every day is a Sprite day. As we near the end of summer daytime temperatures are around 83F Even in the depths of winter daytime temps are around 64F. Our main problem is frying at traffic lights especially in the middle of summer, 104+degrees. Heaven for me is cruising around the Gold Coast on a summer evening. Well, here in St. Louis, Missouri (almost dead centre of the USA), we often get multiple seasons in 1 week. For example, it was sunny, beautiful & in the mid-60s on Saturday, overcast & 35F Sunday, in the 40s the next 2 days, and we expect snow on Wednesday, but then back into the 50s for the weekend. These fittings are designed to seal against the pipe flare, not on the thread. Teflon tape will not likely fix the problem. Assuming you don't have a cross-threaded fitting, and that it is tight, then either the flare on the end of the pipe is damaged/malformed, or the nipple shape at the bottom of the hole is. I have fixed this problem with a small nylon washer. A hardward store or plumbing supply will have small nylon washers which will just drop into the hole. An experienced professional classic car restorer here in the UK advises owners to slightly under fill the diff with oil. He says these always leak and since there is nothing to oil lubricate in the axle tubes (the wheel bearings are lubricated with grease when fitted) there is no need to have oil present and a quarter of an inch les oil in the diff will not cause any harm. I have not tried it and take no responsibility if he is wrong but I have had problems with these seals even when new gaskets and O rings are... MORE
I got my resleeved master and clutch slave cylinders for my bugeye back from Whitepost and installed them. When I started to bleed the brakes more fluid came out around the brake line attachment point than came out of the bleeder at the rear brake. I didn't replace all the brake lines and would really prefer not to do that. When I installed the lines I just screwed them into the master cylinder (after cleaning them first with clean brake fluid and drying them). Is there something else that I should have done? Greetings: I have a 1960 Bugeye Sprite which I recently purchased and am going through to make sure everything's up to snuff. Of note is that it has wire knockoff wheels. I took off the rear tires and brake drum to find that oil had leaked into the drums, contaminating the shoes and necessitating their replacement. While the hub has been off, I went ahead and replaced the bearing and I'm just about to the point of buttoning everything back up. I got a new o-ring and paper gasket for the hub as well. I pulled off the old slave cylinder and had it resleeved. When I took it off, it was very difficult to remove the upper bolt due to the small amount of room (no room for socket - only turn about one flat at a time) and the fact that the bolt was so long that there was less than 1/8 inch of room between the bolt and the frame when it was all the way unscrewed. I went out and bought a ratcheted box wrench, but I was wondering if anyone had any other tips. Maybe I could use... MORE

Greetings: I recently purchased a 1960 Bugeye Sprite, and I'm having quite a time figuring out what prior owners did to it. Case in point: On the front timing cover is a canister looking apparatus with one single rubber hose coming out of it. On my car, the hose goes nowhere. What is this thing? stewart you are correct to use 35 amp fuse.i am nearly sure the fuse in question protects indicators,fuel gauge and heater blower and operates when ignition switch is on.i had a similar problem on my 1977 1500 midget and found the problem was caused by worn wires on the indicator stalk shorting. to rectify,unscrew four screws that secure the cowls to the steering column remove lower cowl then move upper cowl in anti-clockwise direction round steering column,depress horn slip-ring contact and ease the cowl off the column.remove clip holding the switch wiring harness to the steering column and disconect... See what works when the fuse is new and then what doesn't work after the fuse blows. Check those items. 35 amps is a lot. Some things draw a lot, like the head lights, the horn and others draw little like running lights, radio, wiper motor, etc. you could get a used amp meter at a surplus store (might cost 5 to 10 dollars) that reads about 10 amps full scale and run each item though it and measure how much it draws. Add them up and see how close to 35 you are. Safety margin should be 20... MORE
I just got a sabelt three point racing harness at a british swap meet with the intention of fitting it to the stock seat belt mounting points on my 1971 mg midget. I got home and noticed a small problem. The belt that extends behind the seat to the rear point is too long. IMHO, this is not a good idea. There are some things that a "Shade Tree Mechanic" can do, after all, I are one, but there are some parts to the LBC that might be better left to a "British Car Mechanic." As far as your list, Wouldn't a simple "I'll pay you $50-$100, you look it over, turn it over, try to start it, check brakes, etc, and 1. tell me what you think, and 2. give me an estimate as to what you think it needs, what the parts and labor to do will be, and if agreed... I have a bugeye with a 1098 enine. When I got the car I purchased the Haynes manual for sprites and midgets. It seems to give memostof the information I need. I was wondering if there was enough in the way of additional information or tips to make it worth buying the "Tuning the A Series Engine" book or one of the SU carbuerator books. Whatever! I didn't leave the bugey group, had too many people write to me and tell me to just put up with you guys. Some people have an interest in the cars and what others are doing to them, other are just jealous. About luxury cars, doing a nice job on my seats, adding air bags to the suspension and triangulating the rear end not only makes for a great ride and great looks, but makes it handle unbelievably well. Read up on air bags, they allow the suspension to sway-bar correct through the turns better than springs. F=KX.... MORE
