing races are close together than they should be and the inner races aren't seating properly on the ramps in the inner races. Got that? So why aren't they seating when you tighten the nut? Because the cast iron spacer is holding them apart. The solution is to machine a little off the spacer. You can use a lathe if one is avaailable, or a linisher,... MORE

Hi all, Is there a recommended torque setting for tightening down the nut on a front spindle to hold the disk brake rotor on? I have the old Brit Leyland ring-bound Spridget shop manual (circa 1970) and there's no torque spec in there. How tight is adequate, and how tight is too tight, i.e. shortening bearing life(?) or some other problem(?) Some background info for anyone patient enough to read - I've got the Frontline larger disc brakes installed, with all new wheel bearings, and yes, the bearing thrust orientations are correct. Nigel, I don't remember what your car is, But FWIW... I had a similar problem with my Bugeye, My car came disassembled and the fuel tank fiting was not included. By trial and leak, I found that (USA terms) a standard tubing thread, copper compression fitting works. V.B. says that the same fits 65-74, and that the same pipe nut also fits 75-79, so I would assume that this should work in your car. I used copper tubbing from gas tank to carbs, (1 1/2" :() ), which is not stock, but is easier to bend and doesn't rust.... MORE
