Hi all,1275cc sprite speedo works fine up to 40mph then from there flys round to the 100mph mark and flickers,what do you think the problem is, need a new speedo ? the cable is brand new and the drive in the box seems ok,also the cable seems to have a nice curve on it and is not kinked. regards wes "wesley5060" 32491... Guys... Aldon (UK) has about every Series A engine tune ever thought up for these motors...in their computers. Their computers know more or less exactly what advance curve will go with your state of tune. It may not be spot on, but it'll be awfully damn close! Bearing in mind this will be a more or less once in a lifetime expense, you might want to email them and see what they can do for you? "Generic" Aldons ("Reds" or "Yellows") are probably what Moss (and others) are carrying and selling in terms of a "generic" curve fors both... MORE
Well, I watched the show, "Car Search", on the Speed Channel, and it was very interesting. FYI, the show is about a group of people who have been given some money to buy a collector car each week and take it to the Barrett Jackson Classic Car Auction to see if they can buy low enough and sell high enough to make some money in the end. I have an air impact wrench but I don't have a socket that is 1 & 7/8 inches to fit over the nut and didn't care to lay out $20 to buy one. Hi guys Whilst clearing through some of my 'stuff' to do with the car, I've come across this. It's a NOS Lucas Electronic Ignition Model 45DM Distributor and AB14 Amplifier, which I beleive is a straight swop for the 45D dizzy as used in the 1500's. It's new old stock - never been used and comes with all the bits and fitting instructions. I'm probably going to sling it on ebay, as it's no good to me or my 1275. Well, I thought I had a local buyer for my Sprite, but it seems to not have worked out. I thought I would check the list and see if I can get an opinion on what it might be worth. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. The bearing nut yielded to a pipe wrench with an 18 inch pipe handle extension. So much for the left side. Now its back to the right side and an uncooperative brake drum. One of the retaining screws came out easily but the second one has thus far resisted my efforts. In the process of removing the rear axle I've run into a bit of a frustration. It looks like it will be necessary to remove the backing plate for the brakes in order to remove the axle fastening for the quarter elliptical spring on my Mk 2 Sprite. After removing the brakes I am unable to turn the large nut holding the bearing in place. Working on the left side I know it will have to be turned clockwise but after flattening the locking washer I am still unable to budge it. Will it be necessary to buy a... MORE
Measure the battery voltage, with an alternator it should be 14.7 volts (about) at fast tickover with no lights, heater etc on. You can buy a digital multimeter for 5 in our loacl market or maplins. Invaluable. Sounds like a dead alternator to me. Incidently the light only shows that there is a vlotage on the field winding of the alternator (self generating) not that it is actually charging. I have had one and only one instance where the field voltage was being generated but the alternator was not charging. The multimeter sorted it out. Tery "terry.isherwood" 32424... MORE

My 79 just started this weird thing: when starting up, the red light comes on and stays on for approx. one minute. Revving the engine slightly makes it glow brighter. The altenator belt is adjusted properly, the connections all seem clean and tight, and it's a six month old Diehard, so I don't think it's the battery. Any of you good folks have any ideas? Is this harmful? It runs perfectly, lights, heater, wipers, all function normally, but it's never done this before... Thanks, George "chuibuddy" 32420... MORE
Using a cold chisel with a stout hammer (BFH) on the nut works. Just a tad messy appearing, but it works. Keep in mind the left side has left handed threads. Right side is conventional. Use the same method to tighten. Pliers won't do it. Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 32435... MORE

The lack of door handles sounds right, but the biggest and most definitive mark of a Mk1 midget is the rear suspension, and its also the main cause of death (to the car!) if it's a mk1 midget it will have quarter elliptic springs not semi ecliptics like later sprites/midgets. I also suspect the MkII MG and MkIII AH had an electric rev counter, which the Mk1/II did not, this is a mechanical device driven off the back of the dynamo from a reduction device. Thanks to all for the comments on the tire replacement. I'd like to go with a slightly wider tire just to fill in the wells a little and now that I know that they shouldn't cause a problem. I thought we were so close to finishing the car up this weekend and preparing to haul it home. All we wanted to do was simply replace the rear springs. But, as the karma has been with this one, the task turned out not so simple. We ended up having to break the bolt in the front bracket of each side... MORE
1972 chrome bumper Still working on my badge bar. Found I had to bolt the bumper on then fit the badge bar using another bumper fixing nut to hold it on. As regards the repro spot lights and the MGOC fixing brackets I had to make reducing sleeves so the spotlight fixing nuts did not go through the much too large fixing hole. David, I think you stated it backwards. Typically the disc has a slightly offset hub with the springs protruding away from the center line. Those springs are what might interfere with the flywheel bolts, so they should be tucked into the clutch cover. Usually, if you put the plate up to the flywheel wrong side to it, the springs will contact the bolts. Just flip it over then. Best, Paul A "Paul Asgeirsson" 32399... MORE

The top dynamic menu didn't work well in with Firefox 0.8, and was still messed up in IE6 until I canged my font size. You may want to do something static until you can resolve some of those issues. I like the idea of a site dedicated to collecting resources for the sprite, but I question trying to launch another forum. I would instead like to see a list of existing forums and mailing lists. I use this mailing list, the autox.team.net mailing list, the britishcarforum, and the mgbbs. I'm not sure there would be support for another forum,... MORE

How do you get that #@#**# key back into the fulcrum pin? I tighted the bolt backed it up until I could feel the key slip into the slot. It locks everything it place nicely, but the thread part doesn't show up at the other end so I can put the nut ont. I've grease the key, frozen the key,lubed it, no luck. And when you hammer the sh*t out of it, it pens, and distorts. Is it OK to grind it down a little bit to make it fit? thanks, Bruce "redrider417" 32368... MORE
It's part of the bolt-on filter head. The only one I have ever seen is on the canister type, not the spin-on. I have an engine from a '69 Midget and it was standard equipped with the cannister type. The sensor is not present, so it must have been done away with by the time the spin-on type was implemented.
