Don May states...."not in our blood to be Puritans" For sure! A stock Bugeye would be unsafe considering the daily NYC metropolitan traffic in my area.....really! As gorgeous as the stock BE was in it's stock factory form, as a daily driver in my area it would just get in everyone else's way at this point. Unfortunate....but true. Cap'n. Guys... Muhahmed Abacha (no doubt a cousin of our old "Nigerian George" of used car buying fame) is looking for someone to help him out with getting his hands on the 88 million dollars which somehow managed to get left behind in the old country, after they let him out of prison and he had to leave Nigeria rather rapidly I guess, less his suitcase. Anyway, if anyone is interested in helping out MA, I'll send you a copy of his email, the original of which is on it's way to appropriate internet authorities, who I am sure will... MORE

Welcome, Sam... Suggest you follow DLancer's advice and be prepared to do both rear brakes as well (unless the other side is basically new) as that oil usually renders that particular side useless in this respect.... Afraid I do not have the parts you seek, though I do already have a copy of Blaggot's fine book, thank you! As far as additives go, don't exactly know what motivates you in this, Sam. Usually, a quality brand is all that is required along with oil/filter changes every 3K or so. It is the additive package which is usually the difference... MORE

Hello, i'm new to the group and I am looking for just a few bits,..mostly a period radio, a stock muffler, and (I realize its a stretch and yes, I know I can get one on e-bay or through the standard mail order companies, but it never hurts to ask) a black carpet kit for my 1962 midget. I also have a spare copy of John Blaggots book "Mighty Midgets and special sprites"...its very nice book and its in perfect condition. aaand while I have your attention, I have oil running out my back left hand side rear wheel... I trust all the purists out there have their nitro glycerin pill handy. A group member observed upon seeing my bugeye bonnet photo that I have a lot of new metal to replace with new and weld in place of the rusted metal on the edges of the bonnet . . . I am thrilled that my MIG welding skills have progressed to a point that I tack welded the side panels back on after having removed them to work the fenders back to a fair semblance of their original state . . . weld sheet metal . .... It will include easy route following instructions, basic TSD... MORE

Without giving a preference of suppliers I would like to ask what is going on with the turn signals? Also . . . the horn is a high current device, any resistance in the wiring will often render it inoperable. Before you give up on it be sure and check/clean all the wiring connections between the horn button and the horn. I have had two midgets whose horns did not work and that was all that was needed to get the horns working. One was dirt on the wiper arm at the steering column and the other was a... MORE

Good Question, but before any one of the many experts can respond you both must agree on what is your objective. Get running and enjoy. Rebuild, show and drive. Other. Why was the engine pulled? Did the car run or was their a problem? While the engine is out, and I assume the Trans.; Take and inventory to see what is there and what's not. Inspect the Trans. gears and see if all turns O.K. Inspect the braking system. Remove the interior stuff including the seats to inspect cockpit. From there it depends on what you two decide you... MORE

Welcome Sue, To add to Bob's suggestions. Often oxidation on electrical connections is a major problem with cars that are old and particularly if they have sat for long periods of time. There are many spade wire connectors on the backs of switches, gauges, lamps and the wiring harness has many bullet in line connectors, in black insulation tubes. At minimum pull off and push spade connectors back on, or bullet inline connectors apart and back together several times to break the surface crud. Spray with some WD40 before and after you do this. If they look very oxidized... MORE

Hi Drew, I don't know if this is a help or an answer to your question, but I think I would approach it this way. You want your tie rod ends to be as straight (horizontal) as possible at rest. This is for something callled "bump steer". The more angle you have to the tie rods the more toe-in/toe-out you will have as the cars rises or drops. You'll know your upper limit (chassis rising- wheel drop) by your bump stops. Racer's (at least Chuck's blue #50) had adjustable bolts used as bunp stops to limit travel. Lower limit...... MORE

Nigel, is the source of your info Terry Horlers 'Original Sprite and Midget' (Must get that book) because according to production records the first Mk3 Midget was produce in October '66, the relevant numbers being G-AN4/52390 (MG) and H-AN9/64756 (A/H) Like all this information, I may have it wrong, but I believe it to be correct. As a point of interest, my own Mk2 was G-AN5231*, and so was produced just before change over. Purchased at the beginning of October '66. Still have the original receipt, cheque etc etc. It was sold to me by a man by the... MORE

Hello all, I'm looking for information on how the emissions controls are configured on a 77. Specifically how the Air pump & EGR valve are setup. Right now on mine the air pump feeds though a check valve directly to a connector on the tail end of the exhaust manifold. Did that year have a diverter or gulp valve? The EGR valve is missing. Did it have one? How was it hooked up? There is an elbow connector on the air intake manifold that isn't hooked up to anything. I've been looking at pictures of engines on the web,... MORE

I am in the UK. I got really lucky with the Sprite. It's a '64, one owner from new. The guy bought it in his late teens or early 20's and kept it all his life and couldn't drive it any more. It has only 60K on the clock and is all original, (now I have found a period gear knob). :) Max "MG_Max" 24462... MORE

In the process of checking out the clutch slave cylinder linkage I reached up to move aside the ground strap a bit to have a better view. The strap is from the lower clutch slave cylinder bolt to the chassis frame, the normal original configuration. It appeared to be a full strap, although covered with oil and dirt as they often are. A gentle push and it moved aside in two pieces, only a few strands were left under the dirt and oil and they parted under the least amount of pressure . . . Nothing can be taken... MORE

Hi Don, This could be the clutch, but I don't think so. If it were, you have some trouble, even if only occasionally, with second or one of the synchro gears as well. What you describe is probably caused by you first motion shaft continuing to spin even when the clutch is disengaged. With no synchro, there is nothing to slow the spinning non-synchro gear. My interpretation is that the first motion shaft is kept spinning by the pilot bushing or bearing. Could be a burred up bearing/bush (some 1275's has a phosphor bronze bushing, some had a needle... Max Well as everyone's corrected my deliberate mistake *s* (gotta give these guys something to do) I can now tell you a little more about your MkIII Sprite. The main changes from the previous versions were, a new windscreen assembly, quarterlights, and as everyone's pointed out, wind up windows, exterior door handles and locks. It lost door pockets but gained a parcel shelf. A new dashboard and instrumentation was introduced, and a new hood clipping onto the windscreen frame top. The other major change was the change to the rear suspension from quarter to semi-elliptic rear springs. Produced from... MORE
