Midget/Sprite-o-files, In the process of getting the Midget back on the road after the looooong winter (will it ever get warm around here? (MA)) I think I will finally install a top.....I've lost 35 lbs, so now I think I could actually get in and out of the car with the top up! I've not had one on the car for 4 years! Besides, as all of you know, these cars should not have hats! But, in the event of rain, I would have some protection....so..... I don't quite know what I was drinking when I though about this, but I apparently own a 1973 MGB with Wire Wheels and Overdrive in a little rough shape body wise. Mechanically, I guess it's sound. I tried to post this earlier today from work, but I think it got lost in cybersomewhere.... Still looking at alternatives for my'69 Sprite, with bad trans. Maybe adding a bit more horsepower in the process of fixing the transmission. I have found some sites with Toyota engine and trans combo swaps, and a few Datsun engine and trans swaps. Of course, the most common dats 5 speed trans, using spridget engine and rear end. I also saw giant engine transplants, big honkin V8's and some V6's with variable combinations. Ken, When you are measuring the end float on the cam are you doing it with the cam drive gear torque to spec? Without the gear in place, yes you will have plenty of end float. The cam drive gear pulls the cam forward towards the triangular plate. Hi all, I picked up a 1275 (73 Midget) engine for my Morris Minor project car. Since it arrived in four boxes a few parts were missing (so I've discovered) One of these was the small triangular(ish) drive flange which connects the camshaft to the oil pump. A new oil pump and flange were obtained (along with loads of other stuff for a complete rebuild). After assembling the oil pump, camshaft and the triangular camshaft retaining plate I find I have about 1/8" or so of endfloat where the spec is 4 to 7 thou! The retaining plate is... MORE
Your plans pretty much match up with what I am doing, Rick. I have the engine compartment pretty well taken care of as well as the front wheel wells. I used POR 15 on the compartment and the various metal shrouds and brackets. It is supposed to be very tough and it has a nice shine to it. Since my color is black the color match is not a concern. Absolutely Don May... We're all on "borrowed time" in any event and those that realize this have a marked tendency to live at least as much or moreso for today, rather than the morrow. Eventually, we all run out of time (our most precious commodity, IMHO) and age may or may not be a factor for sure. I was considering dipping my Sprite until I asked about it at the local Healey club meeting. The info that I was told was that it does a good job of cleaning up the crud but some of the guys had trouble with the dipping solution coming out at the seams later and messing up the paint job. Chris Mine only has one horn - it was standard OE for one to be fitted, I think two was an option on your car. If you want to know if it's a high or low note you'll have to look at it physically - it should have an H or L stamped on the body. I'll take a look at mine when I can find it and let you know. Welcome to the list Paul. How long is it going to take? How long is a piece of string? They (being they, I mean people who have been down this path before) reckon that a ground up nut and bolt rebuild of any classic car will take around about 2,000 manhours of work. I'll save you the calculation of that into real terms - its about 5 years of part time (by part time I mean every weekend and evening) work. Thanx for all your input I'm really no wiser , Wires look the bizz on a show car. And didn't a spoke key come with the original tool set? Chrome wires are just too showy IMHO but probably easier to clean. I'll probably put them (painted)on the Frogeye as I guess I'll be putting more hard miles on the midget. I haven't found a definitive answer yet if painted wire wheels were an original option on the UK AH M1 Sprite It's all reversable though isn't it. Alan "Alan" 31063... MORE
Chris One of the favourite add ons inthe 6's and 70's was the air horn (FIAMME) Very loud and individual. I guess some where like Halfords still sell them. Easy to install, read the instructions. (I still want the multitone set that palys LA KOOKARACHA, although illegal on British roads as multitone horns are for emergency vehical use only, Oh and diesel locomotives ) The tone on some electric diaphragm horns can be altered by screwing a little adusting screw on the back of the horn, right in the centre. Not sure which horn model you're talking about, but the early Bugeye horns had either an H or an L inside the bell lip. Look closely under the pealing paint and bugs, you might see it. Pa "Paul Asgeirsson" 31077... MORE
