Hi I have noticed for quite awhile the faint smell of coolant while the engine is running. No dripping or smoke from the block. More like that "pissing" thing they do. In the process of changing the carbs and now have a clear view of the teltale rust trail coming from the front side of the head (manifold side). should I?? Crack all the head bolts a 1/2 turn then retourque everthing Just retorque now,possibly finding a loose head bolt in that area. I will probably end up having to do the new gasket but thought it may be... MORE
Unless you have an aversion to removing the water pump, I'd just go ahead and replace the head gasket at this point, based on my experience with "quick fixes" in this area. The hard part is already done - removing the carbs & manifold. An oil change is always healthy. However, if you do want to try the re-torquing bit, from what i have read/heard, you should do one bolt at a time - loosen and retorque - in a specific order (as listed in Haynes & Bentley manuals). How do you lube the steering on a 60 bugeye. There is a zirc fitting and the book says to use 140 weight gear oil. I went to the car parts store and couldn't find a tool to inject the oil into the fitting. Any ideas? Thanks Bob Irwin rlirwn@... 36732... MORE

Vince....I may be mis-understanding your terms, but here goes..... Off hand, it sounds like the front carb is "weak" while the rear carb is "correct" or maybe a little rich. Don't forget, these are "interdependent" considering they're "connected" by a "balance" tube. Therefore it is possible for one carb to run the whole show....IOW, one "weak" and one maybe "overly" rich. For BOTH carbs..... the result with proper mixture should be a slight initial rise in rpm (50 or so) followed by a return to the prior i dle speed as the air valve is "held" less than 1/8"... MORE

The MG died because there wasn't the money to modernize it, so they tried to patch up a twenty year old design (the running gear was 30+ years old) and noboby wanted them. As far as "not that we are bigger" - Well, speak for yourself. My Sprite has shrunk three sizes in the last 45 years. Must not have been sanforized and left out in the rain too often. I don't quite agree with you on that. The British car club I belong to (www.sbmoc.com) is very active, and we have enthusiastic members ranging in age from nearly 90 down to several teenagers. The youngsters are fascinated by cars which they can actually understand and work on themselves, and they think they're way cooler than new Japanese stuff. Ginny, 40 year motorcycle man here.... over 200K miles on bikes. Depending upon the bike, your windshield can be either Lexan of Plexi. If it is the cheaper Plexi it will become cloudy (a white-ish haze) and eventually it will begin to show stress fractures. Lexan doesn't do that. Sounds like you have Plexi in which case, there is nothing you can do about the cloudiness because it is inside the Plexi and won't polish out. Strong sunshine is the culprit. Novus and the other plasitic polishes work fine to a point. You will need to know if there... MORE
The 'A' origianlly denoted an engine of under 1200 cc, Whch till the introdution of the 1275 was what the midget/Sprite had, however, this was never changed, so effetivly GAN means an MG midget, HAN means Austin Healey and nothing more. nearly right - if the '6' had followed an H at the beginning, it would have been the 6th series Austin-Healey, but since it follows a G, it's the 6th series of MG Midget, i.e. the 1500 rubber bumper model. Also, although the G does mean MG, it doesn't specifically mean assembled at Abingdon - could have been Cowley. What you have as a 6 at the end is really a G, which *does* indicate Abingdon - confusing, eh?! HTH David "David Jacobs" 36593... MORE

Sprites started with HAN, Midgets with GAN. My Mk1 midget was a GAN1, my Mk3 midget is GAN3. Y can contact the British Motor Industry Herirage Trust, who will provide you with all the information you want. If it is the 215 ci all alloy Buick V8 then you can get MG badged rocker covers and twin SUs for it!, it is the exact same engine that became the Rover 3.5 litre V8 and powers most range rovers and the MGB GTV8 hence Moss will sell you some rocker covers with MG cast in them that will bolt striaght on the engine. Although 200BHP stock is proabbly Gross rating, not the modern DIN, probbly more like 150 if you want to use the modern ratings. Even the Twin Plemumn SD1 Rover Vitesse only had 220BHP DIN!... MORE

I have saved many of the messages of this group in folders. I figure these categorized files will be very helpful as I continue my Sprite restoration. Not trusting the computer to be crash-proof, I would like to backup these files to a CD. I cannot figure any way to get Outlook Express to allow me to do this.
