Duncan... First choice: pick up the later timing case cover and utilize the intended stock simple PCV system. It works very well. You see, the Series A motor has a scroll (oil thrower) affair back by the main bearing which depends upon tight metal (block) clearances for "oil tightness". The motor does not have a "regular" rear main oil seal, Duncan. Without the stock PCV system, these motors have a real tendency to leak oil out of this area, most especially as they build miles on the crankshaft. Hi Nigel, I've got to say that I agree with David. When I first read it I thought like you, but on reading it again I have to agree with the fact that in it's basic form it aint no rocket! It's also true to say that it has only become "cool" in more recent years and the characteristic "Frog eyes" were solely down to economics and US laws on headlight height rather than any intentional styling foresight. Hi guys I recently bought the January 2004 issue of the British Classic Car Magazin =3D=0D e 'Practical Classics' which is usually very good. I've been reading this magazine for about 20 years. However, I must say that I'm not at all happy with the article on pages 152 =3D=0D -153 of said magazine titled 'Our Top Ten Misunderstood Classic Cars', where the =3D=0D Austin Healey Frogeye Sprite accompanies such memorable classics as the Triumph Acclaim, Ford Pop 103E, Reliant Regal, Fiat 124 and Daf 44/45 among =3D=0D st others. Stewart... I love my Frogeye but I have to agree with you. As a daily driver, my Vizardized '74 was a more practical car for sure. I understood that the early cars had hand stamped numbers (cut, I believe the expression is) from the top . But the later cars had them stamped from the back resulting in raised figures that in theory could not overstamped. An anti theft device to stop people changing the identity of the car. I understand that there's a place in Brum (where else?) that supplies the c orrect VIN plates and know a place that can stamp the raised letters. I hav e the details somewhere. Jim I'm 99.9% sure the oil seal lipped side does indeed face the bearing, in other words it goes in flat side first. Yeah, front suspension can be a nightmare to take apart. Dan Not from what I've just seen in Terry Horler's Original Sprite and Midget, they most definitely look stamped from the top - same as mine, same model version too. There is a distinctive 'cut' into the plate from above you can't achieve that effect from stamping from the bottom, and the letters aren't raised they're indented. Nigel "amukdigiphoto" 27164... MORE

Dan Can't help with the book I'm afraid, but I do know that Moss in the UK do t =3D=0D he VIN plates, also that they sometimes come on on ebay.co.uk within a 'decal =3D=0D set'. You could also trawl ebay.co.uk or .com for the book you're looking f =3D=0D or, I've seen all sorts of books relevant to Midgets and Sprites on there. Well, now that I've so so much great help in locating a source for VIN plate stamping, I find my source for the blank plate (I hadn't ordered it yet) has dried up. Can anyone tell me where to get one? Secondly, thanks to all who helped me ID my missing book, but I now find it's out of print, and I can't locate one of those either. The book is the "Sprite MG Midget Owners Handbook of Maintenance and Repair" It's green covered and is abut 5" x 8". It's published by Clymer Publishing. Again, where can I... MORE

Eeg Thank you and I'm pleased to hear your new sill is going to stay on! And yes I've already sprayed the underneath in topcoat, it's all done, as well as the engine bay and inside. I'm just working on the outer panels now. Repair panels are notorious for poor fit, some suppliers of repair panels are better than others (yes Ashley Hinton, you're one of the good ones:) and pretty much all of them require some form of fettling to make them fit correctly. Hi All, I have posted a directory (00 - Spotlights) to show you my new spots on my '64 Sprite. They are Lucas FT6's with replacement Sealed Beams. Wired in parallel, I put a Lucas toggle switch to the right of the steering wheel on the dash. In the end I made the brackets out of aluminium to fashion the metal and then took it to a metal worker who made a set for =A310 out of 3mm Stainless Steel. Guys... Isn't there an anti-drainback valve in the 948's mechanical fuel pump? It's been 40 years for me so I've forgotten! :) But I think there may be one, Chris. And with no disrespect intended Chris, why would anyone run an engine with possible fuel leaks in the engine compartment? You don't EVER want to do this, man. Disaster doesn't always strike the "other guy"! :) I mean if you look just below the carbs, you'll find the exhaust system!! Speaking of which.... Years ago (1980), when I first got my MKII, there was a book with it, given to me by the previous owner. The book has since vanished, and I would like to replace it but I can't remember much about it, including the name. It was a manual of some type with an interesting twist. At the end of the book there was a story about a couple guys driving their Sprite accross southern US (I think) I remember them discussing physics such as Boyles gas law and how it would pertain to their tire pressure when the drove... Is there some way to look up the performance potential of the cam I have in my Sprite? I have the numbers for when the valves open and close and also the lift measurements. I know how that feels, Nigel. When I started working on my Sprite last year the tires were flat and had glued themselves to the floor. It had been stored against the wall for 15 years. I had to use a long pole to pry/slide it away from the wall far enough to get an air hose to one of the tires so it would sort of roll. Now I have wheel dollies under all four wheels and it is easy to even move it sideways. It was a great feeling to move it out into natural light after... MORE
Cheers Cap'n! Well thats an estimate! I've been here (where I live now) for about 15 years and it was towed from my parents house and pushed into the garage when I moved, and then put on axle stands. I've pushed it out on the trolley jack and turned it round, but it's never moved on all four wheels since it's been in the garage, so yeah first time in 15 years since its moved on all four wheels! I have to say it did look good, with that classic 'tail up stance' that Spridgets have, I've missed seeing... MORE
